Admin change vexes high school community

Dismissal of a popular Capuchino High
School assistant principal roiled the school
community as parents, students and resi-
dents gathered district administrators to
share their collective outrage.
Those dismayed by the looming departure
of Assistant Principal Joe Hudelson from
his post flooded a PTO meeting Tuesday,
April 18, to give a piece of their mind to
Principal Shamar Shanks and Kevin Skelly,
superintendent of the San Mateo Union
High School District.
Noting his constant presence at extracur-
ricular events as well as responsiveness to
the needs and concerns of parents, many
praised Hudelsons commitment to improv-
ing the school community.
This is hard to take because he was the
heart of the school, said Laura Davis, par-
ent of a former Capuchino High School stu-
dent who remains active in school events.
Much of the admiration heaped on
Hudelson came at the expense of Shanks,
who some said did not show the same dedi-
cation to accessibility, transparency or
communication as her colleague.
Though unable to share the reason for
Hudelsons apparent pending exit at the end
of the school year due to a policy precluding
public comment on personnel matters, offi-
cials strived to assure the crowd their con-
cerns were heard.

expenses have put those providing child care in San Mateo
County in a bind, according to a countywide study.
The Redwood City Planning Commission took a closer
look at the numbers for the city Tuesday, reviewing a report
showing similar issues in meeting the demand for child care
in the city, which is slated to see an increase in the number

Mark Alan Della Maggiora
Mark Alan Della Maggiora, born Jan. 1,
1985, in San Francisco to Alan and Alison
Della Maggiora, died unexpectedly March 5,
2017, at 32 years of age.
He grew up in San
Bruno and San Carlos and
resided in Oakland. He
was the loving and pro-
tective brother to
younger sister Tara Della
Maggiora. He also leaves
behind his maternal
grandmother, Bettylee
Moore of San Bruno and is survived by his
four uncles Gene Della Maggiora, Leo
Moore, Scott Moore (Jane) and David
Moore (Veronica), and several cousins.
Mark was well known and loved for his
passion and creativeness which he exhibit-
ed through his music and art. His great sense
of humor and compassion deeply touched
many in his large community of friends and
family and he will be greatly missed.
Mark also had a love for animals especial-
ly his rescue cats. The family asks that you

announced several fines against four Bay
Area hospitals for failures to properly care
for patients.
The California Department of Public
Health issued six fines totaling hundreds of
thousands of dollars against Napas Queen
of the Valley Medical Center, the Kaiser
Permanente Medical Center in San
Francisco, Sequoia Hospital in Redwood
City and the California Pacific Medical
Centers St. Luke Campus in San Francisco.
Sequoia Hospital was fined $47,452.50
for mistakenly removing a patients ovaries
in 2016 and the California Pacific Medical
Centers St. Luke Campus was fined
$47,452.50 for not properly caring for a
woman who fell and hit her head in the hos-
pital and subsequently died following brain
surgery. Both hospitals submitted plans to
the state intended to help them avoid simi-
lar mistakes in the future.
Queen of the Valley received three fines
more than any other hospital on the list
totaling $225, 000 for cases involving
three different patients who were the vic-
tims of substandard care in 2013.
In one case, a patient came into the hos-
pitals heart monitor, or telemetry, unit
while she was recovering from surgical
repairs to facial fractures.
She had gauze or cotton packed into her
nasal cavity and her jaw was wired shut.
The hospital failed to make sure nursing
staff provided ongoing assessments of
the patients changing condition, including
bleeding down the back of her throat and
trouble breathing, according to a 2015
Public Health report.
The patient eventually suffered a respira-
tory arrest, sustained a brain injury due to
lack of oxygen and she slipped into a per-
sistent vegetative state, according to the
report.
The state fined Queen of the Valley
$100,000 for its lapses in this case.
In another case, for which the hospital
was fined $50,000, the state found that
nursing staff failed to provide continuous
heart and breathing monitoring and breath-
ing assistance for a patient who ultimately
died.
The hospital submitted plans, accepted by
state health officials, that are intended help

Donald Trump blasts Iran as

fulfill the spirit of its nuclear deal
with world powers, President Donald
Trump declared Thursday, setting an
ominous tone for his forthcoming
decision about whether to pull the

struck by Iran, the U.S. and other
world powers in 2015 and said it

Mapping the future of downtown San Mateo
I
f the city of San Mateo is considered
the heart of the Peninsula then down-
town is truly the heartbeat.
It is where the city began and all that
came after developed from there. It is where
the city holds its most history, and for
some, its most promise.
City ofcials are in the midst of its
Downtown Specic Plan Update, which
will provide a template for what downtown
will look like and what is acceptable for
decades to come. I can think of no more
important document for those who care
deeply for the city and its core like I do.
On Monday, city ofcials are holding a
Taste and Talk Forum for the update at
Draper Universitys Hero City at 55 E.
Third Ave. from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The
discussion will center on shifting demo-
graphic, economic and environmental
trends locally and throughout the region. A
recent community workshop on the plan
was held March 29 in which residents
played a game with Legos to show where
they might like to see future development
downtown. There will be further outreach
efforts and those discussions will be folded
into the plan for consideration by planners
and the City Council.
The current downtown plan was adopted
in 2009 and changing factors, including
the dissolution of redevelopment agencies,
the economic recovery and its impacts and
growing concerns about housing afford-
ability, led city staff to revisit the plan
sooner rather than later.
Some of the perceived opportunities are
more density and the redevelopment of two
city-owned sites at Fifth and Railroad
avenues. One buzz term in recent years is
transit-oriented development and there
could be more development activity near

L
ast year, my report to the commu-
nity explained the core services
provided by the San Mateo
County Transit District and the unique
challenges and opportunities that will
shape how we walk, bike, drive and ride
throughout the Peninsula.
The district manages the countys bus
and paratransit service, and contracts
with Caltrain and the San Mateo County
Transportation Authority to manage
regional commuter rail service and to
help fund countywide highway, transit,
shuttle, bike, pedestrian and local road
improvements.
A lot of work has been done in each of
these areas over the last year. Projects
have been completed, new services have
been established, legal challenges have
been overcome and new revenue has been
approved that will increase investment in
the future of transportation in San Mateo
County, and throughout the region.
In 2017, a series of studies and evalua-
tions that were launched over the last year
will help guide this investment with data-
driven solutions to our most pressing
challenges. But more importantly, efforts
are underway to help ensure that adequate
resources will be available to implement
real solutions.

little to ameliorate the trafc congestion in
the city though one could argue it could be
much worse if it werent for public transit
offerings. Housing is a denite need but it
should be put into a larger context of both
the downtowns history and its future.
Though there is a current need, it doesnt
mean it will be as acute as it is now, and
the downtown is too important to be
looked at to solve that issue completely
right now. This document will set the stage
for what downtown will look like in
decades to come and it is important to look
at it for what it is a historic retail,
restaurant and business hub with some
housing that serves both the immediate
neighborhoods but also the entire city and
region.
Having said that, there is some opportu-
nity to add housing where appropriate. The
redevelopment sites at the southeast end of
downtown offer that opportunity since the
city owns the land and below-market rate

Another effort wrapping up this year is
the Dumbarton Corridor Transportation
Study, which will identify a comprehen-
sive set of multimodal strategies that
reduce traffic congestion and improve
transbay mobility options.
Caltrain
Caltrain continues to be the best oppor-
tunity we have to reduce regional conges-
tion, but ridership now exceeds the sys-
tems capacity and current diesel opera-
tions are incapable of accommodating
existing or future demand.
Over $1.3 billion has been secured to
modernize Caltrain and operate electric
trains that will expand capacity and deliv-
er faster, more frequent service to
Peninsula communities. The project is
ready to start construction, and the final
step is approval of a $647 million federal
grant. In January, after a full assessment
of the projects merits, the grant was rec-
ommended for approval, but the new
administration delayed a final decision
while the presidents budget recommenda-
units could be provided. However, some in
the Central Neighborhood have expressed
concern about additional impact so any-
thing developed there should provide
something for them whether it be trafc
calming or perhaps some sort of new com-
munity use incorporated into the new site.
There is also an opportunity right next to
the Caltrain station for housing since it
would be most convenient for train com-
muters. True, but that area is also ripe for
reinvigoration as a city plaza for which
ofcials have long sought. Perhaps there
could be both. The alley separating B
Street businesses and the transit center is
awkward and underutilized now and could be
incorporated into a new plaza along with
the space near La Cumbre, and that busi-
ness could also be incorporated into it
well. The new plaza could also have histor-
ical markers so those unfamiliar with the
citys history could learn more. And one of
the worst kept secrets in San Mateo is that
Trags may soon be redeveloped though
no one is conrming it and that site
also offers an opportunity for housing and
a plaza, or at least contribute to the new
energy of the area. If The Melting Pot were
ever to move, its huge space in the transit
center offers opportunity for a community
use or a true transit-oriented business like a
coffee stand and book store for commuters.
Perhaps our used book store on B Street
might like to take advantage of a new and
larger space at lower rents. And having a
tech business in the train station has
always been a poor use for city-owned
property though such businesses are
important to the areas vigor.
There is opportunity on B Street for
occasional closures for farmers markets
and other community events but it is used
to often by drivers looking for the Main

tions to Congress are developed.
Employers and communities along the
corridor, and policymakers and organiza-
tions around the country, have rallied to
support the project because it is one of
the most critical regional congestion
relief opportunities we have, and because
it is an immediate opportunity to create
10,000 jobs nationwide.
A decision on the federal grant is
expected in mid-May but, regardless of
the outcome, the merits of the project,
the benefits at stake and the momentum
generated over the last few years assures
that Caltrain electrification will happen.
Transportation Authority
In 2017, the Transportation Authority
continues to invest the countys voter-
approved sales tax in multimodal projects
that reduce local and regional congestion
by repairing local roads, rebuilding high-
way interchanges and expanding transit
connections.
In 2016, the authority helped launch
the U.S.-101 Managed Lanes Project,
which will evaluate options to relieve
congestion by reconfiguring lanes and
adding carpool or express lanes to the
corridor.
New funding opportunities
Of course, it is not enough to identify
strategies that address these challenges.
Implementing solutions means commit-
ting resources.

closed, although that would be lovely.
As far as additional parking, whoever
thought of the Central Parking Garage was
brilliant, because it is hardly noticed and
provides lots of spaces. How about adding
another level or two and use the other rede-
velopment sites for more housing and
other community uses such as a more per-
manent worker resource center or other
social services facing away from the near-
by neighborhood? Or if no one likes my
train station plaza idea, perhaps this is the
right spot for a public gathering space.
Also, if one is talking about greater den-
sity, El Camino Real seems to be a no-
brainer since it already has the tallest
buildings. It is also relatively close to the
train station and bus lines. And I know the
Central Park Master Plan is ancillary, but
the park should be left relatively alone. Its
nice as it is but could use some sprucing
up. There has been talk of putting a plaza
where the tennis courts are but the courts
add a bit of life into the night, and that is
nice.
And while there has been some recent
effort put into downtowns cleanliness,
more can be done. After all, you only get
one chance to make a good impression.
You may hate these ideas, or love them,
though Id prefer you love them. Whatever
your thoughts are, now is the time to share

County, this means millions of dollars in
increased formula funds to support our
transit needs.

Plenty has changed for the Menlo
School baseball team from a season ago.
One thing that hasnt changed, though,
is the Knights just keep winning.
After winning its sixth Central Coast
Section championship in program histo-
ry last season with a senior-laden roster,
Menlo emerged as a contender again this
season. The Knights (5-1 in PAL Ocean,
9-8-1 overall) laid claim outright to the
Peninsula Athletic League Ocean
Division lead Tuesday with a 3-1 win over
Half Moon Bay in a battle for first place.
First-year manager Sean Riley said his
Knights, despite the magnitude of the
game, handled the win like any other.
Just a confidence builder, Riley said.
Knowing how hard the kids are going to
work and knowing what kind of team we
have. Theyve been doing a great job
picking each other up.
Menlos starting rotation of senior
right-hander Griff McGarry and Chandler
Yu has proved a prolific one-two punch.
McGarry earned the win against Half
Moon Bay, emerging in Menlos biggest

Woods likely to miss majors this year after surgery

One day after saying his back was pro-
gressing, Tiger Woods had a fourth back sur-
gery to alleviate pain and will go through
another year without playing a major.
The surgery was Wednesday at the Texas
Back Institute.
Woods was in Missouri on Tuesday to
announce plans to design a public golf
course at Big Cedar Lodge, and he even tried
hitting a few shots to a
par 3. The first one rattled
around in the rocks, and
the second shot was about
10 feet from the flag.
Asked about his health
during the ceremony,
Woods said he had good
days and bad days. And
Tiger Woods then he flew to Dallas for
fusion surgery to create
space in his lower back.
The announcement on his website
Thursday said typical recovery from a sin-
gle-level fusion surgery is six months.
The surgery went well, and Im opti-
mistic this will relieve my back spasms and
pain, Woods said. When healed, I look
forward to getting back to a normal life,
playing with my kids, competing in profes-
sional golf and living without the pain I
have been battling so long.
The 41-year-old Woods first had back sur-
gery a microdiscectomy a week before
the 2014 Masters, and he tried to return in
three months. He sat out three months at the
end of 2014 to let his body fully heal.
But after a 2015 season in which he
missed the cut in three majors, he had back
surgery in September and another one in
October.
He went 15 months without competition
before returning in December at his Hero
World Challenge in the Bahamas, where

Iguodala and Livingston have mentored Clark and rook-
ie Patrick McCaw.
They go crazy for Clark, with his retro headband. West
made a key rebound on a miss Wednesday by Clark and
converted a turnaround hook shot. Clark made his next
attempt and has scored in double figures both playoff
games so far noting, I just guess against this team, the
shots falling.
Everybody knows how potent the second unit can be.
I think what happens is you tend to overlook the
importance of Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, David
West, Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau said. Those
guys have been good players in this league for a long,
long time.
Iguodala and Livingston accepted lesser roles with the
addition of Durant but have since been called upon to do
more. Nobodys counting minutes.

Nashville completes sweep of top-seeded Blackhawks

Nashville Predators beat the Chicago
Blackhawks 4-1 on Thursday night to com-
plete a surprising sweep of the Western
Conferences top seed.

secret to Menlos success this season. It was a
tall order for the Knights to return to their win-
ning ways, with the departure of former man-
ager Ryan Cavan and 12 graduated seniors.
McGarry and Yu are both college-bound
players. McGarry is the second member of his
family to go the Division I route, having
signed to pitch at University of Virginia. His
older brother Matt, out of Menlo-Atherton,
currently pitches at Vanderbilt. Yu, mean-
while, is committed to play for the Division
III program at University of Chicago.
Riley said both pitchers season have been
characterized by dominance.
You just get used to them getting guys up
and putting them down, Riley said.
Then theres the motivational presence of
Riley. A former assistant coach at Serra in

moments after Tse and Zhao scored the title-
clinching win. With the Dons commanding
big third-set leads on both courts though,
there was not a lot of distraction for the
focused Dons.
Both of the wins were really close, Zhao
said. So, I just tried to keep my cool and keep
my focus on playing that set.
While the Dons didnt show any emotion
upon clinching the match, it was still a
moment to revel in, according to Tse.
It was actually a big moment for me, Tse
said. I havent been consistent this year.
Today was my best game of the season. So I
was proud of my performance. I was proud of

ing a highly-publicized family tragedy when
his son Calvin was fatally shot near
Fishermans Wharf on Aug. 7, 2016. The
tragedy didnt stop Riley from being an inte-
gral and uplifting figure on the sidelines
throughout much of Serra footballs Northern
California championship season. And now,
he has brought the same uplifting force day-in
and day-out for his Knights.
One of his key terms for us is grateful-
ness, McGarry said. We always take that
into account. And it really puts our life into
perspective. Were grateful for the things we
have.
Menlo got off to a rough start this season,
posting a 2-4-1 record through its first seven
games, including a four-game losing streak,
including non-league losses to powerhouses
Palo Alto and Soquel. Through six league
games, however, Menlo has suffered just one
both of us.
Aragons triumph on the No. 4 singles court
set the stage for the big finish at doubles.
With Wu moving to No. 1 doubles, Aragon
turned to Jordan Chall at No. 4 singles. Chall
has platooned with Wu at No. 4 this year, but
Wu would have gotten the call had Aragon
been playing with its full roster.
Chall scored a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over
Carlmonts Ben Barde. In the early going of
the decisive third set, though, Barde jumped
out to a 2-1 lead after breaking Challs serve.
Actually, Chall essentially broke his own
serve, double faulting three times. But Chall
rallied back to win three straight games before
putting it away to put Aragon up 3-2 on the
day.
[Challs] biggest opponent is himself,
Owdom said. His biggest issue is mental
toughness and today he had it. It was a clutch
win.
Watching the loss was a helpless feeling for
Carlmonts top two singles players, Thomas
Nashville will face the winner of the St.
Louis-Minnesota series in the second
round. The Blues have a 3-1 lead heading
into Game 5 on Saturday in Minnesota.
Chicago became the first No. 1 seed to
lose in the opening round since the Los
Angeles Kings knocked off the Vancouver
Canucks on their way to the Stanley Cup
loss, falling 6-3 to South City April 4. The
Knights bounced back two days later to wal-
lop the Warriors, 16-2.
We did play some tough games, McGarry
said. I think the main thing was there was a
lot of new players on the varsity team. Last
year we were predominantly seniors and we
had a lot of leaders on that team. We have a lot
of new starters this year. So I think it took a
few games for everyone to bond and to get on
the same page.
Riley describes this years Menlo squad as a
small-ball team. That was evident in Tuesdays
win as the Knights produced single runs in the
first, second and sixth. In the first inning,
Menlo got on the board on a sacrifice fly from
Justin Nam. In the second, Justin Kasser drew
a bases-loaded walk. In the sixth, the Knights
scored an unearned insurance run on an RBI
single from Kasser.
Now in the drivers seat of the Ocean
Division the Knights lead second-place
Half Moon Bay by a half game with five to
play Riley said the confidence in the Menlo
dugout is palpable.
Were expecting to win every game now,
Riley said. We have a lot of confidence going
now.
Reznik and Milad Shafaie. Both made quick
work of their opponents, with their matches
being the first two completed. Reznik defeated
Aragons Daniel Li 6-1, 6-1; and Shafaie
defeated Rithik Booreddy 6-3, 6-2.
Both Reznik and Shafaie were invested in
the team outcome even before their matches
ended. Shafaie demonstrated this at match
point, ripping a forehand from the backline
and, before it even landed on the other side to
wrap up his win, Shafaie was already yelling:
Lets go Scots! Rally! Lets go!
The first set I was focused on my match,
Reznik said. But by the second set, I was
more focused on the matches next to mine to
try and pump them up.
Carlmont defeated Aragon twice during the
regular season, first by a score of 4-3, then 5-
2 in the second round. In the opening round of
the PAL tournament Wednesday, the Scots
defeated PAL Ocean Division champion
Capuchino 7-0, while Aragon defeated
Burlingame 5-2.

Game 4 dominated the first 10 minutes,
energized by the deafening roar of the

Edmonton took a 1-0 lead at 5:28 when
Maroon, standing at the edge of the crease,
corralled a rebound off Matt Bennings shot
to sweep the puck past Sharks goalie
Martin Jones.
The Oilers also hit three goal posts
two by Darnell Nurse and one by Jordan
Eberle before San Jose responded at the
midway point of the period.
Marcus Sorensen slap-passed the puck
from the blue line to Chris Tierney, who
then redirected the puck through the top of
the crease to Boedker. He then wristed the
puck into an open net.
The Sharks made it 2-1 with just over four
minutes to go in the period. Taking advan-
tage of a bad Oilers line change, Joe
Thornton and Marleau broke in over the
blue line on a two-on-one. Thorntons wrist
shot leaked through Oilers goalie Cam
Talbot and dribbled to the goal line, where
Marleau stuffed it in. The Sharks increased
their lead to 3-1 just under nine minutes into
the second period. A wrist shot by
Schlemko from the blue line fluttered its
way through a crowd in the crease and over
Talbots right shoulder.
The Oilers cut the lead to 3-2 on the power
play with less than two minutes left in the
second period, with Brent Burns in the
penalty box for delay of game.
Draisaitl backhanded the puck through a
clutch of bodies in the slot to Letestu for a
one-timer under the crossbar.
The Sharks smothered the Oilers attack
for most of the third period until Klefbom
blasted a shot from the blue line to tie the

The Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the Coast Golden
Gate Conference title with the win over the Dons.
Anders Green and Nick Adgar both went deep for CSM (15-
1 conference, 30-5 overall) to highlight the Bulldogs 12-
hit attack. Adgar was 3 for 4 on the day with three RBIs,
while Green drove in a pair as he, too, had three hits in four
plate appearances.
CSM wasted little time jumping on De Anza starting
pitcher Kevin Hahn, a 2014 graduate of Aragon. The
Bulldogs scored two runs in the first and one more in the
second as Hahn lasted just three innings. The Bulldogs
added two more in both the fifth and seventh innings before
blowing the game open with a four-run top of the ninth.
That was more than enough offense for CSM starter Drew
Reveno, who worked seven innings, giving up just three
hits.
De Anza second baseman Nolan Dempsey, a 2014 Serra

NFL team docs booed DEA official at 2011 presentation

A top drug-enforcement official invited
by the NFL in 2011 to educate team physi-
cians and staff about medicating players in
compliance with federal laws was met with
skepticism, catcalls and even occasional
boos from the doctors gathered, according
to a published report.
And the funny thing was, I was there to
help them. I wasnt looking to take action
against anybody, Joseph T. Rannazzisi,
who headed up the Drug Enforcement
Administrations Office of Diversion
Control at the time, recalled in a recent
interview with the Washington Post.
I wanted them to understand if they were
doing what I think they were doing if
they were just handing out drugs to players
they werent doing the players a service
as patients, he added.
The presentation, given in a downtown
Indianapolis hotel ballroom, was titled
NFL Physicians Briefing: Obligations and
Responsibilities under
the Controlled
Substances Act and Code
of Federal Regulations.
Many of the issues

investigation into how

drugs and other powerful
painkillers to their players.
Some of those issues were also raised in a
lawsuit originally filed by former players
against the league in 2014. That complaint
has since been amended and now includes
more than 1,800 former players as plain-
tiffs. They allege NFL team doctors and med-
ical staffs distributed those drugs without
regard for players safety or long-term
health and sometimes in violation of fed-
eral laws covering the storage, handling,
transport and record-keeping required.
The NFL has repeatedly denied those alle-
gations and did so again in a letter
Wednesday to the House Energy and
Commerce Committee, which is looking
into claims contained in the players law-
suit.
Our 32 clubs and their medical staffs con-
tinue to put the health and safety of players
first, ensuring that all NFL players receive
the highest quality medical care, said the
letter, signed by Dennis Curran, the leagues
general counsel.
The Washington Post acknowledges that
its reporting was based solely on allega-
tions made by the plaintiffs in the club liti-
gation. It is, therefore, not surprising that
the article does not accurately describe the
scope and quality of medical care provided
to players by team doctors and athletic
trainers; nor does it accurately describe doc-
uments or testimony from the litigation.
Rannazzisi and several team physicians
who were present but not identified in the
Post account, said the 2011 meeting was
contentious from the outset. Doctors were
angered to be told, among other things, that
federal laws barred them from traveling to
road games across state lines with prescrip-
tion-strength drugs, something theyd been
doing for years.
One doctor upset about the travel restric-
tion asked Rannazzisi why the president
was allowed to travel with drugs aboard Air
Force One. The DEA official explained that
statutes grant exemptions for military air-
craft.
Im thinking as Im saying this, This is
surreal, Rannazzisi recalled. So he says,
The military is exempt? Well, think of our
players as warriors every Sunday on the
field of battle. I was stunned.
Apparently, so were the doctors.
He was treating everyone like a crimi-
nal, said one.
He was lumping all of the NFL doctors
with the pain factory doctors, a second
team doctor told the newspaper. ... The
whole thing went over like a lead balloon.

But then he missed the cut at Torrey Pines in January, and
he withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic on Feb. 3 after
opening with a 77, citing back spasms.
And now hes gone through a fourth surgery.
You see him in the Bahamas, and he looked pretty good,
said Mark Steinberg, his agent at Excel Sports
Management. And then you see him in Dubai. It can happen
any time. You heard him say two days ago, I have good days
and bad days. This surgery, we hope, eliminates the bad
days.
Questions about the 14-time major champion have shifted
from if he will win another major to if he will play another
major.
The statement on his website said Woods bottom disc in
his lower back has severely narrowed, causing sciatica and
severe pain in his back and legs. Woods opted for a fourth
surgery when more conservative therapy, such as rest and
injections, failed to solve anything.
He had consulted with a number of top people that had
recommended this was the way to go if he wanted a clear and
final path, Steinberg said. Everything he had done in the
past was a temporary fix, so to speak. At that point, they
thought there were other alternatives than fusion.
Steinberg said they were advised fusion surgery was the
best option if Woods wanted an active lifestyle and was will-
ing to sit out the rest of the season.
He should be better than hes been in the past five years,
Steinberg said. Hes pretty encouraged.
The surgery was described as anterior lumbar interbody
fusion at the L-5 and S-1 of his spine. It was performed by
Richard Guyer of the institutes Center for Disc
Replacement, and involved removing the damaged disc and
lifting the collapsed disc space to normal levels.
After he recovers from surgery, he will gradually begin
his rehabilitation until he is completely healed, Guyer said
on the website. Once thats accomplished, his workouts
will be geared to allowing him to return to competitive
golf.
Guyer said the bottom of the spine is the best place for
single-level fusion to occur.
Woods first surgery in 2014 was in Park City, Utah, by
neurosurgeon Charles Rich, who also did the second opera-
tion. This is the first time Woods has gone to the Texas Back
Institute.
Woods was to begin therapy and treatment after several
weeks of rest.
He won his 79th PGA Tour event in August 2013 at the
Bridgestone Invitational. Three weeks later, he was in con-
tention late in the final round at the Barclays when he
dropped to his knees after experiencing what he described as
back spasms.
Woods is exempt for life at the Masters and PGA
Championship, and until he is 60 at the British Open. He
has a 10-year exemption for the U.S. Open from his 2008
victory at Torrey Pines, which was his 14th and last major.
He had reconstructive knee surgery a week later.
He has started just 19 events worldwide since that first
back surgery, and he has completed 72 holes in just nine of
them. His best finish was a tie for 10th in the Wyndham
Championship in August 2015, a month before his second
back surgery.
With so many injuries and inactivity, Woods now is No.
788 in the world ranking.

Free Fire
misses mark

The shootout, often a ballet, is a battle royale in Ben
Wheatleys Free Fire.
When the bullets start flying, Wheatleys arms-deal-
gone-wrong 1970s shoot-up comes to a crawl. Theres a
total absence of slow-motion cartwheels. No one
miraculously walks through a wall of fire to kill
the bad guys with three precise shots. Not a single
Scarlett Johansson roundhouse kick is in the
house.
Instead, people get maimed, bloodied and dead.
Theres no subsequent chase or flight from the
police, just bickering and trench warfare ... for the
majority of the 90 minute film. The movie is 100
percent O.K. Corral.
Its a formally impressive feat set nearly
entirely in the same rundown warehouse but a
thin and tedious one.
The film, the British directors sixth, spends
its first third gathering an ensemble of retro-out-
fitted characters under the glistening wet of a
dark Massachusetts night. The setting and col-
orful, comic banter would fit into a George V.
Higgins novel, or Peter Yates 1973 adaptation
of Friends of Eddie Coyle.
Its an international, much-mustachioed
array of characters. A handful of Irish Republican Army
agents (Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley) are meeting
gun sellers (Sharlto Copleys South African; Babou
Ceesays former Black Panther). The deal has been
brokered by a pair of savvy Americans (Brie
Larsons Justine, Armie Hammers turtle-necked
Ord) and then there are a couple locals, Stevo
(Sam Riley) and Bernie (Enzo Cilenti) brought
in to carry the crates of assault weapons.
The latter two, sort of the Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern of the bunch, play a minor
role in the meet-up but a pivotal one in
its descent into orgiastic violence.
Stevo, with a bruised face from the
previous nights exploits, ends up
face-to-face with the man he tussled
with and, well, all hell breaks loose.
All of them, while of various degrees
of level-headedness, are self-consciously
playing a role as street toughs. Best is
Copleys arch Verne, a self-described rare
and mysterious jewel, most concerned with
the stitching of his new suit. But once every-
one takes cover throughout the abandoned facto-
ry and sporadically exchange fire in between
snatches of ironic conversations, telling whos on
which side becomes impossible for us and for them.

Delicioso postage stamps dedicated to Latino cuisine

ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. From the
kitchen table to the mail, the U.S. Postal
Service on Thursday recognized the influ-
ence of Latino foods and flavors on
American cuisine with the release of a new
series of stamps.
The dedication ceremony for the
Delicioso Forever Stamps was being held at
the National Hispanic Cultural Center in
Albuquerque.
The stamps feature bright illustrations of
tamales, flan, empanadas, chile rellenos,
ceviche and the traditional soup sancocho.
Award-winning illustrator John Parra,
known for his Latino-themed childrens
books, said in an interview that it was an
honor to work on the project. For him, each
stamp brings back memories of the meals
shared with family while growing up in
California.
Parras father is Mexican and his aunts
were known for their cooking, particularly
tamales. And Parra was never one to turn
is. Everybody loves the food, Parra said,
before sitting down at one of Albuquerques
popular New Mexican restaurants for a
green-chile infused lunch.
Its such a universal food for everybody
now, he said. And its a great way to con-
nect with people. Food is such a universal
language.
The Postal Service approached Parra
about two years ago with the idea of focus-
ing on popular dishes from Mexico, Central
and South America and the Caribbean. The
list was eventually whittled down to six that
would translate well to the limited real
estate of a postage stamp.
Parra called them tiny works of art, say-
ing he was thrilled to have the chance to
design a stamp.

Toss veggies in hummus, roast
them and enjoy a tasty crust

I remember being told in marketing
class back in graduate school that the
fastest growing food category in
America was hummus. Hummus, our
professor insisted to us disbelieving
students, would soon be ubiquitous. I
should have heeded his advice and
leveraged that bit of 1991 foresight in
some way.
Chances are that if you have been to
any kind of gathering lately, you have
partaken in a hummus and veggie plat-
ter. Stores are filled with endless vari-
eties of premade hummus, and home-
made recipes flood the internet. With
protein and fiber-filled garbanzo beans
leading the ingredient list, its a fill-
ing dip that turns baby carrots and bell
pepper slices into a worthy snack that
will actually fill you up a bit. Both
kids and adults seem to like hummus,
so it is equally comfortable at a cock-
tail hour as it is at a kids soccer field.
The problem is: You always have
leftovers. At least we do. Usually, I
serve a couple of varieties, along with
a triple-sized stock of veggies,
because you never really know if the
crowd skews more broccoli than car-
rots, so having veg backup seems
wise.
After one of those occasions, I had
the idea to toss the leftover veggies
into the hummus and roast them. The
hummus clung to the veggies just

enough to give it a caramelized and
tasty crust, and with one recipe, two
leftovers were used up to create a whole
new side dish or appetizer: Hummus-
crusted roasted vegetables.
The key is to roast at high heat, and
to preheat the baking sheet, which
will accelerate the caramelization of
the veggies. Usually, I just toss the
vegetables with the hummus in a large
bowl with my hands. But, Ive also
thinned out hummus with a few table-
spoons of lemon juice or water to make
a batter to coat the veggies more com-
pletely, like a hummus tempura. Either
way works.
Flavored hummus, like roasted garlic
or red pepper, doesnt usually need a
boost, but feel free to stir in extra gar-
lic, herbs or spices (a spoonful of
pesto is delish). Even plain hummus
works great, and takes about a minute
to put together. After baking, sprinkle
on a pinch of salt and squeeze of
lemon, and your hummus-crudite plat-
ter will have found new life.
HUMMUS-CRUSTED
ROASTED VEGGIES
Start to finish: 30 minutes
Servings: 6 servings
1 cup baby carrots
1 cup broccoli florets
1 cup cauliflower florets
1 cup bell pepper slices (red or yel-
low preferred)
1 small onion or fennel bulb, peeled
and quartered
1 cup prepared hummus
Garlic or spices, if desired (optional)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Lemons for squeezing
Line a large baking sheet with parch-
ment paper and place inside the oven.
Preheat the oven to 425 F, with the
sheet pan in the oven. In a large bowl,
toss the vegetables with the hummus,
(and any optional garlic or spices if
using), using your hands to coat the
veggies. Do not worry if the mixture is
a little clumpy or uneven. Once the
oven is hot, remove the sheet pan, and
carefully lay out the coated vegetables
on the tray. Return to the oven and
roast for 10 minutes. Remove the veg-
etables from the oven, and quickly turn
the vegetables over. Return the veg-
etables to the oven and roast until
desired tenderness, about 10-15 more
minutes. Remove from heat, sprinkle
with salt and lemon juice, and serve.
Chefs note: Feel free to swap out
vegetables for 4-5 cups of your
favorites a great way to use up hum-
mus-crudite platter leftovers! Another
version: stir enough lemon juice or
water just until the hummus is smooth
and creamy, like a thick batter, before
tossing in the vegetables.

NEW YORK As a vampire slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar
learned the value of an old-fashioned wooden stake. As a
mom of two children, shes still pretty
handy with a good stick only this
time its in the kitchen.
Gellar skewers all kinds of things in
her new cookbook, Stirring Up Fun
with Food , making appetizing-look-
ing chicken fingers, fondues, fruit
slices, sliders, cake pops and even a
Caesar salad.
The former star of Buffy the Vampire
Sarah Slayer also embraces muffin tins, cook-
Michelle Gellar ie cutters, jars and some nifty knife work
all part of her effort to get kids to eat their veggies and
try new flavors.
We eat with our eyes first and a lot of decisions are made
just by looking at something, she said. A child, an adult,
anyone, looks at asparagus and says, I dont want to eat
that. Im going to go and eat a cupcake. So how do you
make things more visibly appealing?
Gellar and co-author Gia Russo think they have the
answer with something called food crafting, which elevates
a dishs appeal by using clever presentation. Think of bor-
ing old meat loaf as a cute muffin.
In their book, mashed potatoes are put in shot glasses,
bat-shaped mozzarella is baked for Halloween and chili is
spooned into mason jars. Those weird asparagus are baked
in panko crumbs.
One clever way Gellar gets fruit or vegetables into her
kids stomach is by using cookie cutters to cut letters out of
cucumbers or watermelon, assembling words and then send-
ing her kids to school with edible notes (I Love You or
Great Job!).
Let me tell you how fast those vegetables go, Gellar
said.
She also substitutes roasted, Parmesan-flavored cauli-
flower for popcorn for snacking in front of the TV. Youre
getting that same sensation, that same satisfaction, right,
but youre getting a nutritional value at the same time.
Gellar, who with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., have two
children, Charlotte, 7, and Rocky, 4, is passionate about
food and nutrition, urging kids to learn about different
foods early and help in the kitchen.
Cooking, she said, teaches gross motor skills, math, sci-
ence and vocabulary. More than that: Its about time spent
together. People will say, My child is too young. Youre
never too young. My daughter will say to my son, OK, we
need three cups. Which one is the three, Rocky? He just
points to the three.
Karen Murgolo, who worked on the book as editorial
director of the Grand Central Life & Style imprint, said she
was impressed by Gellars creativity and concern for por-
tion control, nutrition and creating food for people on the
go. Its great for parents of kids anywhere from 1 1/2 to
17, but I think 80 percent of the recipes could be served at
any dinner party, honestly.
Gellars interest in better ingredients and sustainable
food policies has led her and Russo to start their own busi-
ness, Foodstirs, a non-GMO line of baking mixes free of
artificial preservatives, flavors and colors thats ethically
sourced.

of change in supermarket baking mix boxes, which often
have salt as the second ingredient or add red dye in a yellow
cake mix.
Theres been so much attention on the perimeter of the
grocery store juices and cleanses and fruits and vegetables.
Then you go into the interior and its kind of really antiquat-
ed. I thought, This is wrong, she said.
With her business, Gellar joins other actresses like
Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani and Jessica Alba who have
shown a strong entrepreneurial drive after establishing them-
selves.
I think that theres a safety net that we have because weve
achieved so much. Ive achieved more than I ever thought I
would achieve. So everything else becomes gravy and I think
it makes you braver, said Gellar, who lives in Los Angeles.
It makes you not rely so much on the negative comments.
It makes you really sort of feel like, You know what? Im
going to try it and if it doesnt work out, thats OK because
Im happy with everything Ive done.
One thing she wont do is help reboot her old Buffy role,
saying fans of the Joss Whedon-created show will be upset
whether she backs it or not. She called it a no-win situa-
tion.
I think that the show lives on in graphic novels, in fan
fiction. And it lives on because people are still discovering it
and still watching it, which means theyre happy with it. If it
aint broke, Im not going to be the one to offer to fix it.

might want to be near their children during

While Commissioner Shawn White said
he has three young children, with one cur-
rently in child care, he hadnt realized the
urgency of the shortage in Redwood City.
I did not realize just how big of an issue
this is, he said. Starting to put some real
data behind it, I think, was really powerful.

of 256 spaces.
Anderson said the focus in finding space
where child care facilities could be built or
expanded had been on schools or faith-
based organizations, many of which own
their spaces and can allow child care
providers to operate at a low lease rates and
during the weekdays. But since those
spaces have filled up, providers have had to
test the real estate market, encountering
steep rents or high costs in building new
locations.
Brions report, which is expected to go
before the City Council later this year, esti-
mated an average cost of $40,717 for each
allowed a woman to run for president and
routinely rejects political dissidents and
others calling for dramatic reform.
Other presidential candidates who made
the cut, according to an Interior Ministry
statement carried by state TV, include mod-
erate Senior Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri,
former conservative culture minister
Mostafa Mirsalim, and former pro-reform
vice president Mostafa Hashemitaba.

Not just a Redwood City problem

thoughts about expanding the services
offered at her school have stalled because of
the red tape and high fees involved. She
expects demand for spots at her school,
which currently serves children ages 2 to 6,
to remain high as she has received interest
from parents from a growing radius around
the school, from San Carlos to Mountain
View.
This is not just a Redwood City prob-
lem, she said. The child care shortage is
huge.
Crawford urged commissioners to advo-
cate for child care opportunities in neigh-
borhoods where they may face opposition,
one barrier for expansion that Brions
study mentioned. Brion also noted the cap-
ital and time needed to apply for operation
permits has deterred providers who might
consider opening a facility.

child care providers as they expand their
services, given the need for trained
providers and safe facilities.
You could say that trying to remove the
red tape, but then you have to be careful
with that because you are caring for chil-
dren, he said.
Commissioner Rick Hunter expressed
interest in loosening zoning requirements
for child care providers, especially those
who could offer services in their homes.
Jean-Marie Houston, director of early
learning support services at the San Mateo
County Office of Education, said she was
optimistic the city would move forward in
expanding child care services given the
increased attention the issue has received.
She said that staying open to a variety of
solutions and partnerships would be the
keys to meeting the child care demand.
It does take a lot of bullets to address
this, she said. Its a forgotten part of what
makes communities thrive.
