INTRODUCTION

ADITYA BIRLA GROUP OVERVIEW

GENESIS:
Aditya Birla Group traces its origin back to the tiny village of Pilani in the Rajasthan
desert, where, late Shri Seth Shiv Narayan Birla started cotton-trading operations
in 1857. Then one visionary – the late Shri G.D Birla set up India’s first integrated
aluminium manufacturing unit at Renukoot, in 1962, backed by captive power plant
at Renusagar in 1967.

It further evolved under the dynamic leadership of the late Shri Aditya Vikram Birla
– a prominent figure in the Indian industry, under whose stewardship Hindalco
attained its leadership position in aluminium. Today our Group chairman, Dr.
Kumar Manglam Birla has put together the building blocks to make Indian business
a global force.

HINDALCO

An industry leader in aluminium and copper, Hindalco Industries

Limited, the metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group is the
world's largest aluminium rolling company and one of the biggest
producers of primary aluminium in Asia. Its copper smelter is the
world’s largest custom smelter at a single location.

Established in 1958, we commissioned our aluminium facility at

Renukoot in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India in 1962. Later acquisitions
and mergers, with Indal, Birla Copper and the Nifty and Mt. Gordon
copper mines in Australia, strengthened our position in value-added
alumina, aluminium and copper products.

6
The acquisition of Novelis Inc. in 2007 positioned us among the top
five aluminium majors worldwide and the largest vertically integrated
aluminium company in India. Today we are a metals powerhouse with
high-end rolling capabilities and a global footprint in 12 countries. Our
consolidated turnover of USD 13 billion (60,000 crore) places us in the
Fortune 500 league.

Our units are ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001
certified. Several units have gone a step further with an integrated
management system (IMS), combining ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and
OHSAS 18001 into one business excellence model. We have been
accorded the Star Trading House status in India. Hindalco's aluminium
metal is accepted for delivery under the High Grade Aluminium
Contract on the London Metal Exchange (LME). Our copper quality
standards are also internationally recognised and registered on the
LME with Grade A accreditation.

Trust started rural development work with only twobackward villages in
Sonebhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. Gradually, the operational area increased to
345 villages with a population of around 5 lacs. These villages are situated in the
states in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
The objective is, “To bring about sustainable development in the villages, through
different need based initiatives, encouraging community ownership.”

Area profile
The majority beneficiaries are from Below Poverty Line families and depend on
marginal farming anddaily wages. Their unstructured income-pattern, results in
seasonal migration. Due to undulated land and scanty rainfall the food production
is much less than the requirement.Apart from paddy, the major food crops grown in
this area are maize, saawa and some pulses, which require less amount of water.
The literacy rate is very low i.e., around 52 %. Majority of the pregnant women and
children are victims of malnourishment, which results in untimely death among new
infants and pregnant women. In the remote areas, infrastructure facilities such as
Primary Health Centres, health sub-centers and community health centers are very
less due to which people from far-flung areas are deprived of proper health
service. Modus Operandi Model village plan has the following features:It is a
holistic approach to bring all-round development. The major focus is given to the
participation of people during planning and implementation stages.
Self-Sustainability through resource and social mobilizationPromotion of Self-Help
Groups and Village Development Committees.

Welfare meaning
20
A social welfare provision, which is what many people mean when they
speak of welfare, is a program that aims to give a base level of income to
people who may be out of work, disabled, or elderly. The idea is that without
the government stepping in to help these groups, they would otherwise not
survive, and so the government has a moral obligation to support them.
Proponents also point out that keeping people at a certain minimum level
allows them to work, and therefore ultimately helps the society at large
financially.

Labor welfare
Labour welfare has been defined in various ways, though no single
definition has found universal acceptance. The Oxford dictionary defines
labour welfare as "Efforts to make life worth living for workmen." Chambers
dictionary defines welfare as "A state of faring or doing well. Freedom from
calamity, enjoyment of health and prosperity".

OBJECTIVES OF LABOUR WELFARE ACTIVITIES

The object of welfare activities is to promote economic development by
increasing production and productivity. The underlying principle is to make
the workers given their loyal services ungrudgingly in genuine spirit of co-
operation, in return for obligations, voluntary and compulsory, accepted by
the employee towards the general well-being of the employees.

Improving the efficiency of the labour is another objective of labour welfare

activities. Efficiency gives double reward, one in the form of increased
production and the other in the shape of higher wages due to achievement
of higher productivity. Welfare activities add to their efficiency and efficiency
in turn help the worker to earn more wages. Therefore, welfare activities in
an organization are twice blessed. It helps the employer and the employee
both.

Another objective of welfare activities is to secure the labour proper human

conditions of work and living. Working conditions of organization may be led
by an artificial environment which features are dust, fumes, noise, unhealthy
temperature, etc. It is generally found that these conditions impose strain on
the body.

The welfare activities are done to minimize the hazardous effect on the life
of the workers and their family members. It is the duty of the employer to
see these human needs. If welfare activities are viewed in this light, it can
be seen that they are guided by purposes of humanitarian and social
justice.

The next objective of welfare activities is to add in a real way to the low
earning of the labour. The facilities are provided to supplement the income
of the workers by services such as housing, medical assistance, school, co-
operative, canteens, stores, play grounds etc.
21
Thus, the objective of activities are to promote greater efficiency of the
workers, assure proper human conditions to the workers and their family
members, supplement their wages in monetary teams, give more real
wages and foster better industrial relations

PERCEPTIVE OF LABOUR WELFARE ACTIVITIES

The focus on the labour welfare Activities has led to a growing interest by
stakeholders who have started to identify the problem of the labour welfare and
formulate their position. The main stake holders are the enterprises investors,
employees, trade urions and governments. They are, therefore, gradually
becoming aware of the potential of labour welfare activities, albeit from different
prospective.

The basic questions in this prospective are the followings:

1. Should labour welfare activities be mandatory for enterprises ?

2. If mandatory should law and/or social organization should regulate the
labour welfare activities?
3. If voluntary, how to secure the interests of the employees at enterprise
level?
