On the federal level, the fiscal year (FY) 2017 budget and appropriations
process began with the release of the Administrative budget request in
February. The budget proposed to level funding for the Perkins Basic State
Grant program at $1.118 billion. The Administration also requested an
additional $75 million for Perkins; however, the additional funds will be
awarded through competitive grants supporting job-training programs in
high-demand fields. At the request of the Trump administration, lawmakers
opted to stall important funding decisions at the request of the incoming
administration. At the federal level, it sounds like we need to be vigilant and
stay tuned to these critical and pending discussions.
