Instructions

Part 1:
Go to the library and physically borrow or check out an electronic book relevant to your research
project. Read the introduction, conclusion, and at least one chapter from the book. Using your Everyday
Writer, cite the book in MLA 8 in the space provided. Select three sections of text from your reading
that accurately, thoroughly, and ethically represent the argument of the source. Using these sections of
text, create several quotations and write a 250-word paragraph explaining the books argument. Make
sure to properly use and integrate your quotes into the 250-word paragraph.

Part 2:
Complete each category in the space provided.
Authority: How does the author assure the reader that the information presented is accurate and
complete? Click through links, look up citations, or verify important facts in the book through a
web search. Are the links, citations, or facts presented accurate and relevant? Look up other
sources written by the same author or biographical information about the author. What are their
credentials?
Bias: Explain the commitments of the author. What do they stand to gain from writing this
source? Who is their audience, and how can you tell? What kinds of organizations, ideas, or
beliefs do they associate themselves with? How do you know? Are multiple viewpoints
presented and addressed, or only the viewpoints of the author?
Context: Examine the website, journal, or other context in which the article is written. Is this
context credible? How does this context assure the reader that the content it publishes is accurate
and well-researched? What sort of sources does this context generally use (i.e., scholarly
journals, popular press, twitter, etc.)? How do these factors shape your view of this context?
Date: What is the date in which the book was published, and how much does this matter for
your subject? Explain your reasoning.

Part 3:

Part 1: Citation & Summary

Citation: Simon, Robert, and Simon Jenkins. "The Ethics of Coaching Sports: Moral, Social, and
Legal Issues." International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching 9.1 (2014): 247-54.
Web.

Summary (250 words max. including quotations):

This book argues that youth sports play a significant positive role in our society, but whether that
happens is greatly influenced by the coaches. Therefore, coaches should be aware of the influence they
have on such a large group and should also know how to approach coaching so that the best results can
come out of it. In America, as a society, we value sports and what they can offer.we realize the
potential for sports to build character and promote necessary virtues for a greater cause. Sports are
entertaining to watch but offers the potential for much more important lessons to be learned. Lessons
that properly taught apply directly to life. Coaches need to know how to properly teach kids these
lessons for life. In turn, to teach the kids, the coaches must be taught. And not only teach these lessons
but provide an example for them as well, so coaches must be good teachers as well as good role
models. The sections talk about how coaches and proper coaching can be the key. Many life lessons are
taught by your mom and dad but mixing in sports with those lessons make it easier to expose the youth
to them and sports seems to help make the lessons stick better.

Part 2: Source Analysis (200 words max.)

Authority: Author provides citations throughout each chapter with references to academic studies
and evaluations that help support his claims. The facts presented are accurate and
relevant to his research and he explains them to show how they prove what he is
claiming is not only right but has been proven too.
Bias: There is bias in the sections. The author focusing primarily on the good and the
positives that can come from proper coaching and youth sports but never mentions any
negatives that happen. He answers and provides solutions to issues in youth sports but
never goes into the downside possibilities if the issues continue to solutions cannot be
found.
Context: The book was published in a science journal which is back up by the context of each
section. Each section uses proven data and examples to support its claims as well as
quotes from distinguished scientists who work in this field of study. This helps assure
you that what you are reading is credibly and accurate.
Date: The date of this book (2014) is very relevant to me because this topic and issue of
youth sports has been one of the hottest topics talked about and reported on over the
past few years. A book published over 10 years ago would do me no good because this
topic is fresh and I need data, opinions, and research done recently on it not a long time
ago.
Part 3: Research Reflection (300 words max.)
1 What steps did you go through to locate this book? What kind of source is it (i.e., more
informative or opinionated)? What databases or search engines did you use? Was searching for
this source easier or more difficult than locating sources for ILP 1 & 2? Explain.
Response: I clicked on the link to check out an ebook and followed the steps on the page. It took me to
a database that searched for ebooks as well as articles. I typed in my key words and scrolled through the
ebooks until I found one I liked. I used the Classic Catalog for my database. My source is both
informative and opinionated but leans more to the opinionated side. I think searching for this source
was more difficult than the ones before.
2 What knowledge have you gained from reading this source compared to the sources you looked
at in ILP 1 & 2, and has this knowledge affected your beliefs? Explain.

Response: I cant say Ive gained any new knowledge from this source just a new perspective on
knowledge I had already learned from ILAs 1 and 2. Even though this knowledge wasnt new it did
help strengthen my belief that youth sports is a great way to set up young kids for success in the future.

3 How can you use this source in your project? Which parts of the source are most useful for
your project and why? How does this source relate to the sources you found in ILP 1 & 2?

Response: As stated earlier I can use this source as a different perspective for my argument. Many times
people do not agree with you until you present things in a way they are use to or understand, this source
does that for me. Instead of focusing on the kids which many articles on this topic do it focuses on the
coaches and argues that thats really where this all starts, which I agree with. If I am trying to convince
adults that youth sports is a good thing then I the most effective way to do that is to show them from
there own point of view. And thats exactly what is source will allow me to do.
