Unit Title: Cooking with Fractions Name: Susan Mejia

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 5th 6th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given
fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of
fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d =
(ad + bc)/bd.)

CCS. MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.2
2. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole,
including cases of unlike
denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use
benchmark fractions and
number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example,
recognize an
incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.

CCS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B. 7. C
c. Solve real-world problems involving division of unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and division
of whole numbers
by unit fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For
example, how much
chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 1/3-cup servings
are in 2 cups
of raisins?
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.2
Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b 0, and use rate language in
the context of a ratio relationship. For example, "This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of
sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar." "We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate
of $5 per hamburger."

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.B.6
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical
problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at
hand, any number in a specified set.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

What purpose do fractions have in mathematics?

What do fractions represent in everyday life?

What do variables represent in a math problem?

How do we know when we are presented with a rate problem?

What purpose do rates serve in math?

What is an example of rate language?

Are there similarities rates and ratios share?

Can we extend that similarities to incorporate fractions? Why or why not?

Unit Summary:
This unit will offer a greater understanding of fractions and rates and the impact they create in everyday life.
To begin, students will be able to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. Next, students
will be able to convert the serving size of a recipe to half or double that which is given using adding and
subtracting of fractions. They will be able to identify the denominator and numerator of a fraction and what
they each represent. Students will learn the art of translating fraction and rate related problems into
equations. Students will also learn how to interpret rate and fractional language in word problems. Along with
these goals, students will be working in groups in class to solve fractional problems with like/unlike
denominators. Students will be required to complete in- class worksheets regarding rate related language
word problems and fraction-related word problems. Students will be asked to create posters, presentations,
and charts that show they know how to add/ subtract fractions, solve rate problems, and solve ratios.
Students will be assessed on a final presentation of a recipe conversion of their choosing. Students will be
given online and in-class quizzes so they, along with myself, can assess what they know about the material
being covered in class and if they are fully grasping the material. To present this, students will create a report
which illustrates your steps in the process and present it to the class via PowerPoint. Lastly, students will be
assessed on their overall understanding through an exam on the three topics, upon completion of the last
activity.

Assessment Plan:
