Brief Description of Learning Experience: With the guidance and direction of the teacher,
students will collaborate with a small group of students to create a video on either the four basic
needs of plants or the parts of a plant. The students will work together to create an illustration that will
lead viewers to a basic knowledge of their topics. Students may create a story, a music video, an
interview, or simply create a factual video. The project will take approximately 1-2 weeks of in class
work to create a finished product.
Student work will be assessed by the teacher and by their peers. The video appearance and the
group participation will be assessed. The finished project could be used by an elementary school
children learning about the film process and also interested in the topic. The product will be published
on our classroom blog and presented at our end of plant unit party
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: This lesson is a LoTi level 5 because students are
assuming adult roles and publishing their materials for an audience. Learning is student-directed and
allows students to make choices about their learning
Importance of technology: The use of a multimedia-authoring tool is critical because it will excite
students and help them use higher level thinking skills to produce something of interest to someone
other than themselves. The project could be completed as an oral presentation. This learning
experience will also incorporate other tools.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: The video will only be published to our classroom blog, which
is password protected, the school will not be identified and only the first names of students will be
used, and the names will not be directly associated with the students photo. If there are still concerns
about a particular child, they can be assigned with other aspect of the project.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity: Students will be
assigned roles for the video contributions.
