As Democrats gear up for the congressional
mid-term elections in 2018, one race that will be
critical for the LGBT community and potentially a
challenge to win isthe re-election bid of U.S. Sen.
Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), the only out lesbian in
Congress.
After becoming the rst openly gay person
elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012, Baldwin will face
re-election in a state Trump won in a surpriselast
year. Her race will almost certainly be a priority for
the LGBT community seeking to ensure visibility

Diverse co-chairs named for LGBT march on Washington
Organizers say details
of June 11 event to be
released soon

Organizers of a planned LGBT march on
Washington scheduled for June 11, which
has been named the Equality March for
Unity and Pride, released on Wednesday
the names of 12 of 13 co-chairs of the
event but provided few additional details
such as how it will be nanced or the
route of the march.
The Equality March for Unity and Pride
is less than two months away and we are
thrilled to host this historic march in our
nations capital, a statement released by
organizers says.
Permits are being worked on,
sponsors are being engaged, the website
is forthcoming, and just this week we
selected 12 of 13 National Co-Chairs! the
statement says. This national group of
diverse leaders in the LGBTQIA+ liberation
movements will help shape the mission
and vision of the march by elevating voices
of those most underserved, it says.
The statement adds that the diversity
represented by the co-chairs would
ensure that in these trying times
our communities can come together,
march in solidarity, and demand equity,
representation, protection of our most
vulnerable, and safeguarding the many
triumphs our communities have gained in
the previous years while working towards
championing many more.
Among those named as co-chairs
are Anika Simpson, Ph.D, founding
coordinator of the Womens and Gender
Studies Program at Morgan State
University, one of the nations historic
black colleges; Ashley Smith, an ocial
with the Capital Pride Alliance and a
Human Rights Campaign Foundation
board member; Catalina Velasquez, a
widely recognized LGBT immigrant rights
advocate and Senior Director of Strategic
Partnerships and Communications for
D.C.s Casa Ruby community services
center; and Jose L. Plaza, president of the
D.C.-based Latino GLBT History Project.
Also named as one of the co-chairs is
David Bruinooge, the New York City LGBT
rights advocate who initiated the June
11 march through a Facebook posting
in January that quickly drew thousands
of messages of support for the idea of
an LGBT march on the nations capital
similar to the womens march held the day
following President Trumps Inauguration.
The announcement on Wednesday of
the names of the co-chairs and assurances
that more details of the march would
be disclosed soon came at a time when

messages have surfaced on social media
expressing concern that so few details of
the event had been disclosed less than two
months before the march was to take place.
Some Facebook postings have asked
whether the march would actually
happen and whether people who have
made airline reservations to come to
Washington should cancel them. Others
expressed concern that as of this week no
money had been raised to help pay for an
event of this scale.
Theres still plenty of time, said D.C.
gay activist Peter Rosenstein, who has
been serving as a volunteer on a march
planning committee prior to the selection
of the co-chairs. Its all being worked out.
The permits are in the works and the route
will be decided on in a few weeks, he said.
An application for a permit for the march
submitted on March 10 to the National
Park Service of the National Capital Region
by Bruinooge, which the Park Service
released to the Washington Blade, calls for
two possible routes for the march.
One calls for participants to assemble
on the National Mall between 3rd and 7th
Streets, N.W. and for participants to disperse
at that same location but doesnt say whether
or where the march would travel.
The second proposed route states,
Dupont Circle/assembly at 17th Street
(March across Penn. Ave. in front of White
House. Disperse on 15th St., N.W.).
Bruinooge told the Blade the march
route is still under discussion among
organizers and that he would be
consulting with National Park Service
ocials and D.C. police to determine
which areas of the National Mall and
other locations will be available and best
suited for the planned march.
The march is set to take place on the
same day as D.C.s annual Capital Pride
Festival, which takes place on Pennsylvania
Avenue, N.W. between 3rd Street, near the
U.S. Capitol, and 7th St. The June 11 march
would also take place one day after D.C.s
annual Capital Pride Parade, which usually
travels from the Dupont Circle area past
the 17th Street, N.W. commercial area to
14th and R St., N.W.
Ryan Bos, executive director of the
Capital Pride Alliance, which organizes
the Capital Pride events, said the group is
cooperating with organizers of the Equality
March for Unity and Pride but would not
serve as the scal agent for the march.
Bos said no one associated with the
march has approached Capital Pride
Alliance about using the large stage
near the Capitol that Capital Pride sets
up each year to be used for political
speeches associated with the march.
March organizers, meanwhile, have not
disclosed whether they plan to set up
their own stage and sound system for
speeches associated with the march.
We have been discussing how to best
represent and acknowledge these unique
times and the desire for members of
our community to voice their feelings,
Bos told the Blade in an email message.
We want to assist in getting individuals
connected to organizations and activities
that would allow them to take action, he
said. In addition, we are discussing how
best to represent this narrative on the
Concert Stage as well.
In recent years, Capital Pride has
shunned political speeches at the annual
festival and has used two separate
stages largely for musical entertainment,
including performances by nationally
known singers.
In the statement released on
Wednesday, march organizers point
out that the Washington march will be
accompanied by numerous solidarity
marches and events throughout the
country and internationally.
Together we will continue to propel
beyond a march but a movement for
years to come, resisting and ghting
for our communities rights, dignity and
safety, the statement says. So please
join us in D.C. or at solidarity events
around the world. We welcome all!

Texas to consider anti-LGBT legislation based on HB2 deal
Measure would bar cities
from enacting protections

In a sign the new law in North
Carolina that replaced House Bill 2 may
be exported to other states, the Texas
legislature was expected this week to
consider anti-LGBT legislation that bears
a striking resemblance to the North
Carolina deal.
The bill, House Bill 2899, was
introduced last Friday by Rep. Ron
Simmons (R-Carrollton) as a compromise
proposal for lawmakers seeking to
enact anti-LGBT legislation in Texas as
the biennial legislative session in Texas
winds down. The legislation was set for
a hearing Wednesday in the House State
Aairs Committee, after Blade deadline.
The measure would prohibit
municipalities from enacting ordinances
that would protect a class of persons
from discrimination or reduce or expand
the classes of persons protected from
discrimination under state law. In eect,
the proposal would bar cities from
enacting ordinances barring anti-LGBT
discrimination because Texas state law
aords no protection based on sexual
orientation or transgender status.
The proposal has explicit language
stating city ordinances would become null
and void if they were enacted prior to the
passage of the law. That would eliminate
non-discrimination ordinances already
in place in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort
Worth, Plano and San Antonio, according
to the Human Rights Campaigns 2016
Municipal Index.
HB 2899 would take eect immediately
if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all
the members elected to each house as
provided under the Texas Constitution.
But if the legislature approves it by a
simple majority, it would take eect on
Sept. 1, 2017.
The law is proposed as an alternative
to anti-LGBT legislation already approved
in the Senate, Senate Bill 6, which seems
to have stalled out after House Speaker
Joe Strauss said he opposed the bill and
had no intention of bringing it up. That
proposal would bar cities from enacting
measures to bar discrimination against
transgender people in restrooms and
prohibit transgender people from using
the restroom consistent with their gender
identity in public spaces, such as schools
and government buildings.
Matt McTighe, executive director
for Freedom for All Americans, said
in a statement lawmakers reject the
measure because it would have the same
discriminatory impact as SB6.
No one should be fooled by HB2899
this is dangerous legislation that is just as
discriminatory and economically perilous
as SB6, McTighe said. Legal protections
from discrimination are put in place for a
reason, and rolling those protections back
should never be on the table. Like SB6,
this legislation is a solution in search of a
problem that just doesnt exist. There are
no winners under HB2899 it will create
dangerous situations for transgender
people, and like SB6 it will tarnish Texas
reputation and economy.
Also condemning the Texas proposal
on the basis of it being worse than SB6
was Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of the LGBT
media organization GLAAD.
The newly proposed HB 2899 is even
worse than SB6 because it invalidates

all existing local non-discrimination
ordinances that protect LGBTQ Texans
and gives anti-LGBTQ state lawmakers
full control over future LGBTQ local non-
discrimination laws, Ellis said. HB 2899
is another harmful solution in search of
a problem and will accomplish one thing:

The measure bears a striking
resemblance to HB142, the replacement
law that Gov. Roy Cooper signed as part
of a deal with Republican legislative
leaders to alleviate economic boycott
in his state as a result of HB2. The
replacement law, which critics say still
enables discrimination, convinced major
sports leagues like the NCAA to return to
the state, although numerous states and
municipalities have continued their bans
on sponsored travel to North Carolina in
protest over the law.
HB2899 is similar to the HB2 deal
because both of them bars cities from
enacting pro-LGBT non-discrimination
ordinances, although that language in the
North Carolina law will sunset in 2020.

Baldwin prepares for re-election ght in 2018

Baldwin hasnt just aided the LGBT
community through her visibility as the
only out lesbian in Congress. In the ve
years shes been in oce, Baldwin has
taken leadership roles sometimes
quietly, sometime more prominently
to raise attention to LGBT issues.
An original co-sponsor of the Equality
Act, Baldwin has been closely associated
with the goal of enshrining into law a
comprehensive bill barring discrimination
against LGBT people in all areas of federal
civil rights law. Baldwin also took a lead
role during 2013 in the more modest
goal of passing the Employment Non-
Discrimination Act, which the U.S. Senate
approved on a bipartisan basis.
Baldwin has also urged the Food &
Drug Administration to end its policy
barring gay men from donating blood,
encouraged the Education Department to
issue (now rescinded by Trump) guidance
assuring transgender kids have access
to school bathrooms consistent with the
gender identity and objected to the Trump
administrations appointment of anti-trans
activist Roger Severino to defend access to
transgender health at the Department of
Health & Human Services.
The timing of her race next year on
one hand is good news for Baldwin.
History shows (if you overlook 1998 and
2002) the party opposing the sitting U.S.
president gains seats during the mid-term
election. If that holds up in 2018 and
many analysts, citing Trumps ongoing
unpopularity, believe it will Baldwin
will have the upper hand in her bid to
preserve her seat.
Ironically, the tradition that the
presidents party loses seats in the mid-
term elections would have spelled trouble
for Baldwin if Hillary Clinton had succeeded
in 2016, an outcome Baldwin strongly
desired as an early Clinton supporter.
JR Ross, editor of the Madison-based
WisPolitics, said Trumps victory bolsters
Baldwins re-election chances in a state
where Republicans tend to do well in o-
year elections.
Her prospects are much better now
that we have President Trump rather than
President Clinton, Ross said. If Clinton
had won, shed have two things going
against her. One, Wisconsin tends to be
more Republican in terms of turnout in
o-year election, and two, the party in
the White House ends up having a hard
time in mid-term elections. Because its
President Trump, that alone improves
her chances.
Pointing to a March 22 poll from
Marquette Law School that found 41 percent
of Wisconsin residents approve of Trump
compared to 47 percent who disapprove,
Ross said Trumps low approval rating in the

President Trumps approval rating was
upside down in Wisconsin and upside
down with independents, Ross said. If
that continues, and hes unpopular in

Ross said Republicans have had a
better ground game in Wisconsin than
Democrats in the last couple elections
and theres a question about the impact
of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walkers presence
on the ballot.
Baldwin has done well in fundraising.
The senator posted $2.2 million for
fundraising in the rst quarter of 2017
and has $2.4 million in cash on hand, a
Democratic activist familiar with those
numbers said.
Baldwin will be running for re-election
in a state Trump won narrowly by 22,750
votes, which is largely attributed to the
states support for populism, a political
view Republicans have come to dominate.
In addition to Trumps win there, Sen. Ron
Johnson (R-Wis.), whom many observers
thought was a dead-man walking against
challenger Russ Feingold, won re-election
last year by nearly 4 points.
Not helping Baldwin is a poll unveiled
last week by Morning Consult, which
found she was paired with Sen. Claire
McCaskill (D-Mo.) as the least popular
Democratic senators up for re-election in
2018. According to the rankings, Baldwin
has an approval rating of 44 percent in
the state compared to 38 percent of state
residents who disapprove of her.
Nathan Gonzales, editor of the D.C.-
based Inside Elections, said Baldwin faces
both advantages and challenges in her re-
election bid, but ultimately concluded the
conditions are favorable to her.
I think 2016 showed Republicans can
be successful in Wisconsin in midterm
and presidential years, and thats bad
news for the senator, Gonzales said. But
history tells us the presidents party often
struggles in midterm elections, and that
could be the saving grace for Baldwin.
If Hillary Clinton was sitting in the Oval
Oce, I think the senator would have a
tougher time. I still expect Baldwin to
have a competitive race, but the rst step
is for Republicans to gure out who is
running and choosing their nominee.
The lack of an obvious Republican
challenger, as Gonzales noted, is another
boon to Baldwin in 2018. The candidate
the GOP had hoped to eld, Rep. Sean
Duy (R-Wis.), a four-term member of
Congress and former cast member of
MTVs Real World, declared in February
he wont challenge Baldwin in 2018.
Baldwin will be beat because her
radically liberal Madison record and ideas
are out of sync with Wisconsin, Duy said
in a statement. I look forward to helping
our Republican nominee defeat her. Ill
continue to work my heart out for the
families of the 7th District, and Im excited
about the great things we will accomplish
with our united Republican government.
None of the other possible contenders
have the same star power. According to the
Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, they include
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald,
Madison businessman Eric Hovde, state
Rep. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookeld), state
Sen. Leah Vukmir (R-Brookeld) and
Marine veteran and Milwaukee-area
businessman Kevin Nicholson.
Much as was the case in 2012 when
Baldwin defeated the favored former Gov.
Tommy Thompson to win the U.S. Senate
seat, the inghting among Republicans
and the cash these candidates will spend
to obtain the Republican nomination
could make for a battered challenger that
Baldwin could more easily topple in the
general election.
Aware of the challenges shell face in
2018, Baldwin has stated her mantra
heading into the race will be economic
issues a message that proved
successful for Bernie Sanders during
the presidential primary after his win in
that state as well as the importance of
building American industry.
The plan to keep economic issues front-
and-center is evident in Baldwins statement
on Tuesday in response to Trumps visit to
Wisconsin to promote his Buy American,
Hire American executive order.
The promises that have been made
to our workers must be kept, and I stand
ready to work with President Trump
and take action that respects Made in
Wisconsin hard work with real reforms
and results, Baldwin said.

Wisconsin voters in November 2018.

already come up during the Senate
campaign via right-wing website Breitbart
News, which issued an email blast in
support of drafting Milwaukee Sheri
David Clarke whos black, but a critic
of Black Lives Matter, and a guns rights
supporter to challenge Baldwin.

reads the email blast, which is signed by
Jack Daly, the former congressional chief
of sta and counsel to now U.S. Attorney
General Je Sessions.
The email blast, which calls for
donations of up to $5,000, says Clarke
deserves a bigger stage, and he wants
to run, but has to get enough national
support to combat the liberal money his
opponent gets from Hollywood, the Gay
& Lesbian Victory Fund, Lesbian PAC,
and elsewhere. (The Lesbian PAC is
apparently a reference to LPAC.)
Fear-mongering about Baldwins sexual
orientation in a Breitbart email blast could
be a sign of things to come if the Senate
race is competitive and the Republican
side pulls out all the stops.
Ross, whos covered Wisconsin politics
for 17 years, said Baldwins sexual
orientation wasnt a major issue during
her rst Senate run, and doesnt expect it
to bein 2018.
There hasnt been anything overt
about that in her races that Ive seen
lately, Ross said. Now does that mean
there wont be mailers to certain interest
groups...I cant promise you that, but it
has not been a major issue in the last few
campaigns that Ive seen.

Russian newspaper, earlier this month
reported authorities in the predominantly
Muslim and semi-autonomous Russian

with electric shocks and glass bottles that
have been forced into their anuses.

Chechen authorities have sent gay men to
secret prisons that have been described
as concentration camps. The Russian
LGBT Network, a St. Petersburg-based
advocacy group that has launched an
emergency campaignwith All Out, a global
LGBT activist organization, to evacuate
gay men from Chechnya, conrmed these
reports to the Washington Blade.
Olga, an LGBT rights advocate in
Moscow who asked the Blade not to
publish her last name, on Wednesday
said she and her colleagues are working
with gay Chechens who have been able
to ee.

Tillerson, Trump silent
Former Vice President Joe Biden
on April 14 said he is disgusted and
appalled by the arrests.
When faced with such crimes of hate

in a statement he posted to the Penn
Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia
Freeland on April 15 described the arrests
and persecution of gay Chechen men
as reprehensible and urged Russian
authorities to thoroughly investigate
them. British Foreign Minister Boris
Johnson and Vitit Muntarbhorn, who is
the U.N.s rst LGBT and intersex rights
watchdog, are among those who have
also publicly condemned the situation.
The State Department in an April
7 statement said it is increasingly
concerned about the situation in
Chechnya and urged the Russian
government to criticize the arrests and
conduct an investigation into them. Fifty
members of Congress on the same day
asked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to
publicly condemn them.
Tillerson who met with Russian
President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on April
12 has not spoken publicly about the
arrests or the secret prisons in which the
gay men have been held. President Trump
has also not commented about them.
Agence France-PressereportedPutins arrests of the gay Chechen men and ways
spokesperson told reporters late last
week the Kremlin does not have any
reliable information about the arrests.
The Associated Press on April 16
saidChechen President Ramzan Kadyrov
categorized the international outcry
over the gay mens arrests as attempts
that are being made to blacken our
society, lifestyle, traditions and customs.
Kadyrovs spokesperson told a Russian
government news agency earlier this
month it is impossible to prosecute
those who are not in the republic.
The existence of concentration camps
is a serious breach of all international
human rights conventions, said the
Brazilian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans
Association in a statement it released on
April 10.
Laura Weinstein, president of Grupo Accin
y Apoyo a Personas Trans, a trans advocacy
group that is based in the Colombian capital
of Bogot, on April 14 posted to her Twitter
account a satellite picture that reportedly
shows one of the secret prisons in which gay
men are being held.
In this camp in Chechnya people are
being tortured, locked up and exterminated
for being gay and trans, she wrote.
Israeli LGBT rights advocates on April
14 held an emergency meeting at the
oces of the Aguda, the Israeli National
LGBT Task Force, in Tel Aviv to discuss the

other LGBT advocacy groups have urged
the U.N. to launch an investigation into the

Pastor of Carroll church receives award

Rev. Marty Kuchma, who has been pastor at St. Pauls United Church of Christ
in Westminster, Md., since 2005, received the 25th annual Carroll County Human
Relations Commissions 2017 Human Relations Award last month.
According to the Carroll County Times, St. Pauls Consistory (church council)
President Ben Rogers wrote in the March church newsletter Highlights that
Kuchma was recognized for his many eorts in addressing homelessness,
diversity, inclusion, and other important issues with which we are faced in
Carroll County.
St. Pauls, the rst and only open and arming church in Carroll County, has
been the venue for PFLAG-Westminster meetings since 2011. In addition to the
monthly general meetings, We host First Fridays for LGBT youth as a safe space
for conversation, games, fellowship, Michael Teare, a gay man and an elder at
the church, told the Blade.
Teare calls Rev. Kuchma a hero and an amazing man.
I was drawn to St. Pauls because of its open and arming stance when that
was still taboo in Carroll County, says Teare. Pastor Marty made me welcome
my rst visit to the church, and I have never left.
Judy Gaver, a member of St. Pauls and a member of the PFLAG-Westminster
chapter steering committee, agreed.
I honestly can think of no one more deserving to be the recipient of this
award, she told the Blade. Among the myriad duties Marty performs as the
pastor of St. Pauls, and numerous other local councils and committees on which
he sits, he is also a founding member and an active steering committee member
of PFLAG Westminster-Carroll County chapter. Marty was the pastor when St.
Pauls became an open and arming congregation in 2008.

LGBT Youth Prom on tap

The third annual LGBT Youth Prom is set for May 5 from 7-11 p.m. at the Grand,
225 North Charles St. in Baltimore. The event, which is themed Enchanted
Forest 2017, is solely for LGBT youth and supportive youth allies between the
ages of 14 and 19 who want to experience prom within a welcoming and safe
space without fear of prejudice.
There will be food, entertainment, and an interactive community resource
fair. Though there is no cost for this event, online registration is required and
all attendees must present a valid picture ID for entry. Youth can register at
lgbtqprombmore.eventbrite.com. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are
prohibited at this event. Security will be on-site, and all volunteers are
background checked.

Same-sex marriage brings health benets

SEATTLE Same-sex marriage is good for overall health and sense of well being a
new University of Washington study reports.
For years, studies have linked marriage with happiness among heterosexual
couples. But a study from the UW School of Social Work is among the rst
to explore the potential benets of marriage among LGBT couples, News
Medical reports. Its part of a national, groundbreaking longitudinal study
with a representative sample of LGBT older adults, known as Aging with
Pride: National Health, Aging, Sexuality/Gender Study, which focuses on how
historical, environmental, psychological, behavioral, social and biological factors
are associated with health, aging, and quality of life.
UW researchers found that LGBT study participants who were married reported
better physical and mental health, more social support and greater nancial
resources than those who were single. The ndings were published in a February
special supplement of the Gerontologist. Wills & Trusts

Study nds trans kids avoid restroom at school

NEW YORK As yet another bathroom debate began to brew in Michigan
last week, a report released by LGBT rights advocates showed transgender
students often avoid using school restrooms because they feel uncomfortable
and unsafe, Newsweek reports.
Separation and Stigma: Transgender Youth and School Facilities, a document
published last week by the Movement Advancement Project, GLSEN, National
Center for Transgender Equality and the National Education Association, found
that 70 percent of transgender students said theyve gone out of their way to not
usecampus bathrooms. Pulling in data from a 2015 survey of youth and a 2016
study of adults, the report mentioned that transgender people revealed they not
only drank less but alsodeveloped urinary tract infections in their quest to skip
the public facilities, Newsweek reports.

Perez and the disappearing DNC
Party must focus on building
strong state organizations
PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights
and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly

The Democratic National Committee
has all but disappeared since its recent
elections except when theyre asking
for money.
I receive dozens of emails from the
DNC but not one explains who will be
making the decisions on how to spend
the money they raise or what the criteria
for spending it will be. I have tried calling
many times but get no response. When
I nally got someone in the press sec-
tion on the phone, I was politely told they
would get back to me but no one ever did.
Now before the attacks start I want to
make it clear my goal as a Democrat is to
see the DNC rebuilt and to build strong
state Democratic parties. Despite what
some might suggest after they read this,
I am not looking to re-litigate the Demo-
cratic presidential primary. I was a strong
supporter of Hillary Clinton but respect
Bernie Sanders ideas and hope he will
continue ghting for them.
I supported Tom Perez for chair of the
DNC and was pleased when immediately
after he won he asked dynamic Demo-
cratic Congressman Keith Ellison to join
him in a leadership role. That was on Feb.
25 in Atlanta. Since then there has been
little of substance coming out of the DNC
and the sta has all been asked to hand
in their resignations.
In the most recent fundraising email
from the DNC, signed only by Perez, he
said Next week, Bernie Sanders and I are
hitting the road to meet with Democrats
around the country and talk about how
were getting the Democratic Party back
on track. Bernie didnt sign the letter.
Bernie sent out a fundraising letter about
the same road trip never mentioning the
Democratic Party, but rather asking peo-
ple to donate to his reelection campaign.
My question to Perez is what track are
you getting the DNC on?
Sanders is building his own organiza-
tion Our Revolution and raising money
for his own campaign. He has said he will
only support the Democratic Party if he
likes what it does. He was pretty strong
about that in an interview after the DNC
election when it was reported, Sand-
DNC Chair TOM PEREZ is traveling with Bernie Sanders, while his partys national apparatus is
suspect.
ers also implied in response to Tappers
questioning that he would not give the
DNC his presidential campaigns massive
email list, which shattered previous re-
cords by raising $218 million online from
2.8 million donors. The list will be used
to transform the Democratic Party into
a party that stands for working families,
he said, implying that he wants his new
group, Our Revolution, to decide which
candidates will get access to that list and
reap its benets.
My support for Perez was based on his
commitment to work toward the goal of
rebuilding both the DNC and state Demo-
cratic Parties for the future not based on
any one persons ideas. He would urge
support of all Democratic candidates in
the next two election cycles 2017 and
2018 to take back control of the agenda
in state government and Congress.
I dont question Sanders right to ght
for the things he believes in. What is be-
ing questioned here are the decisions be-
ing made by Perez and whether he is truly
doing the right things to keep the com-
mitments he made during his campaign
to rebuild the Democratic Party in every
state and territory for the future.
I recently had a conversation with one
of the candidates who lost her bid to be
a vice chair of the DNC. She told me she
was participating on a DNC transition
phone call. My suggestion to her for the
DNC was they should be working with
Democrats on the Hill to draft a bill to
x the Aordable Care Act. When a draft
is created the DNC could hold public fo-
rums in every state to bring voters into
the discussion and at the same time use
the forums to build the state parties. Her
answer stunned me; she said she doesnt
think they can as Bernie is already hold-

ing forums. Well, Bernie has every right
to do that but what does that have to do
with the DNC?
Democrats need to focus on taking the
party into the future. Not in any one per-
sons image but rather as state parties that
will be able to eld candidates who can
take back the Congress in 2018 and just as
importantly take back state legislatures and
governorships to stop the current hemor-
rhaging of districts through redistricting to
favor Republicans in 2020 and beyond.
For the next two years, we shouldnt
be spending money and time challeng-
ing incumbent Democrats who have
proven they can win in their districts
and statewide. The DNC should be dis-
couraging primaries such as the one in
Virginia where the Lt. Governor Ralph
Northam who has won statewide and has
announced for governor is being chal-
lenging in a primary by Tom Perriello, a
one-term congressman who has never
run statewide. Northam already had the
endorsement of nearly every Democratic
state ocial and the governor. While in
normal times primary challenges may
be good, in this case we are wasting mil-
lions of dollars and thousands of volun-
teer hours that could be better spent on
winning the Virginia state legislature for
Democrats. Sanders has endorsed Per-
riello thereby encouraging this primary.
Again he is more than entitled to do that
but dividing Democrats isnt helpful to the
party in these times.
In Kansas, Democrats came close to win-
ning Mike Pompeos open seat. The DNC
needs to do an in-depth analysis of that
race to nd out if we lost because of the is-
sues focused on by the candidate or was it
lack of money? We need to know as we de-
termine the type of candidates the DNC and

state parties will recruit across the nation in
2018. A good candidate for Democrats in
Kansas might be a terrible candidate for
Democrats in New York or California. That
is why we need strong state Democratic
parties to help with recruitment.
Two months seems to be long enough
to wait to have sta in place and a focused
plan for the work needed to rebuild the
party. During this congressional recess,
Perez should be touring the nation with
Democratic oceholders in each state
those men and women who have won
oce as Democrats because they found
the way to reach their constituency. Dem-
ocrats need to build a base for the future
and highlight those candidates in local
news rather than focusing on national g-
ures. These Democratic winners should
get the exposure they need to move up
the ranks; from school board to county
council to state legislature to Congress.
Our goal cant be to build an ultra-
progressive Democratic Party in each
state when in some states that wont win
elections. Rather, we must build a strong
Democratic Party in each state that can
win elections. We should build organiza-
tions that can speak to the voters they
need to win over. Voters ranging from
moderate to progressive; the poor, young
and old, millennials, immigrants, workers,
the middle class and voters from every
ethnicity, gender, race, orientation, reli-
gion and culture.
These voters will not agree on every is-
sue or every candidate. But the successful
Democratic Party in each state, while sup-
porting the overriding principles of fair-
ness and decency the Democratic Party
stands for, will be able to nd and sup-
port candidates in each area of their state
who can and will win.

gays and lesbians. After all, there was soon-
to-be-Vice President Mike Pence, the sexu-
ally repressed braintrust behind the Indiana
anti-gay religious freedom bill turned huge
debacle. But there was also that bizarre mo-
ment, as the New York Times pointed out this

In 2011, a few friends and I saw the
need for an online gay community that
could connect people. We wanted to cre-
ate a safe space that could connect future
dates with each other, connect future
husbands to one another, and connect
people for friendships that would last a
lifetime. We chose the name Hornet for
our edgling community because it sym-
bolized the most social and communal of
species. It was also a species that would
aggressively protect the safety of its nest.
In many ways it spoke to how we felt as
people. We wanted to build a community
that we would also work hard to protect.
That was in 2011 and yet now, more than
ever, we must continue to build safe com-
munities for ourselves and protect them
for generations to come.
In 2011, our LGBTQ+ community was
making incredible strides on the long
march toward civil rights and social ac-
ceptance. We were setting an example for
what it meant to build inclusive communi-
ties for ourselves and our allies. As Ameri-

week, where Trump uttered a large rainbow
ag at one of his trademark raucous rallies.
Granted, while he was doing so, Lee Green-
woods God Bless the USA was blaring,
which Im guessing is the song that most Re-
publicans choose to masturbate to. So, again,
who knows what that meant. Im guessing he
had no idea what that ag symbolized.
As I laid out in a column following his elec-
tion, LGBT Americans could face assaults from
all sides during the Trump presidency. And not
from Trump himself really, but from his reli-
gious-right appointees and the policies they en-
act. Here are but a few weve seen already, and
remember, we havent even hit 100 days yet.
We Dont Count. As the Blade reported
last month, weve essentially been erased. Ac-
cording to a draft of the 2020 Census, sexual
orientation and gender identity will not be
questions in the counting of Americans. And
to be sure, this is some bullshit. So much is
cans, we were leading by example as a
beacon for acceptance by tearing down the
walls that isolated us and building bridges
in this country and around the world.
We didnt know it at the time, but our LG-
BTQ+ community would soon be included
for the rst time in a presidential inaugural
address as President Obama eloquently
stated, We, the people, declare today that
the most evident of truths, that all of us
are created equal, is the star that guides us
still, just as it guided our forbearers to Sen-
eca Falls and Selma and Stonewall, just as
it guided all those men and women, sung
and unsung, who left footprints along this
great Mall to hear a preacher say that we
cannot walk alone, to hear a king proclaim
that our individual freedom is inextricably
bound to the freedom of every soul on
Earth. It was a singular moment that high-
lighted the best of American values and our
commitment to protect LGBTQ+ communi-
ties across the world.
Fast forward to 2017. Our American
LGBTQ+ community has achieved mar-
riage equality. Our American LGBTQ+
community is being included for the rst
time under the 1964 Civil Rights Act for
workplace protections. Our community
can serve openly and proudly in the mili-
tary. Our families are growing with every
state now allowing gays and lesbians to
gleaned from the Census. More importantly,
precious resources are allocated based on
that information. More broadly still, its not
just the law, the nuts and bolts and practi-
calities of them, that matters sometimes. Its
the tone the law sets. Setting in stone what
matters to a society and the values it intends
to uphold. Just like it wasnt the actual hate
crime legislation passed almost a decade ago
that was important, though not being beaten
up and killed of course is important. It was
the government being on record that that
wasnt cool anymore that really spoke vol-
umes. Now the record is being altered.
Anti-Trans Attacks. I guess we can just
ask former North Carolina Governor Pat Mc-
Cory if beating up on transgender Americans
still carries with it some political expediency.
Apparently, some still think so. Now under
the auspices of Jeerson Beauregard Ses-
sions III (yes, really), the Justice Department
adopt children into loving homes.
But standing in stark contrast to these
gains that come from a long-held tradi-
tion of American values, we see the rise
in hate crimes against our communities.
We are seeing a rise in discriminatory
laws in states against LGBTQ+ people.
We see transgender women of color be-
ing murdered every month. We see the
rise in calls to eliminate federal funding
for critical HIV and AIDS research. We see
the rise in in our LGBTQ+ youth reach-
ing out to suicide prevention lines. And
as the United States sees continued at-
tacks against our nest, our communities,
and our homes, we are seeing what that
means across the globe as well. Implicitly
or explicitly removing the best of Ameri-
can values from a global stage allows for
the propagation of crimes against hu-
manity. It is being widely reported that
gay men are being rounded up in Chech-
nya and being tortured, held in concen-
tration like camps and ultimately being
murdered.These heinous crimes are be-
ing denied by that government because,
as a body, they deny our very existence.
You cannot arrest or repress people who
just dont exist in the republic, said Alvi
Karimov, a spokesman for Chechen lead-
er Ramzan Kadyrov when speaking to the
Interfax news agency.

began rolling back Obama-era protections
for transgender school children.
Trickle-Down Hate. Eric Fanning was
Obamas pick to be Secretary of the Army,
the largest branch of the U.S. military. Fan-
ning, himself gay, did a great deal to make the
armed forces more inclusive and hospitable
to LGBT Americans wishing to serve. Trumps
pick for this position is Tennessee state leg-
islator Mark Green, and hes referred to us
as diseased. What does this mean going
down the chain of command? What does it
mean when he and others like him assume
positions within Trumps executive branch
and begin setting a tone of spite and malice
toward LGBT Americans?
All of these people and their policies will
have to play out. In many ways we will be
ghting a war on a thousand fronts, from
what seems every other state legislature or
school board across the country at times.
And really, who knows whats to come from
a hundred dierent Mark Greens and doz-
ens of Je Sessions? As Pride month nears
and the national march for LGBT rights ap-
proaches, the question could very well be not
what are we marching for but what are we
not marching for.
VIEWPOINT
As an American, I brought the struggles
and victories of the American heroes who
fought at Seneca Falls, Selma and Stone-
wall to our vision for the Hornet commu-
nity. And now, six years later with over
20 million members of our global com-
munity, its clear that attacks on LGBTQ+
people both here and abroad are on the
rise. With new atrocities being reported in
countries like Chechyna and hate crimes
on the rise here at home, it is time that we
rise again to safeguard our communities.
As President Obama so thoughtfully
spoke about our individual freedom be-
ing inextricably bound to the freedom
of every soul on Earth, we call on all LG-
BTQ+ Americans to ght for the growing
number of our marginalized brothers and
sisters who are under attack. This is the
time to bring the best of American values,
hopes and dreams back to the forefront
of our national dialogue. With technology,
with community and with each other, we
will continue to build on the advance-
ments that were happening in 2011 when
we launched our online home. Like the
hornet, we will protect our nests and we
will carry on the American dream.

Navigating D.C.s strong housing market
Officials want to attract
newcomers while not
pricing out long-term
Washingtonians

Ed Wood is a D.C.-based Realtor with
City Houses LLC for 20 years and former
president of the District of Columbia As-
sociation of Realtors. He sells in all eight
wards and averages 15-20 sales per year.
He spoke with the Washington Blade
this week on local housing trends, rent-
ing vs. buying and why the rental market
is soft now, but likely to explode in the
coming years. His comments have been
slightly edited for length.
WASHINGTON BLADE: It seems most
agree in Washington were back to pre-re-
cession prices and multiple offers on real
estate. Is that your assessment?
ED WOOD: Yes. D.C. was in a much
better position during and after the re-
cession. We saw a flattening but then it
picked up fairly quickly and the market
has been really strong ever since about
2011, 2012. We regularly see multiple of-
fers still on properties.
BLADE: Is the asking price sort of an
opening bid in those situations?
WOOD: It depends where its priced. If
theyve priced a little below asking, theyll
often get multiple offers and it will bump
up. If theyre priced at asking or above, we
do see things sit on the market because
of that. Buyers are more savvy and more
cautious than they were pre-2008.
BLADE: Were there many cases in D.C.
where a homeowner may have been un-
derwater on their mortgage during the
recession but got out of it once the econ-
omy rebounded?
WOOD: There wasnt a lot of that in
D.C. It was more in the suburbs and more
likely the farther you got out from the
city but those prices we saw coming back
by last year. Occasionally in some of the
more developing neighborhoods we saw
some slow downs and some price soft-
ening but those prices have completely
come back. Many values have increased
above what people paid.
BLADE: How is the market for rentals
vs. sales in Washington?
WOOD: The rental market has been

fairly soft for a while, while the buy-
ing market has been strong. A lot of the
buildings that are going up in the city
have been rental buildings as opposed to
condos and thats because the long-term
demographic outlook for the city were
still gaining about a thousand residents a
month is expected to be over a million
by 2030 so there are a lot of companies
from around the country who see this as
a really good rental market and theyre
interested in the long term. Were not
seeing the number of condos we saw pre-
2008, so thats why we see the competi-
tion. Theres still not enough inventory.
BLADE: Why is the rental market soft if
the projections are so strong?
WOOD: Theyre building for that pro-
jected million residents. [D.C.s current
population is about 672,000.] You cant
suddenly build all the units youll need,
so theyre building them now for five-10
years down the road. These are big com-
panies who work in the long-term market
so they can afford to do this. Sometimes
theyll even go to developers building a
condo building and say, Hey, we need a
rental building at this location. Would you
consider reconfiguring the design a bit to
turn it into a rental building and selling
the whole thing to us? Thats attractive to
developers because its a lot easier to sell
an entire building than individual units to
individual buyers.
BLADE: Those population projections
must be pretty solid then. Could some-
thing catastrophic throw a wrench in
those plans?
WOOD: Certainly. After 9-11 around
the country, it just killed the market im-
mediately and people stopped moving to
D.C. immediately. But then things turned
around. A lot of things could happen to
change things, but hopefully nothing of
that scale. All the demographics I have
looked at are pointing toward that large
population growth at least through 2030.
Others that go beyond that are less reli-
able in my opinion.
BLADE: Based on what were seeing
now and with those kinds of projections,
will gentrification spread across the riv-
er?Whats it like in those wards now?
WOOD: Theres a lot of interest in Ana-
costia and theres a lot of change going
on there. Bigger companies are looking at
that area. One of the issues there has
been a lack of services and also people
whove been priced out of other areas are
looking over there. Theres been a lot of
revitalization there but theres also been
a very active group of long-term residents
who want to see improvements but dont
want to be pushed out. I know the mayor
and city council members are focusing
more on that part of the city. Theres even
talk of moving the Reeves building at 14th
and U., of selling that building and mov-
ing it over there.
BLADE: With all the gentrification that
has spread down 14th Street to Florida
Avenue and starting into the Northeast
quadrant look how different Blooming-
dale, for instance, looks from what it was
like 10 years ago is it safe to assume
that trend will continue or is that an over-
simplification?
WOOD: I think thats true. City govern-
ment for a long time was desperate to get
people to move back into the city. It was a
dying place as people were overall fleeing
out to the suburbs but thats turned around
and most cities are growing whereas the
suburbs are starting to die out. People want
to be closer and they want to spend more
time doing the things they like as opposed
to sitting in their car going to and from a
bigger house. The city government is taking
a renewed look at how that happens, how
that takes place and what it means for the
long-term city residents.
BLADE: They want to put some mecha-
nisms in place to absorb some of that
shock so to speak?
WOOD: Yes. Theres a lot of interest
in trying to move in that direction so we
dont have a city where only the wealthy
can afford to live. Whereas before they
were trying to stop people from flee-
ing the city, we dont even have to think
about that now.
BLADE: Do LGBT issues factor into D.C.
real estate to any significant degree?
WOOD: I havent seen it be much of a fac-
tor at all. D.C. has been such a gay-friendly
city for so long, I dont think its much of
a consideration. When theyre selling a
house, they just want the best price.
BLADE: Is there any sense of a gaybor-
hood anywhere in 2017? Do people buy
with that in mind?
WOOD: I dont see that anymore. When
I was first in the business 20 years ago,
there was a desire, usually by gay men, to
want to be near Dupont. I live near there.
My husband and I have had a house
here for 20 years so weve really seen the
change on 14th Street. When we moved
here, our friends thought we were crazy.
Now they say, How did you know? We
didnt know. We just bought where we
could afford and at the time we wanted
to be near Dupont.

Behind the scenes of competing offers
The rules change
amid a bidding war

Its April, which means were in peak
real estate season. Unfortunately for buy-
ers and fortunately for sellers that
sometimes means bidding war situations
with competing offers. Inevitably, when
we have a client facing multiple offers,
they ask if the seller will counter their
offer or if they will know what the other
people are offering. We hate to be the
bearer of bad news, but usually the an-
swer to both questions is: NOPE.
If youre a buyer, heres what you need
to know about why offering in a competi-
tive situation with multiple offers is a bit
tricker than a normal offer presentation.
PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD
WHEN DEALING WITH COMPETING OF-
FERS. If youre competing, that means the
rules of the game change. In a normal
scenario, you can come in a bit lower than
where youd like to end up and negotiate
back and forth with the seller. With com-
peting offers, your first offer should be
your best offer.
In almost every multiple offer scenario,
the sellers and the listing agent will re-
view all of the offers presented to them
and simply pick the best one.

Do not expect a counter. In some sce-
narios if two offers are very close, they
may ask one buyer to clean up a small
term or contingency. Plan to put your best
foot forward to make sure you are even in
competition. In other words, always pro-
ceed as if the seller will not counter your
offer. You should feel satisfied at the end
of the day that your best offer was made,
even if you are not the winning offer so

you arent stuck wondering what if?
WHY THE HUSH HUSH? ARE THERE
OTHER OFFERS? For starters, unless
given consent by the client, the listing
agent might not be able to share even
IF there are other offers. In our area, the
agreement if the listing broker has the
property. If the seller hasnt given that
permission to the broker, then they cant
let us know there is a competing offer.
The good news is that it is the norm for
this information to be disclosed. Typically,
we will know before we write if we are the
only offer, if there is one (or 21) we are
competing against.
IF SO, HOW MANY? Again, typically
agents will know exactly how many of-
fers are in competition. But, sometimes
the listing agent gets busy and doesnt
update all of the agents. We could think
there are three offers but three more
came in at the deadline. We always are
on the offensive checking with the listing
agent until the very last minute, so we
almost always know the score here. But
keep in mind that some agents wont pro-
vide timely updates.
AND HOW GOOD ARE THEY? Unfor-
tunately, agents very likely wont know
how good (or bad) the other offers are.
The seller and listing agent have zero mo-
tivation to tell you what the other offer(s)

look like because they want you to beat
it! We might hear tidbits from the agent
that we can interpret. For example, its a
beatable offer if it is low, or we have two
excellent offers in hand and are expecting
two more, which means it will likely es-
calate with contingencies waived. A good
rule of thumb is that the more offers are
on the property, the better the offers will
be.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN A MULTIPLE OF-
FER SITUATION. Bottom line? Being in a
situation with competing offers can be
scary. Arm yourself with the necessary
information, be patient and flexible, and
always put your best foot forward by pre-
senting your best and final offer.
Of course, enlist an experienced and
trusted Realtor so you always have the
best advice. Remember, not all sellers
or listing agents are created equal. Your
agents advice will be different in each
situation, depending on how much infor-
mation is known and how forthcoming
the information is from the listing agent.
Sometimes, the best offer might not win
the day, but we will make sure you arent
overpaying.

Millennial homebuyers get creative through videos

Creating an atmosphere of
comfort, trust with clients

In any business, I believe, there is the

responsibility to uphold oneself to the
highest standards. That is the essence
of doing your job well. Then, there is the
next step, which is promoting oneself in
an authentic way.
As a real estate agent, finding non-tradi-
tional ways to advertise buying and selling
homes requires creativity and planning. Im
always looking for substantive, thoughtful,
and qualitative ways to get peoples atten-
tion. So I decided to find a way to convey
the fun that I was having with my clients
during the home selling process.
Fun is the primary concept I stuck to
when writing, storyboarding, and direct-
ing the recent video, which features my
actual clients, who were excited to partici-
pate in a fun, quality video to showcase
the experience of the sale of their home.
The rap is part of a creative series I want-
ed to bring to Millennial-aged consumers
to help them understand and become
less intimidated by the process.
The idea for the first video in a series I
have now produced, began when I real-
ized how awkward meeting a real estate
agent can be for a lot of Millennials. Sud-
denly you meet this real estate agent
that you dont know, youre immediately
thrown into talking about your current
financial situation and your reasons for
buying or selling a home, and all of the
details and narrative that go along with
the process. Its a relationship that quickly
gets personal. The element of trust needs
to be present and earned from the very
first meeting if the relationship is going to

be a success and the client reaches their
goal of home buying and/or selling.
I wanted to find a way to take away the
initial intimidation of meeting a real es-
tate agent. I thought I could help achieve
this through the medium of video. Unlike
a printed brochure, a video allows you
to experience the personality, sense of
character and authenticity of a person;
nearly as much meeting someone in-per-
son. The viewer sees the agent interact-
ing with actual clients, and hears directly
from clients who are speaking about the
agent and the process. A video provides
a sense of trust and ease that becomes a
great introduction to sellers and buyers.
My video bio highlighted about six cli-
ents of mine buyers and sellers and
the next video featured my clients Paul
and Melissa and their dog Mumford. As we
all know, everyone loves dogs in videos.
I was getting a lot of good feedback
about using the videos to help educate
the public. Then one night over dinner,
one of my friends said, You know, Kevin,
your video feels professional, but we had
a lot of fun too, and I dont get a sense of
a lot of fun in the first two videos. I said in
response: Ha! Challenge accepted!
I brainstormed for a while about how
to combine elements of professionalism,
fun and substance. My idea to create a
music video was born from a fun best-
man speech I gave a few years ago when
I re-wrote and sang some of the couples
favorite songs with an a capella group. It
was a blast.
That best man speech lasted about
10 minutes. I knew this video to keep
peoples attention had to be close to

30 seconds. I started writing the song and
soon after, my clients Charlie and Morgan
and I were practicing once a week to sync
the rhythm and pitch of our voices (the
best we could).
The experience brought us closer to-
gether and made us laugh the entire time.
Thus, working with video as a medium
for Millennials I believe has created an
atmosphere of comfort, trust, and confi-
dence in the real estate industry. Being
able to create videos with clients only
further educates Millennials about real
estate. Its a win-win creative, educational
process for all of us.

ally and has contributed to numerous
LGBT organizations including the Trevor
Project. She has now written a book,
There is No F*cking Secret, a series of
letters that focus on personal topics such
as her mothers cancer diagnosis, her
fathers battle with addiction and her own
struggle with body image.
Osbourne spoke with the Washington
Blade on everything from growing up
with Joan Rivers to being the child of
famous parents and more.
WASHINGTON BLADE: What made
you decide now was the time to write
a book about your life?
KELLY OSBOURNE: Ive wasted so
much time of my life. Whenever anyone
asks me, What do you regret most?,
I always said, I regret nothing. Until I
started writing this book and I realized
there was one thing I truly fucking regret.
And its that I wasted so much time in my
life trying to be anyone but who I really
am. Its such a miserable fucking journey.
Its so deating and you get lost. I let the
media and public perception tell me who
I really was and I fed into it. That is my
responsibility and my fault because I
did do that. But I was so young, I didnt
know any better. Its my chance now
to be like, Fuck that, cut the crap, this
is who I am. I am telling you who I am.

BLADE: Did you write the book in the
format of letters because you wanted
it to be more personal?
OSBOURNE: No. We live in a world
of millennials now. People like instant
gratication. Theyll read a headline and
a few sentences and youre an instant
genius. When it comes to reading a book I
even realized, I dont want to read it from
start to nish. I like to pick it up, put it
down and you can start from all dierent
places. Like a book of short stories. I like
books like that because you dont have to
commit to nishing it all at the same time.
You can look at the chapters and see if
theres anything that relates to you and
go to that chapter. Im praying my parents
dont read the vagina one.
BLADE: Was there anything else
you were worried about your family
reading?
OSBOURNE: Yes. Every member of
my family has written a book. What I
realized is we can all be in the same
room and see the same thing, but we
all have a dierent perception of what
happened. We see it dierently because
were dierent people. I made sure that I
sent the book to everybody in my family
with a note saying, Guys this is the book.
Anything you want taken out let me
know, no questions asked. Because they
are my family, I do talk about them so I
had to give them that respect. Especially
with my brother (Jack Osbourne) who has
two children. I would never want to say
anything that could aect them because
you never know what the media is going
to pick up on.
Im noticing right now from the press
theyre really focusing on the drug aspect
of everything. I havent done drugs, weed
excluded because I dont consider that

Real Housewives mastermind coming to Baltimore with pal Cooper
Some celebs are witty and fabulous
enough, they dont need a script. They
can just get on stage and start gabbing
and people eat it up.
Such is the case with gay pals Anderson
Cooper (of CNN fame) and Andy Cohen,
who almost gives Ryan Seacrest a run for
his money in terms of having his hand
in the most pop culture pots, with their
show AC2: Deep Talk and Shallow Tales.
Cohen is an Emmy-winning host of
Watch What Happens: Live on Bravo
late night, executive producer of the Real
Housewives franchise and a New York
Times bestselling author.
The pair were last here in 2015 at the
Warner Theatre in Washington. This is the
rst AC2 show in Baltimore. Cohen spoke
to the Blade last week by phone from his
home in New York.
WASHINGTON BLADE: Whats your
favorite on-stage conversation youve
ever had with Anderson?
ANDY COHEN: Its really like going
out to a bar with us and just hanging
out. Just a night of storytelling and fun
conversation. Theres a story in the show
that kind of just stayed in the show and
we dont really tell it outside of the show
which involves a near-death experience
that Anderson had that I was involved
in thats quite shocking and terrifying. I
dont know that thats my favorite, but its
certainly one of the more shocking ones.
BLADE: Whats the most outrageous
audience question you ever got during
one of these?
COHEN: Oh my God, Ive had someone
ask how hung we are. Ive had people ask
if were tops or bottoms. Weve gotten
everything.
BLADE: Do you playfully deect?
COHEN: Well I try to answer everything.
Anderson has a little more decorum than I do.
BLADE: Are you ever oended? Nobody
would have asked that 30 years ago.
COHEN: Yeah, I know. No, because
I like it and think its fun. I think people
expect me to be open about anything, so
Im OK with it.
BLADE: Do you ever have to steer the
tone to keep it from getting to heavy or
serious or silly or whatever?
COHEN: Were pretty good. We vibe it
out pretty well with each other. We really
just talk to each other and then we open
it up towards the last half hour. We keep

it on track pretty well.
BLADE: Youre both well versed in
both hard news and pop culture. Is that
partially why it works?
COHEN: Yeah, I totally think so.
BLADE: How do you coordinate your
schedules. Youre both crazy busy.
COHEN: We just book it far, far in
advance and pray for the best.
BLADE: Your career path is so unusual
from going behind the scenes to being
a host and celeb. That would seem like
such a dierent skill set. Is it as unusual
as youd think?
COHEN: It is unusual but its been
kind of organic and I think thats why its
worked. One thing has led to the next,
so I dont question how it happened. Im
thrilled about it.
BLADE: By the time you did get in front
of the camera, you were pretty high up.
Was it ever scary not getting to make your
rookie mistakes on a smaller stage?
COHEN: Not really, no. I think it all
happened for a reason.
BLADE: Trump has brought narcissism
into the national dialogue in a way we
havent seen before. Does everyone
who signs up for a reality show like Real
Housewives have some narcissism
issues in your experience?
COHEN: Yes, I think absolutely. I think
anybody who opens themselves up to
that kind of moment, you know, open up
their lives in that way in that way I think,

for sure. I think all of us who decide to go
in front of the camera have some level of
narcissism. I dont know if its a bad thing
or what.
BLADE: Dealing with a whole cast of
those types sounds like a nightmare. Is it?
COHEN: Oh absolutely. Thats why
these shows are so successful still.
People ask that and its because of the
casting. People ask if theyre real or not
and theyre denitely real. We cast people
who are dramatic by nature and I think
thats why the shows are still going.
BLADE: You and Teresa Giudice from
The Real Housewives of New Jersey were
friends at the time she and her husband
were sentenced to jail. Was it hard being
friends but also covering it for the show?
COHEN: Not really. I think we have
good relationships, so yeah.
BLADE: Whats been your favorite
moment from one of the reunions?
COHEN: Oh wow. Theres a moment
involving a bunny thats coming up in
the Beverly Hills reunion. That was pretty
kind of hilarious. Thats coming up in the
next couple of weeks.
BLADE: Youve said Kellyanne Conway
would make a great housewife. What
would her opening tagline be?
COHEN: (pauses) I think it would be
about alternative facts. I think hers would
be the only truth that matters are my
alternative facts.
BLADE: Are you cool with it if it turns

COHEN: Yeah, I would be OK with that.
I was always a big soap opera fan and I
think it has replaced the soap opera. I
think its todays modern-day version of a
soap opera so I think thats an absolutely

BLADE: Does it ever surprise you which
cast members end up becoming huge in
pop culture?
COHEN: Sometimes. It used to surprise
me more but now kind of nothing
surprises me. You know, because weve
been through it so many times.
BLADE: Pop culture is so instant
gratication, like junk food. Not to be
all Oprah or anything, but youre so
immersed in it, is it a soul drain over time?
Do you meditate or anything?
COHEN: Well, I think in the last few
years my social life has actually Im
probably working much more than I was,
but I used to go out almost every night
after the show so I dont anymore. Im
still obviously a very social person, but
Im much less so than I was before and
I think theres something Im a little
more calm now.
BLADE: There must be moments where
you just wish everybody would go away.
COHEN: Its all right. Its all fun, you
know what I mean? I consider myself very
blessed. I know it sounds trite or lame or
whatever, but its good problems to have.
Im sure, by the way, that in a couple
years there will be a lot less demand for
my services or interest in me and then Ill
have more time.
BLADE: You and Anderson like to
egg each other on. Are you ever afraid
youll say something on TV or stage and
suddenly be in really hot water? Like some
Natalie Maines moment or something?
COHEN: Yeah, I worry about that all the
time and it was a theme in my last book
actually. It was just me kind of always
wondering if this would be the moment
that I would wind up blowing it all.

family to rape lesbians to cure them.
Given the combined stigmatization
of gays and rape victims, Tadanki was
unable to speak directly with any victims
of corrective rape or rmly document
statistics about the crime.
Case studies across the globe, Takanki
says, have chronicled cases of corrective
rape on women whove been discovered
to be lesbians and as heinous as it may
sound the immediate kith and kin of
the girl permit strangers to let the girl
get raped, foolishly assuming that that is
the only corrective measure for their girl
to be cured from lesbianism and she will
start thinking normally.
Filmed in the Indian city of Bangalore,
Satyavati is about a trio of female
friends. Two are a lesbian couple and the
third is their straight friend. When the

for a corrective rape of the women by the
girls uncle and several of his friends.
Over several agonizing months
and with the fervent support of the
queer community in
Tadanki was able to crowdsource her

campaign #ISupportSatyavati to raise
awareness about homophobia in
India. Supporters were asked to post
a picture along with captions calling
for the stigma around homosexuality
to be destroyed (#stopcorrectiverape
and #acceptsexuality). Supporters and
activists can still create their own image
at isupportsatyavati.
The lm is a work of ction and not a
documentary, Tadanki says. The primal
focus of making this lm is to let the
audience understand that lesbianism is
not a disease that needs to be cured; it is
as natural as heterosexuality.
In crafting her story, Tadanki and her
creative team had to, be careful about the
plot of the story, the sensitivity of the subject
and the characters in the story and other
minute details concerning the dialogues
exchanged and even the expressive
interjections used by the characters.
She says the lm is ultimately a
statement on issues of humanity that
supersede culture.
(I hope it) manages to open a debate
about the tragic realities it speaks about
and changes the mindset of at least a few
individuals, it could be termed a success,
she says.
When the movie screens as part of
XTRA, the Reel Armations monthly
lm series, the discussion will be led by
Rayceen Pendarvis, host of the popular
Ask Rayceen Show.

local Renaissance man

After laying low for a few years, local
singer-songwriter and author Stewart
Lewis is back with two new projects.
His three-song EP When the Lights Go
Down, recorded with producer R. Walt
Vincent in Los Angeles, is out now. Stealing
Candy, a novel about the high school-aged
daughter of a famous rock star who gets
kidnapped from boarding school, will be
released May 2. Its Lewiss fth book, his
third in the young adult genre.
Lewis and husband Steve Swenson
(married three-and-a-half years; together
11) moved to Washington three years
ago for Swensons job in radio. Theyd
been in New York ve years. Lewis, whos
40-something, is a Boston native.
Lewis basically wears three hats. In
addition to being a singer/songwriter and
author, he also teaches narrative non-
ction at the University of Maryland.
The three of them together kind of
make a career, he says.
It was mostly a coincidence that the book
and EP, which features more of his signature
melodic, acoustic guitar-heavy pop/rock,
were nished about the same time.
It was really just a natural progression,
he says. I nd as Im getting older, I dont
release music as quickly. I sort of waited
until I had just the right group of songs to
release. Im a little more judgmental than
I was when I was younger.
Lewis plays regularly at Mr. Henrys
Capitol Hill Pub & Restaurant for its
Thursday night Americana nights. He also
plays shows in New York, Los Angeles and
Boston, cities that have more venues for

Swim camp gives athletes
techniques to up their game

It has been a longstanding tradition
in the sports community for athletes to
attend training camps in their respective
sports. Most camps feature top-notch
coaching, intensive training and athletes
who want to better themselves. Attendees
in any given sport run the gamut from
ages 8-80, lay to professional athletes.
One can also nd training camps in
the LGBT sports community. Last month,
about 40 swimmers from New York to
California to Paris to D.C. attended the
annual Team New York Aquatics swim
camp for seven days of training at the
International Swimming Hall of Fame in
Fort Lauderdale.
Led by coaches Abi Liu, Brian Cairns
and David Hovey, a typical day for the
swimmers was as follows: morning dry
land training followed by a two-hour
practice in the pool, followed by a stroke
clinic. More dry land and another swim
practice was held each evening. Camp
bonding took place daily at restaurants,
Sebastian Beach, house parties and
nightclubs.
Meet one of the coaches and six swimmers
who participated at the swim camp.
Abi Liu
Location: Raised in Wenzhou, China.
Now living in San Jose, Calif.
Occupation: Head coach of 150 age
group swimmers at Peak Swimming.
Runs two swim schools, Saratoga Star
Aquatics and Milpitas Star Aquatics with
4,500 students weekly. Graduated from
San Jose State University.

swimming at age 8. Captured a title at the
Chinese Junior National Championships
at age 13 and was recruited to the
Chinese National Team. Former Chinese
national record holder in the 200 meter

This is very dierent from what I do
daily as an age group coach as masters
swimmers bring a dierent dynamic. I
came in with no expectations and I am

With low gas prices and climate-change
skeptics, youd think hybrids and other
green machines were on their way out.
But at the tony New York Auto Show this
month, automakers are showcasing more
eco-friendly rides than ever. Heres a
sneak peek at three stunners I just drove.
FORD FUSION HYBRID

Mpg: 43 city/41 highway
0-to-60 mph: 8.5 seconds
Toyota went all radical when it restyled
the new Prius, the granddaddy of all
hybrids. But Ford was much more subtle
with the Fusion Hybrid, gently tweaking
the grille, headlights and taillights. Thats
a good thing, because this cars Aston
Martin vibe, especially the sleek front end
and svelte side panels, is still fresh. Inside,
theres a user-friendly infotainment
system, extra storage bins and a modish
gearshift dial instead of a ho-hum gear
stick. And the quiet cabin, upscale
materials and 10-way power seats could
easily be mistaken for a European sport
sedan at twice the price. But theres no
such confusion when it comes to the so-
so acceleration and cornering, though
the Fusion still handles well for a midsize
hybrid. Its also more ecient than the
previous model, though the battery
pack cuts into trunk space. And it boasts
plenty of safety gear including blind-
spot monitor, rear cross-trac alert and
brake assist with pedestrian detection.
The adaptive cruise control now works
in stop-and-go trac. Coolest tech trick:
the self-parking function, which takes
control when navigating into a parallel or
perpendicular parking space.

personality. The sexy styling is outre edgy,

average acceleration. Fuel-eciency is

DEAR MICHAEL,
My sister, eight years older than I am,
came out at 17. My parents, very religious
and conservative, were sad and horried.
Theyve kept Kates sexual orientation
(together with her partner and two
children) a secret from their close-knit
community for many years.
I saw their deep disappointment and
sadness and as I got older, I resolved to
do my best, as their only other child, to
make it up to them by being the best son
they could ask for. Although as a teenager
I was aware of some attraction to other
guys, I resolved I would marry a woman
and give my parents lots of grandchildren
whom they could brag about to their
friends.
A lot of time has gone by and Im now
in my mid-30s. After years of pushing
myself to be involved with women, Ive
acknowledged I am really only attracted to
men. But I cant bring myself to come out
to my parents. I think it would completely
undo them to have both their children be
gay and not be able to nally enjoy the
same open pride in their progeny as their
friends and neighbors do.
I know I shouldnt be catering to their
small-mindedness but they are loving
people, albeit limited. They have spent
their lives in a small community and
depend enormously on the respect of
their friends, earned by tting in and
living up to the community standards of
faith and having a family.
Their hearts have already been broken
by my sister and I do not want to take
away all their hope.
But I cannot see myself marrying a
woman and having children with her
denying myself real love, deceiving the
woman I would marry and really giving
my children a phony life.
What to do?

I am sorry. You are in a tough bind.
This is really a case of being damned if
you do and damned if you dont. You will
have to decide which version of damned
you would rather tolerate: gravely
disappointing your parents or denying
yourself a life that may include a loving
partner.
To your great credit, you dont want to
lie to a potential spouse about who you
are or bring children into what would
essentially be a sham marriage.
But if you are unwilling to come out,
where would that lead you? A life spent
alone, denying yourself the possibility
of real love, all to give your parents the
vague and illusory hope that one day you
will give them everything theyve dreamed
of. Dont forget that their dream would
eventually have an expiration date, as
they came to realize that your marriage
to a woman was never going to happen.
I can well understand your not wanting
to bring further hurt to your parents. I get
that they come from and live in a world
where homosexuality is not accepted and
that they may not be able to transcend

their view of what is right and wrong in life.
What I dont know is how much you
(and possibly your sister) have tried over
the years to help your parents get some
outside support, for example through
PFLAG, a fantastic long-time organization
oering support and education for
families of LGBT people.I am hopeful that
your parents might be helped by nding
people to talk with who are in a similar
position. Having some sort of social
network with other parents might allow
them to move further along in accepting
you and your sister (and her family) and
feeling less alone and stigmatized by
having gay children.
I would also like to suggest that you
nd a family therapist who is both gay-

Osbourne says LGBT fans never gave up on me

a drug, since I was 24 years old. Im 33
this year. I got so much more shit being
fat than I ever did being a druggie. And
I think because I pointed it out so much
now theyre focusing back on the fact that
I was a druggie. But now Im looking at
whats going on in the media right now
and Im seeing how many deaths from
opioid abuse, and so it is a prevalent
topic, but I dont want that message to get
lost. Because its not just what the book
is about. Its about my experience looking
after my mom when she had cancer,
my Lymes disease, relationships, body
image, tting in, having no inner lter,
discovering who you are.
BLADE: Did you nd the writing
process dicult?
OSBOURNE: This is the second time,
but (the rst time) I honestly feel like
sabotaged it halfway through. When I
rst started writing (the rst book) I was
in a really good place, but by the end of
it I wasnt and everything I was advising
in the book I wasnt even listening to.
I wasnt doing it myself so I felt like I
was a hypocrite. This book is not just
redemption on that book, me nally
not only writing this but Im doing what
Im writing. Everybody feels like they
have to be perfect and they have to
look a certain way. Its not even about
being famous anymore, which is called
being an inuencer. The pressure that
young people are under just over the
simplest things. The sele that goes on
Instagram, that isnt a part of my level
of understanding. I have such a love/
hate relationship with social media but
it makes me really happy that it wasnt
around when I was younger because I
would have probably been arrested. And
that I didnt have to deal with that added
pressure as well. Its unbelievable.
BLADE: Being the child of
famous parents, whats the biggest
misconception people have?
OSBOURNE: My parents were very
smart with how they raised me. Back
in the days before cell phones, we had
beepers. I wanted one and my mom
said, You want one, you go get a job and
you pay for it yourself. So Ive had a job
and been self-sucient outside of my
parents. Ive had a job since I was 13. Ive
been self sucient outside of my parents
since I was 15. My parents taught us, You
want something, you work for it. When
youre a celebritys kid you have to prove
yourself 10 times over. Because you have
to prove its not just handed to you and
you have to gain the respect to prove
that you are hardworking and dont think
youre better than everyone else. But then
you do have to be better. Its a very weird
contradiction. People think, Oh youre
someones kid you dont do anything.
Im like, Ive been working since I was
15. I dont know how Im going to pay
my mortgage this month. People think
they get to do all of these fabulous things
and yes, we do, but anywhere there is
fabulousness, it attracts shit. And theres
a lot more shit in this industry than there
is fabulousness.
BLADE: Your mother is a co-host on
The Talk. Do you ever hear her say
anything on the show and think Mom,
I didnt need to know that?
OSBOURNE: Oh my god. If I ever have
to hear about my mom and dads sex
life Im like, Mom! I guess everybody
gets that in their own home, I just get it
on national TV. But its my mom. Shes
earned the right to say whatever the
fuck she wants. She has worked her ass
o. There are very few women in this
industry who can get to that level. Joan
Rivers is one of them and so is my mom.
They paid their dues. My mom would
never say anything to hurt me. Even
though sometimes I want to crawl into a
hole and die that she told people things
about me on national TV. Thats just what
it is. I probably would have told everyone
anyway. She birthed me so she has the
right. And of course, I was the only kid out
of my siblings that my mom didnt have
an epidural for. Im the, Do you know the
pain and suering? Thats what I get.
BLADE: Youve also been a big
supporter of the LGBT community.
Why has that type of advocacy been
important to you?
OSBOURNE: The LGBT community is
a community that never gave up on me
and that has supported me through thick
and thin. (The community) taught me to
believe in myself and taught me how to
do my makeup and to love yourself no
matter what anyone else thinks. Be who
makes you happy. Stand against the odds
and dare to be dierent and unique.
Everybody has a unique individual inside
of them. Its whether theyre brave enough
or not to show it to the world. They can
nd it within themselves to be brave and
show the world who they really are which
is a scary thing to do. Its easier said than
done. And within the gay community
there is so much creativity and love and
acceptance because theyve been the
outcasts of society or at home their whole
life. They know what that feels like. I was
the outcast too growing up with a satanic,
as they said, father in this country village.
Everybody thought that we were
satanists. I didnt really t in with
everybody because we were dierent.
My mom was dressed dierently to pick
us up from school so the parents didnt
judge us. Ive been locked in bathrooms
at school with the lights o and made to
pray for my sins because my father is a
satanist. And Im like, What is this? Its life that threw me in a way I didnt think
not like my parents were the equivalent
of the Beckhams. My mom is known as
the most badass business woman to ever
be in the music industry, in fact the world.
And my father is the creator of heavy
metal music. Its a lot to live up to being
their kids. Theyre icons in their own right.
They came from a time where things
werent instantaneous and you had to
work hard. I get that from my mom. If I
dont wake up and start working, my day
is shit.
BLADE: You seem like an open
person and the title of your book is
There is No F*cking Secret. But is
there anything people might not know
about you?
OSBOURNE: I am so empathic and
loyal to my own detriment. When I feel
like somebody is sad I can feel it when
they hug me. I want to do everything I
can to make them not feel sad. Because
feeling sad, lonely and not good enough
are the worst feelings in the world. I
know what that feels like to feel like that
every day. And I wish I could take that
from people. Im surprisingly really shy
at times when someone puts a camera
in front of me. I did a quick photo shoot
for someone recently and I like shut
down. My body language, my shoulders
went in. I will never be used to being in
front of a camera and my face shows it
because I always look like Im holding in
a fart. When I see the red carpets in the
magazines I see the girls doing the poses
over the shoulder and Im like I would
look like I have jaundice if I tried that. It
just isnt in me.
BLADE: Being on Fashion Police
with Joan Rivers, what was the best
advice she gave you?
OSBOURNE: Its in the book. Youve got
to nd the humor in absolutely everything
because laughter is not only the best
medicine, but its the best survival skill
too. Outside of my family and Dancing
with the Stars, Joan was one of the
only people who truly just believed in
me for me. Nothing to do with my past
or my present or my future. Nothing to
do with my family. She just wanted to
work with me. And being bestowed with
that honor with somebody I knew
Joan for 25 years. I was 6 years old the
rst time she interviewed me. Its the
most embarrassing interview ever. Im
scratching my vagina, yawned and stuck
my tongue out on the entire Fathers Day
(on The Joan Rivers Show) special. Im In Conversation with Kelly Cutrone
like, Oh God. But to have that honor
to be an apprentice to Joan Rivers for as

every year, ve and a half years? Shes
family. Were family. All the crew, I miss
them so much. Whenever I go into a
meeting at Universal, I pop in and go in
and say hi. Were all still really close.
BLADE: Youre coming to D.C. to
promote your book.
OSBOURNE: Im so excited because Im
going to Joans favorite place, the Sixth &
I Synagogue.
BLADE: Whats your favorite thing
about D.C.?
OSBOURNE: I spent at least two to three
days a year in D.C. my whole life because
of being on tour with my father. You
know the Jolly Green Giant on television
wheres hes like walking through elds of
grass? Youre on the tour bus and all of
sudden there are the monuments and so
much green and the White House. Youre
walking through history which is rare for
me in America to feel that way because
everything is so new. The house I grew up
in is over a 100-and-something years old.
I cant tell you one building near me in
L.A. thats over a 100 years old. So to walk
through and see this is where all the stu
I learned in school happened, I love the
history of it. But its also very interesting
that you go one mile in the other direction
and its a completely dierent world.
People are left and forgotten. I was a little
bit shocked about that.
BLADE: They dont show you that on
TV.
OSBOURNE: At all, you dont even
know thats there. They always say that
charity starts at home, why dont they
clean up Washington and look after the
people who live there and then youll be
in a more powerful situation? Its very
confusing. But I dont know why but I
always pretend like Im Jackie O when Im
there. Totally going to do a bouant with
my hair at my book signing for a Jackie O
