Title of Lesson: Turtles, Trash and Tidying
Grade: 5

STANDARDS

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2.E Provide a concluding statement or section related to the

information or explanation presented.

LESSONSUMMARY/OVERVIEW

This topic matters for students because they can easily be a big part of the change. It is
important that I educate them on the topic, so that they arent walking around clueless about
littering and the oceans animals. It also matters that they understand the effects that are taking
place when they litter, so that they dont do it and so that they can educate their families and
friends about it as well and can get the word out. It can ruin the future they live in if they dont
have ocean animals because every part and character in the ocean are what keep it alive and
running properly.

OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to show their understanding of the affects that disposal is having on our
ocean animals and discuss how we can use sustainability to save these creatures by creating a
poster board, conducting research and producing a concluding statement on the topic.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

At the end of the lesson, I will assess students learning through discussion and having them
create a concluding statement. I will ask them the question on Day 5, What are small ways that
we as civilians can help change the environment? By the response that I receive, I will know
that students understand the importance of saving the oceans animals through cleaning up after
ourselves. Also, students will create a poster board showing ocean life vs. ocean life with
disposal, conduct research and have multiple discussions on sea turtles and pollution in the
ocean.

PREREQUISITEKNOWLEDGE

Students must have prior knowledge on what disposal is. They will also need to understand what
the oceans atmosphere contains and how we are harming the animals in it and how to create a
concluding statement.

TEACHINGPROCEDURES

I will begin the lesson by reading the objective aloud once and having students repeat it back to
me. Next, I will open-up with the question, What is everyones favorite ocean animal? Then, I
will discuss with them what will be taking place over the next five days. I will set my
expectations from the very first day. Those expectations will be that students come to class with
questions for discussions, that work will be completed to the best of their ability and that I want
them to have fun doing this week-long lesson.

Five-day lesson plan

Day one: Talk about turtles, where they live and what they do for oceans. Have the class
complete research and fill out a graphic organizer to broaden their knowledge on the
topic.

Day two: Talk about what pollution and waste is and where it goes. Read Whats Waste
Management? on StoryJumper. Also, present statistics and information that students
found the day before during their research.

#page/16]

Day three: Show students videos and images about how turtles are being harmed by our waste.
Have a discussion about students emotions towards the videos.

Day four: Discuss what will happen if we lose sea turtles and if our ocean is continually filled
with our waste. Create a poster that shows what life looks like with turtles and ocean life
and a side that shows disposal harming the animals.
Day five: What are small ways that we as civilians can help change the environment? Create a
concluding statement that answers this question and discuss it with the class and in
small groups.

WAYSOFTHINKINGCONNECTION

The sustainability topic that is being explored in my project is all of them, but mostly
futures thinking and values thinking. Futures thinking is being shown because if we keep
polluting our ocean, we are going to kill off all the animals in it and then the ocean will suffer. It
is values thinking because we need to process the fact that we are hurting poor innocent animals
with our neglect of our trash in their home.
