THE INSTITUTE
In recognition to the brilliant contribution of the Bengal Engineering and Science
University, Shibpur towards advancing quality education and research in India
during the last 158 years, this premiere institute has been transformed to Indian
Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST, Shibpur), an
InstituteofNationalImportancebytheNITSERActoftheParliamentin2014.
Established with a mission to provide the best

OldBuildingof
Engineering College. Developed as the premiere BengalEngineeringCollege(1920)
engineeringcollegeinpreindependenceIndia,ithas
been renamed as Bengal Engineering College,
Shibpurin1920.TheCollegehasreceivedthestatus
of Deemed University in 1993 and subsequently
transformed to Bengal Engineering and Science
University, Shibpur in 2004. The then Honble
President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam formally

IIEST, Shibpur represents a new class of institutes


dedicated towards offering postgraduate programs
and advanced research, as recommended by the
AnandaKrishnan Committee. It has the distinction of
becoming the first IIEST in the country with
promulgationofamendmenttotheNITSERAct2014,
assented by the Honble President of India from
ScienceandTechnologyBuilding March4,2014.

VISION
The Vision of IIEST, Shibpur is to becomeone of the best Institutes in the world in
providing the stateofthe art multidisciplinary research ambience that will usher
innovative worldclass technologies developed towards realizing the goal of
DevelopedIndia.
IIEST, Shibpur functions as an institute of higher learning and advanced research.
Prime activities include creation and dissemination of knowledge; producing
engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs of highest quality equipped with latest
technologies and developing innovation technology solutions for the cause of the

society. These are being achieved by the team of brilliant faculty members and
researchscholarsworkinginadvancedlaboratoriesandacademicambience.

CAMPUS

The Institute has a beautiful green campus covering an area of about 121 hectares
situated on the northern bank of the river Hooghly, next to the Botanical Garden
and opposite to the Kolkata Port. The campus has a number of academic and
administrative buildings, library, accommodations for staffs and students, guest
house,auditorium,swimmingpool,studentsamenities,banks,school,hospitalsand
generalservices.

INSTITUTEBUILDINGS
The main academic complex is a four storied
building covering about 22000 m2area that
accommodatesmostoftheengineeringdepartments,
department of Human Resources Management,
OfficeoftheDeanandOfficeofExaminations.

The newly constructed eightstoried Science and Technology building with 14400
m2area accommodates some of the existing
engineering departments, science and management
departments,andvariouscentresandschools.Office
of the ViceChancellor, Offices of the Deans,
Registrar, and other financial and administrative
offices are also located in this building. Annexes to
this building are now being constructed to
accommodatefuturedepartments,schools,centresandoffices.
The old Workshop complex where the Bengal
Engineering College was originally started in this
campus is now a heritage building. Part of the
workshop is housed in the adjoining building. The

HEALTHSERVICE
TheInstitutehasahospitaltocatertotheneedsofthecampusinmateswithmedical
officersandothersupportingstaff.Itprovides24hoursambulanceservice.Besides,
thehospitalhasanIDWardtoeffectivelyisolatestudentssufferingfrominfectious
diseasessuchaschickenpox,mumps,measlesetc.Outdoortreatmentisavailablein
two shifts: morning and afternoon except Sundays and holidays. Serious cases are
generally transferred either to any city hospital or to the students health home,
Kolkata.ThisInstitutionhasthemembershipoftheStudentsHealthHome.

CAMPUSSERVICES
The Institute is provided with uninterrupted power supply from the Calcutta
Electric Supply Corporation. Water supply is provided by the Howrah Municipal
Corporation.Inaddition,theInstitutehasitsowncaptivegenerationplantandalso
watersupplysources.Therearethreeagencieswhichlookafterthemaintenanceof
various services in the campus: the Public Works Department (Maintenance) for
maintenanceofallbuildingsandroads,thePublicWorksDepartment(Electrical)to
look after the maintenance of electrical services and a Public Health Engineering
Departmentformaintenanceofwatersupplyandsewagedisposal.

CENTRAL FACILITIES
Inadditiontotheacademicandsupportingdepartments,thereareCentralFacilities
asfollows.

COMPUTERCENTRE
Allthedepartments,schoolsandcentresoftheInstitutehavecomputingfacilitiesof
their own. In addition, there is a Central Computer Centre which provides
computingfacilitiesforUG/PGlabsandresearchworks.ThisComputerCentrealong
withalldepartments,schools,centresofficesandhostelsareconnectedtoacampus
wide network with fibre optic backbone and the whole campus is secured WiFi
enabled.

LIBRARY
The Institute has a moderate library covering
3000m2areaandisopenfrom8.00A.M.to8.00
P.M.(MondaystoFridays)and9.00A.M.to1.00
P.M.(SaturdaysandSundays).
The library has the library management
software, LIBSYS4 and provides online search
facilities (OPAC) of its database from any
computer connected to the Internet through
WebOPAC and also from the computers in the library dedicated for the users.
Currently the library has more than 1.4 lakhtext and reference books, and 40,000
boundvolumesofjournals.Italsohasahugecollectionofdocumentsincludingsuch
aspatents,standards,technicalreportsandpamphlets.Thelibraryboastsofhaving

agoodcollectionofoldandrarebooksandjournalsofthenineteenthcentury.The
library is a member of Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Science and
Technology (INDEST) and UGCINFONET Digital Library Consortium of
Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre and provides online access
to full text of journals including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE),
AmericanSocietyofMechanicalEngineers(ASME),EconomicandPoliticalWeekly,
IEEE/IIEEElectronicLibrary(IELOnline),ISID,JCCC@INFLIBNET,JSTOR,Science
Direct,SpringerLinkandmanyothers.Currentlythelibraryisundertheprocessof
renovationandmodernizationwiththeobjectiveofproviding24hrsonlineaccessto
moreeBooks,eJournals,learningresourcesandvideolectures.

PRESS
The Institute has a modest printing press with necessary staff and machines. The
press is utilised to print Institute news bulletins, seminars proceedings and other
miscellaneousmaterials.

WORKSHOP
The Workshop Complex has nine engineering shops to offer trainings in different
basicshoppracticesincludingCarpentryShop,SmithyShop,WeldingandPainting
Shop,FittingShop,Machine Shop, FoundryandPatternShop,Boiler Shop,Electric
Shop,AutomobileShopandProjectModelShop.

STUDENTSAFFAIRS
Headed by a Dean of Students Affair, the
students of this Institute are encouraged to
participateinsportsandgamesaswellasvarious
cultural activities likemusic, photography,
dramatics, paintings,
model making, creative
writing and debating
etc. in the Students Centre for creative expressions. The
Institute has the unique model of students representative
bodycalledtheStudentsSenate.

HUMANRESOURCEMANAGEMENT
Department of Human Resource Management is responsible for facilitating job
placementsaswellaspracticaltrainingfortheengineeringstudentsofthisInstitute.
The department assists the students in arranging training in industrial
establishments during summer vacation for the prefinal year students and also
coordinates Post Graduate Practical Training for fresh graduates in collaboration
withBoardofPracticalTraining,EasternRegion,Govt.ofIndia.

Thesedualdegreecoursesextendover10semesters.Aftersuccessfulcompletionof
thecourseastudentreceivesbothaB.TechandaM.Techdegree.Theadmissionis
donethroughJEEMainandconductedbyCSAB.

FIVEYEARB.ARCHPROGRAM
The Institute also offers regular fulltime 5year undergraduate program in
Architecture. After successful completion of the program a student earns a B.Arch
degreeasperthenormsoftheCouncilofArchitecture(COA),India.

TheadmissiontotheintegratedB.TechM.TechaswellastheB.Archprogramme
isdonethroughJEEMainexamination.

TWOYEARFULLTIMEM.SC.PROGRAMME
These programmes are offered by the departments under the Faculty of Basic and
Applied Sciences namely; Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Earth Sciences and the
SchoolofCommunityScience and Technology (SOCSAT).Thedegreesofferedare
M.Sc. in Applied mathematics, Applied Chemistry, Applied Physics, Applied
Geology,andFoodandNutritionSciencesfromthedepartmentsmentionedabove,
respectively.

TheadmissiontoM.Sc.programmeisdoneintwoways.Fiftypercentoftheseats
arefilledthroughCCMNthecentralisedbodytoconductamissionandcounselling
toM.Sc.programmeformanyNITsandCFTIswithJAMasmandatoryrequirement.
TheotherfiftypercentseatsarefilledthroughanadmissiontestconductedbyIIEST.

TWOYEARFULLTIMEM.TECHPROGRAMME
AlltheEngineeringDepartmentsincludingArchitectureaswellasmanyspecialised
schools and centres offer 2year full time PG programme leading to M. Tech and

MURP(forArchitecture)degrees.FulldetailsareavailableinthePGbrochureforM.
Tech courses. The admission is done through CCMT or the Centralised Admission
cum Counselling System for the NITs and CFTIs with GATE as mandatory
requirement.

TWOYEARFULLTIMEMBAPROGRAMME

This institute offers a 2year full time MBA programme under the School of
Management Sciences (a school under the faculty of Humanities and Social
Sciences)

THE PH. D. PROGRAMME


ThePh.D.programmeisofferedbyalltheDeartments,SchoolsandCentresofthis
Instituteunderthethreefaculties,namely,Engineering,BasicandAppliedSciences
andSocialandManagementSciences.

Usually,theadmissionisdoneintwocycles;oneinJuly,referredtoas1stcylceand
the other in January, referred to as 2nd cycle, in a year. Corresponding admission
callsaregiveninthemediaandourwebsiteinthemonthofMayandNovember,
respecively.

ADMISSIONPROCEDURE
Anadmissionannouncementismadeonthewebsiteindicatingthenumberofseats,
thepossibleareasofresaerchandthenameofthecorrespondingsupervisorsform
the departments, schools and centres (see Appendix I for the specimen admission
announcement).Thenumebrofscholarshipsavailablearealsoannounced.

Applications are accepted through an online admission portal and an admission


testfollowedbyaninterviewarecarriedouttoselectscholars.

ACCOMMODATIONFACILITIES
Each Hall or Hostel of residence manages its own mess through duly elected Mess
CommitteewhichworkundertheguidanceofSuperintendentoftheHostelasMess
President.Allboardersareprovidedwiththetwoprincipalmealsfromtheattached
messes unless specially exempted by the authority. There are three hostels
exclusivelyforgirlstudents.

Due to an increase in the number of students in recent years the Hostel


accommodation is not guaranteed. Students from places from where commuting to
this Institute on daily basis is not possible are given preference for hostel

accommodation. Some private mess have come up around the campus. For hostel
relatedqueriesandaccommodationcontactDean(StudentAffairs).

DELAYINJOININGTHEINSTITUTE
AnystudentwhoisunabletojointheInstituteontheopeningdaymustsendinan
application for leave, countersigned by his guardian clearly stating the reason of
absence.Incaseofillness,amedicalcertificatemustbeattached.Ifthestudentfails
tosubmithisleaveapplicationhewillbeliabletoafineofRs.500/.Nostudentwill
beallowedtojointheInstituteaftertheexpiryofonemonthfromtheopeningofthe
session,unlessspeciallypermittedbytheDean.

REMOVALFROMTHEINSTITUTEROLLS
If a students record of progress in studies is found to be unsatisfactory within six
months of his/her admission, he/she may not be permitted to continue. Likewise,
lack of progress in a subsequent year will, in extreme cases, entail relegation or
removal from the Institute rolls. Students considered to be unsuitable owing to ill
health,badattendance,orotherreasonsofindisciplinearealsoliabletoberemoved
fromtheInstitution.

STUDENTSATTENDANCE
A candidate having a record of attending classes less than 75% in each of the
theoreticalandseasonalsubjectsofferedinasemestershallnotbeallowedtositfor
the relevant semester examination. Such a candidate may be allowed to seek
readmissiontotheoddsemesterofthecorrespondingpartduringthenextacademic
session,subjecttotheconditionslaiddowninrelevantregulations.

COMPLIANCETOINSTITUTERULES
AllstudentsareboundbytheInstituteRulesandmustobeysuchordersasmaybe
issued from time to time by the appropriate authority. Serious breach of Institute
Rules may entail removal from the Institute. Following rules should be rigidly
followed:

1) Allnewstudentswhohavebeenallottedhostelaccommodation,ontheirfirst
arrivalattheInstituteshouldreportthemselvestothecorrespondingHostel
Superintendent.
2) ASuperintendentmaynotenterastudentsnameintherollofthehostelor
assign him a seat, until he/she produces the Cashiers Receipt for the first
instalmentoffees.
3) Every student, on first joining the Institute, must provide himself with
bedding and mosquito net. Except with special permission from the Dean
(StudentAffairs),nofurnitureshouldbebroughtintotheInstitution.
4) Studentsarenotallowedtostayoutsidetheirhostelsbeyond10p.m.without
priorpermissionfromtheirrespectiveSuperintendents.
5) Disorderlyorindecentconductinthecampuswillleadtodisciplinaryaction.

6) Students are liable to have their names entered in the Conduct Register
maintained bytheofficeoftheDean(StudentAffairs)foroffensesindicated
below:
Disobediencetoorders
Absencewithoutleaveand
InsubordinationordisrespecttothemembersoftheUniversityStaff.
7) Students may be expelled for habitual or gross misconduct or for continued
absence or neglect of work, or for frequent entry of their names in the
ConductRegister.
8) Studentsleavingtheirroomsmustseethatthoseareproperlylocked.
9) Smokinganywherewithinthecampusisstrictlyprohibited.
10) The inmates of a room are collectively held responsible for the care of all
fittings and furniture in and near their rooms. Any damage other than that
due to normal wear and tear will be chargeable to the inmate or inmates
responsibleforthedamage.
11) The Institute swimming pool, beyond scheduled hours, and all ponds and
lakesarestrictlyoutofboundsforstudents.
12) TheOvalGroundisoutofboundsafterdusk.
13) Studentsfoundinvolvedintheactofraggingwillbepunishedasperrules.
14) Nostudentsshoulduseslippersorslippersduringclasshours.
15) Use of microphones, external lighting, VCR and Cable TVs in hostels are
strictlyprohibitedwithoutthepermissionoftheappropriateauthority.
16) StudentsareadvisedtoalwayscarryIdentitycards.
17) Swimming and bathing are prohibited in: (i) River Hooghly, (ii) Ponds and
lakesinsidethecampus.
18) The main gate will be closed at 10 p.m. However, in case of urgent work
students must get prior permission from the Hostel Superintendent to go
outsidetheCampusafter10p.m.
19) Hostelgateswillbeclosedat10.30p.m.
20) Ifanystudentisfoundviolatingtherulesandregulations,strictdisciplinary
action,totheextentofexpulsionfromtheInstitute,maybetaken.
21) Nobike/scooterwillbeallowedtoremainintheHostel.

CampusofIIEST,ShibpurisRAGGINGFREEzone.Atthetimeofadmission,each
student will be required to furnish an undertaking in a prescribed format that the
studentwillnotindulgeinanyformofragging.TheInstitutemaytakeappropriate
actionincludingexpulsionfromtheInstitute,againsttheerringstudents.

MEDICALARRANGEMENT
The campus inmates are under the general medical supervision of two Resident
Medical Officers. There is a dispensary and a hospital within the campus, where
minor cases of illness can be treated. Serious cases are referred to Government
Hospitals. Besides, the Institute has universal membership of the Students Health
Home,Kolkata.

GAMESANDSPORTS
All students are encouraged to join games or participate in some form of physical
training.Everystudentmustpossessapairofblackshortsandapairofwhitetennis
shoes.AllstudentsmustjointheathleticsClubandatleastoneofthesocietiesinthe
StudentsActivityCentre.

VACATIONSANDHOLIDAYS
The Institute has only one vacation: the Summer Vacation. No student may stay at
thehallorhostelofresidenceduringthevacationwithoutthespecialpermissionof
the Dean (Student Affairs). Other than the twomonth and a half months summer
vacation,studentsenjoyshortPujaholidaysandwinterrecessforaweek.Institutes
holidaylistandtheacademiccalendararenotifiedinthewebsitewww.becs.ac.in.

DUES AND CHARGES

Therearethreedifferentdues:InstituteDues,HostelDuesandMessDues.Institute
duesaretobepaidbyeachstudentandHostelduesandMessduesaretobepaidby
thosestudentswhowillbestayinginhalls/hostels.Alltheseduesaretobe paidin
advance at the time of admission to the first semester and also at the beginning of
othersemesters.Cautionmoney,however,isonetimeonly(duringadmission)and
need not be paid in other semesters. Caution money will be refunded after the
completion of the course. However, caution money will be forfeited if not claimed
within one year after passing the course or leaving the Institution for any other
reason,whicheverisearlier.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Besides the GATE scholarship for the Mtech students the Institute offers a large
number of scholarships to its students. Practically every meritorious and/or
financiallypoor studentmay getscholarship. Currently almost 50%of thestudents

are getting scholarships. No Tuition Fee is to be paid by the students belong to
SC/ST/PwD category. There are also provisions of loan scholarships offered by
variousbanks.AnumberofscholarshipsofferedbytheGlobalAlumniAssociation
of this Institute are also available to the students. For details, students are also

MIGRATION
AcandidatewhoisregisteredinInstitute/UniversityotherthanIIEST,Shibpurshall
havetoproduceamigrationcertificateandpaytherequisiteRegistrationfeetothe
IIEST,Shibpurusuallywithintwomonthsfromthedateofadmissionfailingwhich
his/heradmissiontoanycourseofferedbyIIEST,Shibpurisliabletobecancelled.

OPENINGOFBANKACCOUNT
Institute Fees (Tuition, examination etc.) are collected through bank account (to be
openedwithUCObank,BESUSbranch.ThisismandatoryforallstudnetsexceptPh.
D.scholarsandmustbeopenedwithinamonthfromthedateofadmissionfailing
whichtheprovisionaladmissionwillbecancelled.

A student is expected to keep sufficient amount in his/her account. The dues are
notifiedandautomaticallydeductedfromtheaccountofthestudentsbytheInstitute
from time to time. Defaulters with pending dues are not allowed to sit in the next
midtermorsemesterexamination.
