A NEW DIRECTION FOR WARD 9

PRESS RELEASE

RACIAL DIVIDE: ALONDRA CANO SUPRESSES DFL EAST AFRICANS IN

WARD 9

Minneapolis City Council member Alondra Cano is attempting to create a racial divide in Ward 9
by challenging nearly every East African delegate to the 9th Ward DFL convention on April 29,
2017. Trish Welte, campaign manager for Cano, filed a challenge to 101 delegates and alternates
to the 9th Ward DFL Convention. Of the 101 delegates and alternates challenged, 90 individuals
have East African surnames. Council Member Cano has also challenged the delegate status of
both of her opponents, Mohamed Farah and Gary Schiff. Official DFL records show that all chal-
lenged people were pre-registered or signed in at the April 4, 2017 caucus.

It is unacceptable for all residents of Ward 9 who Cano claims to lead.

Mohamed Farah, a candidate running against Cano, likened Canos tactics to those of Donald
Trump. Alondra Cano is acting like Donald Trump. Trump wants a Muslim travel ban and Cano
wants to ban East Africans from the DFL endorsement process based on their surnames alone,
Farah said.

This is voter suppression plain and simple, Farah explained. On April 4, more than 500 East
Africans came out to participate in the democratic process. This was an unprecedented awaken-
ing. Council member Cano simply cant tolerate the opinions of others. At the start of this cam-
paign, I was warned that the Cano would stop at nothing to preserve her job. Im utterly shocked
at her tactics. Cano is using Jim Crow tactics. Her campaign is challenging the right to participate
of nearly every East African, and even her fellow candidates

Her action in challenging delegates is exactly what she did to constituents who questioned her
conduct in emails and when she doxed them by publishing their names, email addresses, and
phone numbers, Farah said. Canos bottom line is that is that if you disagree with her, she will
challenge you and try to take you down.

The Farah campaign plans to defend the rights of all voters to participate in the April 29th DFL
convention at South High Schoool, no matter what their background or who they support. The
Farah campaign will also defend the right of to participate of Gary Schiff and his supporters.

We believe that the delegates elected the night of April 4 should decide the DFL endorsement. I
call on council member Cano to withdraw her challenges and not alienate the East African com-
munity from the process, Farah said.
