LESSON PLAN COMPONENTS

Emily Borden
Subject Area/Grade Level: Math for fourth graders.

Topic: How to calculate how much time has gone by.

Rationale: I am teaching this because this is a great skill to have when you are trying to figure
out how much time you have left in a certain activity. It is also helpful when setting a schedule or
putting aside study time.

Objective: I want the students to learn how to calculate how much time has gone by and also
why this is an important skill to have in their everyday life.

Materials Needed: Little clocks, smart board, the students math journals, and a pencil.

Introduction: I will introduce what we are going to talk about. I will tell them that they are going
to learn about how to calculate how many minutes have passed between two different times. For
example how much time has passed between 8:15 and 10:40. I want to then explain to them that
this is an important skill to have in life because lets say you have a doctors appointment at 12:15
and it is now 11:30. How long do you have before your appointment?

Body: The first way I am going to show them how to calculate this is by using a number line and
writing 8:15 on the end of the number line to the left and then write down 9:30 on the end of the
number line to the write. I will then draw a semi-circle and say we are going to add five minutes
to 8:15 and write +5 on the top of that semi-circle and ask the class what 8:15 + 5min is. And
then continue to add five until we get to 9:30. I will also explain to them that they can also add
by 10 or 20 or how ever many they want to, but they have to make sure that it adds up to being
9:30 at the end. I will do a couple of examples of this and have the students do it along with me. I
will then introduce a different way of calculating how much time is in between 8:15 and 9:30.
This method is called zoom. You start with the would start at the top left of a page and the word
end at the bottom right of the page. Where it says start you will write 8:15 and where it says end
you will right 11:30. From the 8:15 you will draw a straight horizontal line to the right and write
9:00 at the end of that line. On top of the line connecting the 8:15 and 9:00 you will write 45 min
because that is the amount of time between 8:15 and 9:00. You then draw a diagonal line down to
the left and write 11:00 at the end of the line. On this line you would write 2 hours because that
is the amount of time between 9:00 and 11:00. From that point you will draw a horizontal line to
where it says end so that the picture makes a Z. Then you would write on this line 30 min
because that is how min are between 11:00 and 11:00. Then you add up the 45min + 30min+2
hours to get 3 hours and 15 min. I will then go over a few of these examples and break them into
small groups to work with me or Ms. Feller.

Assessment: At the end of the lesson I will ask them to put their heads down and rate on a scale
of 1 to 5 how well do they understand what I had just done. I will then pass out their homework
which they can begin to work on in class where I will be available to answer questions. I will
also look at their homework the next day and see if they understood or not and what I would
need to go back and review with them.
