Tutorial 4

1. A cam needed to produce a 22 mm follower rise. The cam angular velocity

will be 80 rad/s. the rise and return intervals are both 100o and the top dwell is
20o. Select cycloidal motion in your design.

a) Plot the follower position (s-diagram) for the full rang of motion
b) Determine the maximum velocity and acceleration

2. Size the cam profile and find the minimum radius of curvature for the given
cam schedule:

Stage 1: Follower rises 40 mm, 1.5 sec using SHM.

Stage 2: Follower dwells for 2.0 sec.
Stage 3: Follower returns in 1.5 sec using cycloidal motion
Stage 4: Follower dwells for 2.0 sec
The roller radius is 12 mm. The base circle of the cam has a radius of 90 mm

3. Problem 8.7. Design a double-dwell cam to move a follower from 0 to 60mm

in 60o, dwell for 120o fall 60 mm in 30o, and dwell for the remainder. The total
cycle must take 4 sec,. Choose suitable functions for rise and fall to minimize
acceleration. Plot the s v a j diagram. Use DYNACAM to solve this problem.

4. Draw the displacement schedule for a follower that rises through a total
displacement of 35 mm with constant acceleration for 90o, constant velocity
for 45o and constant deceleration for 90o. The cam then dwells for 45o, and
returns with simple harmonic motion in 90o.

5. A cam that is designed for cycloidal motion drivers a flat-faced follower.

During the rise, the follower displaces 25 mm for 180o of cam rotation. If the
cam angular velocity is constant at 100 rpm. Determined the displacement,
velocity and acceleration of follower at cam angle of 60o.

6. Problem 8.18: A constant velocity of 10 mm/sec must be match for 1.5 sec.
then the follower must return to your choice of start point and dwell for 2 sec.
the total cycle time is 6 sec. Design a cam for a follower radius of 19 mm and
a maximum pressure angle of 30o absolute value.

7. A cam rotate clockwise at a uniform speed of 1000 rpm is required to give a

roller follower the motion defined below:

a. Follower to move outwards through 50 mm during 120o of cam

rotation, (constant Acceleration for 60o and constant deceleration
for 60o)
b. Follower to dwell for next 60o of cam rotation
c. Follower to return to its starting position during next 90o of cam
rotation, (constant Acceleration for 45o and constant deceleration
for 45o)
d. Follower to dwell for the rest of cam rotation

The minimum radius of the cam is 50 mm and the diameter of roller is 10 mm. the
line of stroke of the follower is off-set by 20 mm from the axis of the cam shaft. Draw
profile of the cam and find the maximum velocity and acceleration during out stroke
and return stroke.

* Note, use polynomial function to solve this problem and compare your solution
using DYNACAM software.

VO = 5 m/sec, VR = 6.66 m/sec

aO = 497.2 m/sec2, aR = 888 m/sec2 Ans

O = out stroke, R = return stroke
