Scholars Challenge #4
Taxi Cabs, Choice (A)

This is a linear function problems, which is showing the New York city taxi fares
according to the miles and distance travelled. As the question has been given to find the
ride cost if the taxi travels 6 miles and 15 miles. Also to find the rate of change and to
write a linear equation to write a linear equation to model the situation.

The linear function miles and ride cost table:

X Y
(MILES) (RIDE COST)

0m $2.40

2m $5.60

4m $8.80

6m $12.00

8m $15.20

10m $18.40

12m $21.60

14m $24.80

15m $26.40

Firstly, I did was to make a table for the linear function on the left side is the X (mile)
input and on the right side Y (ride cost) output. As the fares some of the miles and cost
the taxi has travelled, 4 miles travelled ride cost $8.80, and 8 miles travelled the ride
cost $15.20 which I have plotted the value on the table. I did was to find the Y output
value by subtracting $15.20 and $8.80 the result is $6.40. Then I found X input value by
subtracting 8 miles and 4 miles the result is 4 miles. So to find the rate of change I did is
by dividing $6.40 the Y output value and 4 the X input value the result $1.60. To find the
6 miles ride of the taxi cost, I divided the Y output value $6.40 by 2, because that would
make the Y value half to find the ride cost of the 6 miles travelled and the result is $3.20.
Which I than added the new Y output value and 4 miles ride cost $8.80 that gave me the
answer of 6 miles ride cost that is $12.00. To find the 15 miles ride cost we have to go
down to the table on the X input value by adding 2 from 8 miles to 14 miles on the Y
output value by adding $15.20 till $24.80. Then I wrote 15 miles on the X input value, so
to find the Y output value as the difference from 14 miles to 15 miles is 1 mile, and I did
was just place in the rate of change value $1.60 because it has 1 mile difference, then
the procedure is to add 14 miles ride cost value $ 24.80 and the rate of change value is
$1.60 the answer is $26.40. Then the next problem is to find the rate of change which
has been found earlier is $1.60 and what does it mean in the context of the problem? It
means as the taxi travels more distance for each miles $1.60 will be added.

The linear equation is Y=1.60x+2.40. This is an increasing linear function, the rate of
change has been found by dividing the Y output value $6.40 and X input value 4 miles
the answer is $1.60 and to find the Y-intercept we have to subtract miles by 2 from 4 till
0 mile and the ride cost $8.80 till 0 miles the answer is $2.40.
