NDT(nondestructivetesting)instrument.Itissuitableforanumberofapplications,

TheOmniScancanholduptotwolithiumionbatteries,butonlyneedsonetobe
operational.Iftwobatteriesarepresent,theOmniScanwilloperatefromtheleast
chargedbattery,bydefault,anditwillautomaticallyswitchtothesecondbatteryonce
theremainingchargeofthefirstbatteryisatlessthan 5 %.

Lithiumionbatteriescanberemovedandinstalledwithoutshuttingdownthe
OmniScan,aslongasthereisanothervalidpowersource(DCpoweradapteror
secondbattery).

TheOmniScanalsoincludesalithiumcoinbatterythatdononeedtoberemovedor
replacedbyusers.Thecoinbatterykeepstheinstrumentclockandmasterboard
configurationrunning.

3.2.2 Battery Status Indicators


Thebatterystatusindicators,locatedontheupperleftcornerofthedisplayscreen,
indicatetheamountofpowerleftineachbatteryinoneofthetwofollowingways(see
Figure31onpage 19).

Theremainingoperationaltimeisdisplayedinsidethebatterystatusindicator.
TheOmniScanrequiresaround15 minutesofoperationbeforeaccurately
displayingthisinformation.
Thechargeindicator(bar)insidethebatterystatusindicatorrepresentsan

shutsdownoruntilyougetalowbatterywarning,beforerecharging.Donot
leavethebatterydormantforlongperiodsoftime.OlympusNDTrecommends
usingthebatteryatleastonceeverytwoorthreeweeks.Ifabatteryhasnotbeen
usedforalongperiodoftime,performtheNewbatteryprocedureon
page 22.
IfyoudonotplantousetheOmniScanonbatterypowerforafewweeksor
longer,chargethebatteriesbetween40 %and80 %capacity(3or4 barsonthe
batterychargeindicator),andthenremoveandstoretheminadry,cool,and
cleanplace.

Note:Evenintheoffposition,theOmniScanalwaysusesalittlebitof
powerfromthebatterywhenitisnotpluggedin,andcouldcompletely
dischargebatteriesafterabout15 days.

2. Aslithiumionbatteriesselfdischargeovertime,remembertocheckthe
remainingchargeofstoredbatterieseverymonthorsotomakesuretheydohave
40 %to80 %remainingcapacity,andrechargethosethatdonot.Failuretodoso
mayrenderabatterypermanentlyunusableifitfallsbelowacriticallevel(less
than1 %).
3. Afterastorageperiod,itispreferabletofullyrechargebatteriesbeforeuse.

New-battery procedure
1. Whenyoureceiveanewrechargeablebattery,useitintheOmniScan4to
8 timeswhileassuringthatyoucompletelydischargeandthenrechargethisnew
batteryeachtime.Itwillthenreachmaximumcapacity,andyouwillget
maximumruntime.
2. Itisgoodpracticetocompletelydischargeandthenrechargethebatteryafter
10 to 15 normaluses(oraftertwotothreeweeks)todrainthebattery,inorderto
maintainagoodruntimeandmaximizebatterylife.
3. GoingfromexternalDCpowertobatterypowerandviceversa,frequently,may
resultinashorterbatterylifeascharge/dischargecyclesarelimited(about
300 cyclesorso).Notethat,forthebattery,evenapartialdischargeandrecharge
accountsforonecycle.

4. Inordertomaximizethelifeexpectancyofthebattery,runtheOmniScanunder
thebatterypoweruntilitshutsdownoruntilyougetalowbatterywarning
beforerecharging.RechargethebatterywiththeOmniScan(intheoffpositionto
getshorterrechargetime)orwiththeexternalcharger,ifprovided.

3.2.6 Used-Battery Disposal


Althoughlithiumionbatteriesdonotcontainanyenvironmentallyhazardous
components,suchasleadorcadmium,thebatteriesshouldbedisposedofaccording
tolocalregulations.Batteriesshouldbedisposedofinadischargedstatetoavoid
heat,andifapplicableinaccordancewiththeEuropeanDirectiveonWasteElectrical
andElectronicEquipment(WEEE).RefertoyourlocalOlympusdistributorforreturn
and/orcollectionsystemsavailableinyourcountry.

3.2.7 Warnings on Battery Use


Carefullyreadandobservethefollowingwarningsonbatteryuse.

WARNINGS

1. Donotstorebatteriesthathavelessthan40 %ofthechargeremaining.
Rechargebatteriestobetween40 %and80 %capacitybeforestoringthem.

2. Donotshortcircuitthebatteryterminals.Ashortcircuitmaycausesevere
damagetoabatteryandmakeitunusable.

3. Donotdrop,hit,orotherwiseabuseabattery,asthismayresultinthe
exposureofthecellcontents,whicharecorrosiveandmayexplode.

4. Donotexposeabatterytomoistureorrain;doingsomaycauseanelectric
shock.

5. Donotincineratebatteries.Keepbatteriesawayfromfireorothersources
ofextremeheat.Exposureofbatteriestoextremeheatmayresultinan
explosion.

6. Donotrechargeabatteryifnoindicatorslightupwhenthecapacitycheck
buttononthebatteryisdepressed,asthismaybedangerous.

3.3 Peripheral Connection

Olympus NDTrecommendsshuttingdowntheOmniScanbeforeinstallinga
peripheral,unlessitisaUSBperipheral,inwhichcaseashutdownisnotnecessary.

IMPORTANT
TheOmniScan MXhasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywiththeradio
frequencylimitsforanindustrialdeviceinaccordancewiththespecificationsof
theEMCdirective.TomaintainOmniScancompliancewiththeemissions
specificationsoftheEMCdirective,youmustrespectthefollowingconditions:

Allcablesusedforconnectingtheequipmentmusthaveanoverall
shieldingtoensureelectromagneticcompatibilityandoptimal
performance.

filter.
Attachtheferriteclampfiltersascloselyaspossibletothecableends.
Theferriteclampfiltersarenoteffectiveunlesstheyareimmediately
adjacenttothecableendconnectedtotheOmniScan.
Usetheferriteclampfiltercorrespondingtothecablediameter.Thefilter
mustnotslipeasilynorbehardtocliponthecable.

InstallationoftheOmniScansoftwareisdesignedtobeastroublefreeaspossible.
ThesoftwareiscontainedonaCompactFlashcard.

Ifyouareusingmultipletechnologies(conventionalultrasonics,phasedarrays,
conventionaleddycurrenttesting,eddycurrentarrays),itispossibletoobtaina
singleCompactFlashcardthatcontainsallsoftwareprograms.

Whileupgradingfromoneversiontoanother,amessageappearsonthescreen
notifyingyouthattheupgradeisoccurring;however,noactiononyourpartis
necessary.

RefertotheOlympus NDTWebsiteforsoftwareupdatesandtherelatedprocedures
tofollow.

CAUTION
Forapplicationversionspreviousto1.7,theOmniScansoftwareupdate
overwritestheUserfolder.Youmustfollowthesoftwareinstallationprocedure
relatingtoyoursoftwareversionbeforeproceedingwiththesoftwareupdate.

4. Maintenance

Thischapterdealswiththebasicmaintenancethatanoperatorshouldperformonthe
OmniScan MXunit.Themaintenanceoperationsexplainedbelowallowyoutokeep
yourinstrumentingoodphysicalandworkingcondition.Duetoitsdesign,the
OmniScanrequiresonlyaminimumofmaintenance.Thechaptercoverspreventative
maintenanceandinstrumentcleaning.

4.1 Preventative Maintenance

AstheOmniScandoesnothavemanymovingparts,itdoesnotrequiremuch
preventativemaintenance.ToensurethattheOmniScanfunctionscorrectly,onlya
regularinspectionoftheinstrumentisrecommended.

4.2 Instrument Cleaning

TheOmniScanexternalsurfaces(thatis,thecasing,theacquisitionmodule,andthe
LCDscreenprotector)maybecleanedwhenneeded.Thissectionprovidesthe
procedurefortheappropriatecleaningoftheinstrument.

4.2.1 Casing and Acquisition Module Cleaning

To clean the casing and the acquisition module


1. Makesuretheinstrumentisturnedoff,thatthepowercordisdisconnected,and
thatthebatterieshavebeenpulledout.
2. Disconnectallcablesandconnectorsandmakesurethatallexternalportsonthe
OmniScanhavebeencoveredwiththeirrubberprotectors.

5. Togetridofpersistentstains,useadampclothwithasoftsoapysolution.Donot
useabrasiveproductsorpowerfulsolventsthatmightdamagethefinish.
6. Whenremovingtheconnectorprotectors,makesuretheconnectorsaredry
beforeconnectinganything.Iftheyarenotdry,drythemusingadryclothorwait
untiltheydryontheirown.

4.2.2 LCD Screen Protector Cleaning


Neveruseabrasiveproductsorpowerfulsolventstocleanthescreenofthe
OmniScan.Tocleanthescreen,useadampclothwithacarwindshieldwasherfluid.
Ifyoudonothaveawindshieldwasherfluid,youmayuseacommonglasscleaner
thatcompletelyevaporates.Ifnecessary,clearoffpapertowelresidueusingasoft
bristlebrush.

Chargethebatteriesbyusinganexternalcharger.Batterieschargemuchmore
quicklywhentheOmniScanisnotinuse.However,onthecontrary,thebatteries
willchargeveryslowly,ifatall,ifthepowerconsumptionistoogreat.
ShutdowntheOmniScanandwaitforittocool.Theinternalchargerisequipped
withatemperaturemonitorwhichpreventstherechargeofbatterieswhenthe
internaltemperatureistoohigh.

5.4 Battery Life Problems

Thebatteriesnolongerlastaslongastheyusedto.

Possible solutions
Drainthebatteriescompletelybeforerechargingthem.Thiswillextendthe
lifespanofyourbatteries.
Reconditionthebatteriesusinganexternalbatterychargeronceamonth.Though
thelithiumionbatteriesdonotsufferfromthememoryeffectcommonly
affectingotherbatterytypes,youshouldreconditionthemforoptimumefficiency
(fordetails,seeMaximizingthePerformanceofLithiumIonBatterieson
page 21).
Verifyyourcurrentconfiguration.Theremaybeanoptionoracombinationof
optionsthatisdrainingthebatteriestooquickly.Suchoptionsincludethe
backlight,thevoltagelevel,theacquisitionrate,etc.

5.5 Memory Card Problems

Thereareproblemswhenreadingafilefromthememorycardorwritingafiletothe
memorycard.

Possible solutions
Checktomakesurethatthememorycardwasinsertedcorrectlyintoitsslot.

CAUTION
ThememorycardslotoftheOmniScancanbedamagedifyouforcethe
insertionofamemorycardthewrongway.

IfthememorycardwasremovedwhiletheOmniScanwasactive,especiallyif
datawasbeingreadorwritten,datacorruptionmayhaveoccurred.

Checkyourmemorycardtomakesurethatitiscorrectlyformatted.Inmost
cases,anewlyboughtcardisnotformatted.YouneedaPCandaCompactFlash

format.
Makesureyourdataisnotcorrupted.Severalfactorscancausedatacorruption.
Themostcommonfactorsaredatafileswithunfinishedwriting,electrostatic
discharges,andpullingthememorycardoutwhiletheOmniScanisactive.Often,
theonlywaytofixtheproblemistoerasetheproblemfileorfiles,ortoreformat
thememorycard.

CAUTION
Createbackupfilesbeforeyoureformatamemorycard.Reformattingamemory
cardcausesthelossofalldataonthecard.
