Distance Learning

For this project you will design and present a distance lesson synchronously (live) to
a student or group in a different location. The student or group to which you present
can be located anywhere in the world, but must not be in the same room or space
as you are when you present the lesson. Your distance technology lesson must
include audio of your voice and visuals, which could be of you and/or other learning
materials that you present. Before you begin your lesson, you must test out your
distance technology to make sure it works. Test it out with a colleague on another
computer to make sure things are working, and give yourself enough time to work
things out before the actual live lesson.

The distance lesson must have a learning objective based on one of the state or
common core content standards. You can find the common core standards (which
relate to language arts and math) at http://www.corestandards.org/read-the-
standards/ and the state standards at http://doe.sd.gov/contentstandards/. You must
also include an assessment activity to determine whether the distance lesson was
effective and implement this assessment activity as part of the learning experience.
A variety of free tools can be used to support your distance technology lesson such
as Skype, Google+ Hangouts and Talky. A commercial synchronous distance learning
service such as Adobe Connect, Blackboard Collaborate or Elluminate.

learning activities lesson will be a visual representation of the flag. I will have
you plan to use to pictures of the old flags of the United States, and then I will
meet the objective have a picture of our current flag. I will start with explaining
(2-3 paragraphs). why we have a flag for our country, and why a flag is so
significant. I will explain that every country has its own flag
that represents them in a meaningful way. From there, I will
show students pictures of our old flags before we developed
our current flagwhich was designed by Betsy Ross.
At this point, I will show students a picture of our current flag
for the United States, and I will ask them a few places they
may see it and how we show honor to it. After that discussion
has reached its conclusion, I will transition into talking about
what each of the parts of the flag meansthe colors, the
stars, and stripes. I will describe to the students the different
parts of the flag while having them create the flag on their
own sheet of paper.
While I am explaining the colors and why they are, the
students will choose the colors from the pencil box. When I
get to the part of drawing the stars and stripes, that is when I
will start creating my own flag as well to show them how to
make it instead of having the camera face me. Then we will
make the flag together as I describe why there are 50 stars
and 13 stripes. This will help the students to create their own
flag while I model it on their own. We will start with the box
of blue with 50 white stars, and from there we will draw the
13 stripes for the 13 original colonies.

happened for students that are more visual learners as well
as the students that are more audial learners. If students
wish to take notes as well during the lesson to ensure they
are remembering as well as have material to study besides
the flag, I will allow for more time for those students to be
able to learn effectively.

will show her the picture as I am working on it so she has a

adjustment was just not to block the microphone or camera
during any part of the lesson because of the fact that if you
fold the iPads case in a certain way it can block the camera.
And if I hold the iPad at any point, I have a tendency to cover
the microphone with my finger, but that is just a personal
adjustment I will have to make.

innocence. While explaining what those new vocabulary
words mean along the way with students because of the
difficulty of those words.
After that, I had my students begin to draw their flag, they
got the choice whether to outline it with pencil, black, red, or
blue (or yellow to symbolize the gold around the outside).
And from there I showed my students how to draw the first
part of the flag, which is the box in the corner with the blue.
While making my own flag, I explained and modeled how to
do it as well as checked in on my students. I also explained
what the stars meant and why there were 50 of them.
After that, we moved to the stripes with our red crayon. I had
the students show me their work throughout the process to
make sure they were creating their flag in an appropriate
manner. I also allowed them to watch my modeling before
making their own stripes. All in all, the students loved the
process of making their flag, and if I were to continue this in
my own classroom, I would have the students go then and
make their own flag for a country of their design including
what the colors and symbols mean.
But as a way to assess my students knowledge, I formatively
assessed them by asking questions throughout the lesson on
past parts of the flag learned and their meaning. And then in
the end, I asked them again to explain what their favorite
part of the flag is and why it is the way it is.
Include the results My students, being college students, understood what was
of the assessment taught in the lesson well. While questioning them during the
activity you lesson they seemed to understand the reasons for each of the
implemented (2-3 past parts. And though they took a little bit to answer the
paragraphs). question of which was their favorite part of the flag, once
they did they understood completely what it was about with
little hesitation.
Now, had this been with 2nd graders, the results may have
been a bit different just because they wouldnt have that past
knowledge of learned it years before. But I believe that the
lesson would have been very effective and meaningful to
them in a similar way that it was to my two students 12+
years ago if they can still remember it to this day.
List the key The key practice that I really focused on was providing clear
practices for directions and instructional materials. The nice thing was

lesson (2-3 This let me focus in more on the clear directions of making

an age where repetition is very necessary for them to
understand.
I never just said any direction or fact once. I always spoke it
in a different way or simply repeated myself if they seemed
to understand the first way best. Although I didnt state it
above in my learning activities section, I went over a quick
little preview of what we are going to be learning in the
lesson which would probably get most 2nd graders excited
simply because of the structure that they knew exactly what
was coming as well as they knew they would get to color a
little bit.
How was teaching I, personally, like the connection that just comes with being
from a distance within a certain proximity of students. It would also be a lot
different than harder to have classroom management skills by teaching at a
teaching face to distance than in the classroom. While in the classroom you
face? (1-2 can see everything that is happening a little bit better and
paragraphs). the closeness you have with your students definitely effects
behavior, you just dont have that with distance teaching.
But since I had college students for my 2nd grade lesson, the
behaviors that came from there were a little different than 2 nd
graders.
What parts of your As conceded as this sounds, I do well explicitly teaching skills
distance teaching and concepts in a way that younger elementary students can
went particularly understand. And although I wasnt teaching that young of a
well? (1-2 group, I taught as though I was. Using the technology also
paragraphs). went pretty well even though I sometimes doubt my
technology skills more than I should. Also, having the
pictures of the flags for the students was definitely a plus that
I would have to have while teaching the younger students as
kind of an attention getter as well as just another connection
to make before creating their own American flag on paper to
fully understand the reason behind the flag.
What would you do I would probably have tried a little harder to teach actual
differently the next students in the 2nd grade, but I was going to teach my little
time you get a cousin from Mitchell. However, between her schedule of
chance to teach dance and cheer, her brothers schedule of basketball, and
from a distance? (1- my work and class schedule, it just wasnt working out the

out a way to manage lets say a classroom full of students by
distance before teaching a group of them if that ever
happens in my career.
