Introduction
Wellbore Planner is a product from Landmark Graphics Corporation that provides well planning
capabilities in an integrated geoscience environment. It is intended to improve the well planning
process, speed up cycle time, and increase the communications between geoscientists and drilling
engineers.
These Release Notes are intended for both users and system administrators. They contain
important information regarding the installation and use of Wellbore Planner R2003.12;
consequently, you should read these notes in their entirety before installing or using the software.
This document should help you troubleshoot any problems you may experience while running
Wellbore Planner.
System Requirements
Normally, Wellbore Planner is used in conjunction with one or more applications (such as
EarthCube, OpenVision, StratWorks 3D, SeisWorks, or Stratamodel), which provide it with
targets. Wellbore Planners system requirements are considerably less than any of these other
applications so you should make sure that you have a properly configured system for the Target
Server application before proceeding.
Hardware Requirements
The table below describes the minimum and recommended hardware configurations for running
Wellbore Planner.
Wellbore Planner requires the following operating systems and supporting software:
SunOS 5.8 (Solaris 8.0 Operating IRIX 6.5.11m OS RedHat Enterprise Linux WS 2.1

Oracle, and hardware configuration issues known at the time of release. Contact Landmark
Customer Support for possible updated information.
The following table lists the disk space required for Wellbore Planner.
Installation
All Wellbore Planner R2003.12 software is delivered on CD-ROM. You can use the Landmark
Release Manager on the CD-ROM to install Wellbore Planner. For complete information about
installing from the CD-ROM, see the Release 2003.12 Release Notes (Global Release Notes).
For all products, the directory being written to must allow the installer permission to write in order to have a
successful install. If you have write permissions on only some files in the directory and not others, the files to
which you do have permissions will be removed, but the other files will not. This combination of old and new files
will prevent a successful installation. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you log in as root using the su - root
command when installing Wellbore Planner.
If you install as non-root, the installation may fail due to permission problems with some files, $OWHOME/conf/
services.dat for example. To complete the installation, you need to become root or log in as the user that owns the
conf directory and the services.dat file and then run the Product Install Script.
Installation Order
If you have not previously installed OpenWorks R2003.12, complete all of the following steps to
install Wellbore Planner R2003.12. Make sure you complete the steps in order. For more
information about installing Wellbore Planner R2003.12, see the Release 2003.12 Release Notes
(Global Release Notes).
1. Follow the directions included in the OpenWorks 2003.12 Installation Procedures manual.
The PDF-format file containing this manual (InstallProcedures.pdf) can also be found on the
root level of all the OpenWorks installation CDs. This file can be examined on a system that
has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. This manual contain information on the installation (and
order of installation) of Adobe Acrobat Reader, Oracle, OpenWorks, and the Landmark
License Application Manager. Details on how to install these items on a number of different
systems is included. You will need to determine which instructions match the system that you
are installing upon. As you work through the information and installations for your system,
make certain that:
Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed if it isnt present on system.
Oracle 8.1.7.4 is recommended. Make certain that it is installed.
FLEXlm (Landmark licence manager) is required. Make certain that it is installed.
2. Install Wellbore Planner and other Landmark applications released on CDROM.
3. Optional: To display Wellbore Planner back to a PC-compatible system, install Exceed
version 8.0.0.0 on the PC-compatible system.
Due to changes in the manner in which Directional Survey Errors are stored in the
OpenWorks 2003 database, any Error Ellipses calculated and stored in the 1998.5
Uncertainty module will be lost during project upgrade. However, the data behind the
calculations will not be lost, so you can recalculate your error ellipses by using the Multiple
Well Calculation mode of the Uncertainty tool. Just select All and click on OK. This
operation recalculates the survey error ellipses and saves them to OpenWorks in the new
format. This is best done using a Well List that contains all your deviated wells.
Individual users may need to add the following line to the Applications section of their
launcher.dat files:
Wellbore Planner WellborePlanner 2>
$HOME/run/WellborePlnr.err 1>&2 &

Wellbore Planner incorporates FLEXlm 7.2e or FLEXlm 7.2g license management software from
Globetrotter, which uses software versioning in the license file (license.dat). This feature prevents
a license file from any Wellbore Planner release previous to R2003 from working with the new
installation. If you do not have a license for R2003, you must obtain and install a new license.dat
file from your Landmark representative before you can use Wellbore Planner R2003.12.
When you request a license, make sure you have the host ID for your system or systems (servers
and clients), as well as server host names. To obtain a hostid on any of the supported systems, enter
the following command:
$OWHOME/lam/bin/lmhostid.
Wellbore Planner displays and images will now appear in True Color (24-bit color) on all
platforms, provided your system is set up to display True Color.
Existing targets can now be imported from an ASCII text file. The Import Target utility in
Wellbore Planner allows users to specify the order of information within the specified ASCII
file.
The Target Editor now allows the user to specify an Up and a Down Thickness for a target.
These values allow a target to include vertical thicknesses above or below the specified target
Z-coordinate.
For a Platform Well, a user can now specify the Rig Kelly Bushing elevation, along with Slot
X and Slot Y Offsets to account for any slot offset from the platform center.
Pick targets in Time or Depth in other applications and immediately see and use them in
Wellbore Planner. Time targets can be converted to Depth using a pre-existing Velocity Model.
Create well plans that hit the targets and conform to user-defined engineering constraints. You
can create these plans from
View plans and targets in Plan View, Cross Section, and a 3D cube, as well as, in any Target
Server application (such as EarthCube, SeisWorks, StrataModel, OpenVision, and StratWorks
3D)
Generate a CGM file for hardcopy that contains all views, plus a special Drillers Report View.
Optimize the penetration points, the Mill-Out point or the platform location.
Export well plans into Stratamodel, VIP, ZMAP Plus, StratWorks or directly into OpenWorks.
Import the targets and well plans directly into Compass for Windows.
Save targets and plans either to the OpenWorks database or to ASCII files.
Calculate Well Position Uncertainty for both OpenWorks wells and Wellbore Planner plans.
Known Problems
This section addresses known problems you may encounter while operating Wellbore Planner.
Irregular Targets
Use of an irregular target with a target thickness may result in unexpected behaviors when using
Wellbore Planner alone, or in conjunction with other applications.
Set the CDE Style Manager Color Number of Colors to Most Colors from
Applications. (You must restart X-windows to see the change.)
Enter the Style Manager Window and turn off the Allow Primary Windows on Top option.
Turning this functionality off prevents child windows from going behind the main application
window.
Wells without TD
If the OpenWorks Well Header table has no TD value for a well, the well displays from 300000 to
0 feet in Section View. To avoid this, add a TD value for the well using OpenWorks Well
Data Manager. (Scopus #120368)
the target parameters specified within the Target Editor dialog box are utilized and the changes are
reflected in other views and applications, but the view within this dialog box itself may not be
visible.
Targets
It is not always possible for the application to calculate a path from a given set of targets.
Miscellaneous
The Penetration Point Optimizer can be very slow if optimizing a complex plan.
Repeated use of Add Wellbore Planner Interface to OpenVision will result in multiple
Wellbore Planner interfaces on the OpenVision menu bar.
It is necessary to calculate and save Definitive Surveys with well position uncertainty ellipses
before they can be visualized.
Italic font in Plan and Section views does not work on Solaris.
