Standard Covered
The North Carolina Common Core
State Standards covered for this
week were the same as last week,
because they were finishing up the
unit. These Standards are the
following:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.5

Recognize area as an attribute of

plane figures and understand
concepts of area measurement.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.7

Relate area to the operations of

multiplication and addition.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10

Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a
data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart,
and compare problems1 using information presented in a bar graph.

Intro Activity/ Engage

3

On February 15th, I observed Ms. Danzas third grade class again at Parkside
Elementary School. Today was the last day of their unit working with different forms
of graphs by analyzing/ comparing and contrasting their different elements. To start
the days lesson, Ms. Danza put up her usual Warm-Up question on the projector to
have the students complete. The Warm Up question came directly from an EOG test
and stated, Third graders are asked to choose their favorite sport. How many fewer
students chose soccer than football as their favorite sport? The question also
included a bar graph to show the student data with soccer, tennis, basketball, and
football all represented. The question was multiple choice, and the students were
told to choose the correct answer A-D. After five minutes of the students working
independently on the Warm-Up, Ms. Danza gathered the class back together to
review by prompting the students with questions such as: Who would like to read
the directions?, Were there any numbers that you noticed?, What was the scale
increasing by?, What is the question that we are trying to solve?, When you
looked at the words which words were important?, Which math function are we
using?:, What are the values on the graph?, and What is the equation you used to
solve this problem? As Ms. Danza guided the class through these questions she
provided them with positive and encouraging feedback as well as writing on the
board the important information the class responded with (ex. Important numbers,
keywords, and equations). Also throughout this review of the Warm-Up, Ms. Danza
provided the students with strategies to use when solving this problem such as
drawing their own bar graph or using a straight edge of paper to line up to
accurately measure the graphs data. This ended the introductory activity and
engagement portion of the lesson.

Test

During this observation of Ms. Danzas class she provided the class with a end-of-
unit assessment to measure the student's knowledge on concepts of area and
graphs. Before the test, Ms. Danza reminded the class of the Key Test Reminders.
These reminders included: no talking and to remember to choose and bubble the
same letter. In addition, she told the class that the test was on area and graphs and
that there were no surprises to expect because they had learned all the necessary
information. After providing the class with these reminders, Ms. Danza also gave the
class procedures for what to do when they finish which include: check to make sure
you used cubes and showed your work, bring the test to me, and silently work at the
carpet on the provided science activity. To ensure that students were aware of what
4

to do after the assessment, Ms. Danza told the class the procedures and also wrote
them on the whiteboard, which is an excellent UDL approach during her teaching.

Recap

Although I did not necessarily get to see a math lesson during this experience in Ms.
Danzas classroom I still believe that it was productive and beneficial. During the
warm up, the students were engaged and challenged with a real-world question that
they will have to analyze later on the standardized assessment at the end of the
year. I believe this is beneficial because it allows them to see directly what is
expected of them, while feeling comfortable answering similar questions. I also
enjoyed Ms. Danzas interaction with the students through her informative
assessment of questions and providing students with positive and reinforcing
feedback after the Warm-Up. In addition, her way of providing students with several
different instructions and delivery was very educational for me to see. I think that
she engages her students very well and allows them to explicitly understand what is
expected of them in her class.
