Anticipatory Set:
Read Raz Kids Blue Whales: Giant Mammals

Teacher Actions:
When students finish bell work, call them to the rug
Tell students we are going to listen to a Raz Kids book about blue whales
Note the connection to this weeks story: Dear Mr. Blueberry
Tell the students to listen for any facts about whales that come up throughout the
Raz Kids story
Play Raz Kids book Blue Whales: Giant Mammals
Ask students to recall facts they heard while listening to the
As students share the facts, write them on the board
Ask the students if they can tell you the genre of the book we have just read
Ask the students if Dear Mr. Blueberry was the same genre. Why?
Hold a small discussion about what the difference is between fact and fiction
Explain to the students they will be completing a trifold that will help them
distinguish the facts and the fiction within the story
Explain to students how to create their trifold: cut out facts and fiction boxes and
glue them to their correct place
Show example of trifold
Pass out trifold
Tell students that they are allowed to color their whale trifold once they have
completed sorting the facts and fiction from the story
Allow students to work with their neighbor if needed, but do not allow for
relocating of seats

Sit on the rug and listen to Raz Kids book Blue Whales: Giant Mammals
Recall facts heard in Raz Kids story
Actively participate in discussion and offer any facts to add to the board
Actively participate in discussion about the genre of Blue Whales: Giant
Mammals and Dear Mr. Blueberry
Actively participate in fact and fiction discussion
Cut out fact and fiction boxes and glue them to their correct place on the trifold
Color and cut out trifold

Assessment:
Students will complete a fact and fiction trifold distinguishing the facts from the
story Dear Mr. Blueberry and the fiction from the story Dear Mr. Blueberry
