Activity Description of Activities and Setting

Time

1. Focus and Review March is womens history month, so today were going 3-5
to be talking about some different women and their minutes
accomplishments. Can anyone tell me why womens
history is important?

2. Statement of Today we will talk about different women in history and 1 minute
Objective their accomplishments. Later you will write about a
for Student woman who has impacted your life.

3. Teacher Input Were going to start today by looking at this poem 15 mins
about women.

Long before your grandma was young

Womens freedom was a song not yet sung

Men mostly said that women didnt get it

If you gave them a job, theyd just forget it

They said a womans job was cleaning house

And staying quiet as a mouse

But many women said we want more

We like our homes, but we want more than chores

We want the right to earn real pay

We work just as hard as men each day

And more than anything, please note

We want to have the right to vote

And after the marches and protests were done

All of that is just what they won.

Now that weve read this poem, lets go back and really
analyze what it means. Long before your grandma was
young, lets look at this first line, before your grandma
was young, what does that mean? Right, it mean it
happened a long time ago, womens freedom was a
song not yet sung, I see a metaphor here. The author is
comparing womens freedom to a song not yet sung.
What do you think this means? Womens freedom didnt
exist yet.

Men mostly said that women didnt get it, if you gave
them a job theyd, theyd just forget it. Does this sound
like the men were on the womens side? Did they have
faith in the women?

They said a womans job was cleaning house, and

staying quiet as a mouse. Does this sound like the men
wanted their wives to go out and get jobs? Not really,
back then the men wanted their wives to tend to the
house by cooking, cleaning and raising the kids. I see a
simile here. I know its a simile because it uses the work
as. Its comparing the wives to mice, saying they should
be quiet. They didnt want them to have their own
thoughts, opinions or voices.

But many women said we want more, We like our

homes, but we want more than chores, We want the
right to earn real pay, We work just as hard as men each
day, What did the women want? Thats right, they
wanted jobs, they wanted to be paid equally for those
jobs. How would you feel if you and a partner worked on
a project, you both put in an equal amount of work and
turned in the same thing but your partner got an A and
you got a D? For doing the exact same thing! That would
probably make you pretty mad right? It made the women
mad, they wanted to work, and they wanted their work to
be recognized.

And more than anything, please note, We want to have

the right to vote. Why do you think women wanted to
vote? Because they wanted their voices to be heard.
Imagine this, its lunch, but the cafeteria is only serving
one meal today and its up to the students to decide.
*calls on student* what do you want the meal to be?
Youre the only one who gets to vote. Tacos? Alright, I
hope you all like tacos because thats what youre eating
today. You all dont get to vote. Thats not fair right?
Thats how women felt. They wanted to vote. They
wanted their voices to be heard and their opinions to
matter.

And after the marches and protests were done

All of that is just what they won. Women have truly come
a long way, but they had to fight for what they wanted.
They held marches and protests, they werent silent.
Now, everything isnt perfectly equal between men and
women, not even today, but women have still come so
far. We can vote, we dont have to stay home to clean
and raise kids, we can be whatever we want to be.
There are so many women who fought for us to be able
to do these things and women who are proof that we can
do anything, and now were going to talk about a few of
them.

4. Guided Practice Our next activity is a game which I think you are all 15 mins
going to enjoy. But, I need you all to still be on your best
behavior for me and pay attention. When I call your
numbers, I would like you to grab your chromebook and
go to kahoot.it. Please type in the code on the board and
write your name so I know who everyone is. Okay, so
the object of the game is to choose the right answer to
the question. This game is just for fun so dont get upset
if you dont know the answer.

Question 1: Which woman refused to give up her seat on

the bus? Answer: Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks said no that day on the bus when she was
asked to move because of her skin color. She was a key
member of the civil rights movement.

Question 2: Who wanted to be the first woman to fly solo

across the Atlantic but disappeared? Answer: Amelia
Earhart. Amelia Earhart wanted to fly across the Atlantic
ocean, but she got lost along the way and to this day, we
dont know what happened to her. But, she showed
extreme courage and made attempts to make her
dreams come true.

Who ran against Donald Trump during the 2016

election?
Answer: Hillary Clinton. Even though she did not win the
election, she is still a symbol that women have come
such a long way and that they can be anything. She has
worked in politics for many years as a senator and as
the secretary of state.

What was Marie Curies job? Answer: A scientist. She

worked with her husband to discover two elements:
radium and polonium and this is what led to the
development of X-Ray machines. She was the first
woman to win a nobel prize. There werent many women
interested in science during these days but that didnt
stop Marie from doing something she was passionate
about. The number of women in STEM jobs now
continues to grow.

Which right is Malala known for fighting for? The right to

education. Malala is from a country that didnt want
women and girls going to school. However, she speaks
about how important it is despite how dangerous it is for
her to do so in her country. She shows true bravery.

None of these women are the same. They have all

impacted history in different ways but theyre all
important.

5. Independent Now I would like you to think about a woman who has 15-20
Practice made an impact. It can be one of the woman who weve minutes
talked about today, or any other woman you can think of.
It can even be someone who has impacted your life, like
your mom, your grandma, or maybe even a teacher. Its
completely up to you. Then I would like you to write a
poem about that woman and the impact she has had.
Give some examples of the things she did/things she
does and talk about how that has impacted you,
impacted society or impacted history. Heres my
example:

My mother is like a tree

Strong and tough
But always bending for me

She taught me about hard work,

Nothing comes free
To always try your best
To get where you want to be

But, she also taught me about feelings

And being kind
That everyone is fighting their own battle
And to keep that in mind
Because of my mom, Ill be chasing
My dreams until the end
I will always try my best to be
A good student, teacher and friend.

6. Assessment Formative: Observe how students participate in discussion in the

Methods of lesson and during the Kahoot game.
all Summative:The independent practice will be graded out of 5. 1 point
objectives/skills: for clearly identifying who the poem is about, 2 points for giving
examples of how this person has impacted them, 1 point for correct
spelling and 1 point for writing in the form of a poem.

7. Closure You all wrote some great poems today. You should give 2 mins
these poems to whoever you wrote about, and if you
didnt write about someone personal then you should still
share these with your family. Its nice to tell people when
theyve made an impact on your life!
