Lesson Topic: Civil Rights

Education 319 Lesson #2 Reflection

Lesson Objectives and Student Outcomes

My objectives for this lesson were (1) Students will be able to define civil

rights and the importance it played in the United States. (2) Students will be

able to define different civil rights leaders and the contributions they played

in the civil rights movement. Students instantly knew the importance of civil

rights and the important role it played in the United States. By the end of the

lesson students were able to identify civil rights leaders and the

contributions they played. Students were encouraged the pick civil rights

leaders other than Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks.

Design of Lesson and Pedagogy

The lesson is laid out beginning with a KWL chart to access what the

students already know, what they want to know, and at the end of the lesson

I will record what they learned. I created a Prezi as a visual for the students

when discussing civil rights. The most important part of the assignment

where students choosing a civil rights leader to talk about and writing 2-3

paragraphs about that figure and their contributions. I was impressed by

many of the students choices such as Muhammad Ali and others rather than

Martin Luther King jr.

I will begin class with a teacher introduction and explain the

activities we will be completing for the day.
I will start a KWL chart to access students prior knowledge of the
civil rights movement and what students want to know.
I will conduct a presentation using a Prezi to inform the students
about civil rights and describe several civil rights leaders and their
contributions to the civil right movement.
Students will conduct research using their Ipads. Students will
pick a civil rights leader other than Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa
Parks and write 2-3 paragraphs about who they are, what they did,
and what contributions they made to the civil rights movement.
I will place students into groups of 4, each student will have the
opportunity to tell the group which civil rights leader they picked and
the contributions they made.
We will complete the L part of the KWL chart to assess what

students learned from the lesson.

Assessment

I assessed my students through observation and using the KWL chart. At the

end of the lesson as class I had students tell me things they learned about

civil rights as i recorded them in the L column.
