Document B: Adapted from a letter written by Francisco de Toledo about Sir Francis
Drake
A ship belonging to English raiders passed through the Strait of Magellan into the Pacific Ocean
and reached the port of Santiago in the province of Chile on 6th of December last year, 1578.
This pirate ship plundered one of our ships that was carrying a large quantity of gold, and also
other ships in ports along our coast, and did a lot of damage. On the 13th of February it arrived
off the port of Lima, and we were taken entirely unaware by so surprising an event, for,
although there had been so much time for me to be warned from Chile of the presence of this
ship, nothing was done. Our friends in Chile failed to warn us, which would have saved so
This has grown considerable because of the loss of a ship that the pirate plundered which was
carrying a great amount of silver dispatched from this country to another. We have taken a great
deal of trouble to capture this pirate and have sent two armed ships in search of him.

Document C: Adapted letter from Duke Medina Sidonia to Spanish governors in the
Americas
As I wrote to you in my letters, Francis Drake arrived to the city of Cadiz on the 29th of last
month, with 27 ships and burned or destroyed 23 of our ships, and that, he was able to raid the
city very easily, because we were not prepared. Once he left, we figured he must be heading
back towards the Americas to do some more looting. It appears this is not true, as he has been
spotted sailing along the African coast. It is understood that he is going to try and obstruct and
prevent the passage of the ships that are loaded with supplies for our Armada. Please be on the
lookout for him, as we need to make sure that he stops interfereing with our creation of our
navy. It is rumored that he will leave the coast when our big money carrying ships are leaving
as well. He has already slowed down our process, so hopefully the Lord watches over us and

Sir Francis Drakes attack on Cadiz, Spain. It was written in 1587, and Spain was afraid that
Drake was going to attack the Americas again.
2. What is the purpose of the letter? How would you describe Duke Medina Sidonias feelings towards Sir

Document D: Excerpt from a biography about Sir Francis Drake written by Hans Peter Kraus.
The Spanish Armada of 1588, sailed from Lisbon, the capital of Spain in May, but wind and
storms delayed its appearance off southwest England until July 30. The Spanish plan was to sail
up the Channel; to join with more ships, which would ferry the army of Spain across from the
Netherlands to England, to land the troops and defeat the English, and to have Philip resume his
Drake's 1587 attack at Cadiz had certainly delayed the sailing of the Armada, and his
destruction of supplies for it also contributed to its defeat. However, it did reach the shores of
England, and it took hard fighting to insure victory over for the English. Throughout this week
and a half of battles, Drake was in the thick of the conflict. He captured a disabled ship, Nuestra
Seora del Rosario, on July 30, with one of the main Spanish commanders of the Armada, on
board.
Drake was again outstanding in his dashing attack on the Spanish ship, San Martn de Portugal,
on August 8th, the day when the Spanish Armada suffered heavy damage and was scattered.
The defeat of the Armada was one of England's greatest victories and one of the world's
decisive battles; it was the "beginning of the end" of Spain as the dominant nation in Europe,
