Task 3:

Week 3. Analyzing Classroom Discourse.

Observe in a classroom, keeping a record that lets you answer the following
questions. Record/write down a list of what is said for 10 minutes during the
CORE/GROUP/ACTIVITY part of the class:

What proportion of time does the teacher talk?

o Time the class for 10 min, how many of those minutes is the teacher
talking?
She talk first about 15 min's to describe the lesson and the activities.

What types of questions does the teacher ask?

o List all the exact words you hear the teacher uses when asking
questions about the math topic (not review or procedural questions)
o Who can tell me the answer?
o What you think the answer is?
o How you know that?
o What you see on the board?

What evidence do you see that children have learned some mathematics?
o What are children saying or doing that shows they understand a new
topic?
o Give them activities to do
o They work hard to do it.
o They fell happy and answer the questions clearly.

How many of the children have an opportunity to talk?

Only the students who know the answers.
o Are children talking only when the teacher calls on them?
o Most of the students they talk or answer the teacher when she is still
writing or describing the lesson.

o Do children talk to partners or in table groups? NO

o Do children raise their hands to ask questions? NO What are they
asking? The thinks that I hopes to changed is when they want to ask
something they just start to talk without raise their hand.
In your opinion, is the classroom discourse about important and new
mathematics?
o Why or why not? No because I remember when I was in government
school the classroom were the same as today and I think we must
change this things because me as a student I didn't learn anything
important that I will need in my life career.
