Reflection:

This was not my original intent for a social studies lesson. I unfortunately didnt get to teach a
specific social studies lesson due to the counties schedule and because I had to leave for a funeral in
the middle of IMB. In the future I would teach this lesson more focused on the historical aspects of the
Civil War and the impact that it had on North Carolina specifically. I ended up having to integrate
social studies into my reading and language arts lesson which was fine but I would have liked to have
gone into further detail about the Civil War. I would have also liked more time to complete my lesson.
The time I was allowed to teach my lesson made it so I had to shorten my lesson so I couldnt get to
everything that was in the lesson plan. If I had the time to complete my full lesson I would have
covered some of the suggestions on my feedback form.
I feel like the strengths of this lesson were that I was really passionate about the topic that I
was teaching. I love talking about the Civil War and I love reading about it. I am minoring in childrens
literature so being able to use a piece of literature to teach a subject I loved made me keep the
students motivated in learning. I also feel like I worked the room well and was able to help students
individually when they needed it.
Some of the weaknesses of the lesson come from what I mentioned previously. I did not have
enough time to complete every part of the lesson plan. I also would have liked to talk more about the
Civil War and not just the main idea of the Civil War text.
I learned that sometimes you need to modify and improvise lessons based on what is going on
that day. I learned that students are passionate about learning what you are passionate about
teaching. From this experience I learned that students will come up with different answers but multiple
answers could be correct. All students are different and learn differently so it makes teaching
interesting. I feel that as a teacher you need to constantly need to stay on your toes to modify for your
students needs.
