What is the benefit of repeating Vaheguru’s Name (Jup), and what is the benefit of
penance(Tup), and what is the use of fasting(Vrat) or worship(Pooja), to one whose heart is in
love with someone other than Vaheguru || 1 || O my fellow beings, get yourself strongly
attached to Vaheguru – the controller of materialism. All powerful Lord is not obtained through
clever tactics. || 1 || Pause || Abandon your greed and your mentality to please others.
Abandon sexual desire, anger and egotism. || 2 || Practicing of ritual have bound people in
egotism; what good is the hard work which is wasted in worshipping idols. || 3 || Kabeer says,
Vaheguru is obtained only by worshipping Him devotedly. Vaheguru is realized by simplistic
minded people who fall in love with Him innocently. || 4 || 6 ||

The mind wanders in all directions — how can one sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord? It is
totally engrossed in sensuality, constantly tormented by sexual desire and anger. || 1 || Try
singing His Praise and you will realize How great He is. The Name of Vaheguru, who is All
pervading is very precious and can only be obtained by following the instructions of the Guru. ||
1 || Pause || By acting upon the Guru’s word , the mind becomes immaculate, and then only
one can sing the Glorious Praises of Vaheguru. Guru’s wisdom makes one to understand one’s

own self, and then only one’s mind comes to dwell in one’s own home. That is it develops the
understanding of the purpose of our coming into this world and awareness about our destiny. ||
2 || O my mind, be imbued forever with the Love of Vaheguru, and always sing the Glorious
Praises of Vaheguru. The Immaculate Vaheguru - Akalpurakh is forever the Giver of comforts;
He will fulfill all the desires of your mind. || 3 || I was lowly, but I have been exalted, entering
the Sanctuary of Vaheguru. He has saved the stone that was sinking; This is His greatness. ||
4 || From poison, I have been transformed into Ambrosial Nectar; because the great Guru
infused His wisdom into me. From bitter herbs, I have been transformed into sandalwood; And
now this fragrance permeates deep within me. || 5 || This Human birth is very precious; I have
taken advantage of it and made my coming into this world worthwhile. By great fortune, I met
the True Guru who taught me how to concentrate upon His Name. || 6 || Lost are those who
followed the instinct of their mind(Manmukhs); They have wasted away their lives in vain by
attaching themselves to poisonous vices. They never liked the eternal word of Vaheguru whose
Name is an ocean of peace and joy. || 7 || Everyone utters Vaheguru, Vaheguru from the
mouth, but only a few have given it a place in their heart. O Nanak, only those will attain
salvation and emancipation who will hold Vaheguru very close to their heart. || 8 || 2 ||

Love and respect the Guru from the core of your heart, because He is like Vaheguru
Akalpurakh. The True Guru is the Giver of the soul; He gives Support to all. Live according to
the teachings of the True Guru; this is the true essence of all the thoughts. With the exception of
a deep involvement with the Guru, all other attachments including the attachment to Maya are of
no avail – or are just like dust. || 1 || O my dear friend, keep the name of Vaheguru deep down
in your heart. The Name of Vaheguru can dwell in the mind only when one learns to enjoy the
company of the Guru. Then only one’s hard labor bears fruits. || 1 || Pause || The Guru is All-
powerful, the Guru is Infinite. By great good fortune, one is Blessed with His Vision. The Guru is
Imperceptible, Immaculate and Pure. There is no one as great as the Guru. The Guru is the
Creator, the Guru is the Doer. Through the Guru true glory is obtained. Nothing can be
achieved without the Guru; whatever Guru wishes happens. || 2 || In fact The Guru is the
Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Wish-fulfilling Elysian Tree. The Guru is the Fulfiller
of all the desires of the mind. The Guru is the Greatest Giver, who gives Naam, which is
capable of saving the entire Universe. The Guru is All-powerful, the Guru is Formless; the Guru
is Lofty, Inaccessible and Infinite. The Praise of the Guru is so great that no one can put down in
words. || 3 || All the rewards which any one can think of are obtained from the True Guru. One

whose destiny is so pre-ordained, obtains the Wealth of the True Name. If one decides to live
one’s life according to the teachings of the True Guru, spiritual death never comes near him.
Nanak: may I never forget You, O Vaheguru - Akalpurakh. This soul, body and breath are all
Yours. || 4 || 29 || 99 ||

Without the True Guru, other utterings or writings(Banees) are imperfect. Yes! The writings are
imperfect without the True Guru; all other writings are imperfect. Imperfect are those who
compose such a Banee, imperfect are the listeners, imperfect are those who sing such a Banee.
They may continually repeat Vaheguru’s name with their tongues, but they do not know what
they are saying. Their consciousness is lured by Materialistic things (Maya); they are just
reciting it mechanically. Nanak says without the True Guru, other writings (Banees) are no way
near to perfection.|| 24 ||

One who utters Vaheguru, Vaheguru, but always practices deception, shall never become pure
at heart. He may perform all kind of deeds, day and night, they will be of no avail; he shall not
find peace, even in his dream. || 1 || O wise ones, without the guidance of the Guru, there is
no devotional worship.The untreated cloth does not take up the dye, no matter how hard any
one may try. || 1 || Pause || If one keeps on following the instinct of one’s own
mind(manmukh), one may perform all kinds of meditations, austere self-discipline, fasts and
devotional worship, but his sickness will not go away. Deep within him is the sickness of
excessive egotism and his love for some one other than Vaheguru has ruined him. || 2 ||
Outwardly, he wears religious robes and he poses to be very smart, but his mind wanders in ten
different directions. He keeps coming back into this world in various forms of life because under
the influence of ego, he can not concentrate on the advise of the Guru. || 3 || O Nanak, that
mortal who is blessed with the Lord’s Glance of Grace, understands Him; that humble servant
learns to concentrate on the Naam, the Name of the Vaheguru. By Guru’s Grace, he
understands the One and only One Vaheguru, and becomes one by merging into the One and
only One Vaheguru. || 4 || 4 || 13 ||

Everyone repeats Vaheguru’s Name, by uttering Raam, Raam(The one who is in every one);
but the Lord is not obtained by such utterings. The results become fruitful only when Vaheguru
dwells in one’s mind. || 1 || Those who love Vaheguru from the core of their heart, they never
ever forget Him, because they always keep Vaheguru’s Name deep down in their heart. || 1 ||
Pause || Those whose hearts are filled with hypocrisy, but are known as saints in the outside
world— their greed for desires can never be satisfied, and they had to depart repenting in the
end. || 2 || Even if one may bathe at various places of pilgrimage, the ego of one’s mind will not
go away. That person, whose sense of duality does not leave him — he is sure to get punished
through the justice system of Vaheguru. || 3 || Only that person realizes Him upon whom
Vaheguru - Akalpurakh showers His Mercy; This fact is understood by a handful of Gurmukhs –
ie. those who follow the directions of the Guru. O Nanak, Vaheguru - Akalpurakh is only realized
by those who are successful in killing their ego. || 4 || 4 || 6 ||

The perfect Vaheguru has fashioned the Perfect Creation. Behold He is pervading everywhere.
In this play of the world, only thing that is great is the True Name of Vaheguru. Let no one be
proud of one’s own greatness. || 1 || Those who accept the wisdom of the True Guru as
supreme get submerged in the True Guru. The Name of Vaheguru resides deep within the
nucleus of the person who understands and lives according to the teachings of Gurbani. || 1 ||
Pause || Now, this is the essence of the teachings of the four ages: for the human race, the

Name of the One Lord is the greatest treasure. Celibacy, self-discipline and pilgrimages were
the essence of duty (Dharma) in the past ages; but in this Machine age, appreciating and
singing the praises of Vaheguru-Akalpurakh is the foremost duty( Dharma). || 2 || Each and
every age has its own essence of duty (Dharma); study of the Vedas and the Puraanas have
proved it to be true. Those who concentrated on Vaheguru’s Naam through the guidance of
Guru, they are perfect and approved. Nanak says, by loving the True Vaheguru, the mind’s
egotism and self-conceit is eradicated. Those who speak and listen to the Guru’s words of
wisdom, obtain all kinds of comforts. But those who believe and act upon them get the supreme
treasure. || 4 || 4 ||

If one keeps material wealth(currency) in one’s mind(Simray) during the last moments of one’s

He alone is the greatest king, who keeps the Naam - the Name of Vaheguru deep down in his
heart. He who keeps the Naam in his heart — all his tasks will get fulfilled. He who keeps the
Naam in his heart, obtains wealth which is worth millions to him. Without the Naam, life gets
wasted. || 1 || I praise that person, who has the capital of the Vaheguru’s Naam. He is very
fortunate, who is blessed by his Guru (ie. on whose forehead the Guru has placed His Hand.) ||
1 || Pause || He who keeps the Naam deep down in his heart, has many millions of armies on
his side. He who keeps the Naam in his heart, enjoys peace and poise. He who keeps the
Naam in his heart becomes cool and calm. Without the Naam, life is cursed and death is sure.
|| 2 || He who keeps the Naam in his heart is saved in this very life (Jivan-mukta). He who
keeps the Naam in his heart knows all the ways and means to know Vaheguru. He who keeps
the Naam in his heart obtains all the nine kinds of treasures. Without the Naam, one wanders in
the cycle of life and death. || 3 || He who keeps the Naam in his heart is carefree and
independent. He who keeps the Naam in his heart always earns dividend on his wealth of
Naam. He who keeps the Naam in his heart has large number of family members and well
wishers. Without the Naam, he is just an ignorant manmukh who foolishly follows the instinct
one’s own mind. || 4 || He who keeps the Naam in his heart gets a stable & permanent
position in the court of Vaheguru. He who keeps the Naam in his heart, is in fact, seated on the
throne. He who keeps the Naam in his heart is truly rich. One who is devoid of Naam can not be
trusted and does not have any respect in the court of Vaheguru. || 5 || He who keeps the
Naam in his heart is recognized everywhere. He who keeps the Naam in his heart is the
Embodiment of the Creator Vaheguru. He who keeps the Naam in his heart is the highest of all.
Without the Naam, one wanders in the cycle of birth and death. || 6 || He who keeps the Naam
in his heart sees the Lord manifested in His Creation. He who keeps the Naam in his heart —
his darkness is dispelled. He who keeps the Naam in his heart is approved and accepted.
Without the Naam, one continues to come and go. || 7 || He alone receives the Naam on
whom Vaheguru becomes merciful. In the company of the devoted individuals, the Protector of

Of no advantage to you is your home, your power and your wealth. Your corrupt worldly
entanglements will not be in your best interest. Let it be clearly understood that all your dear
friends will not help you in times of need. Only the Name of Vaheguru will be on your side when
you go away from this world. || 1 || Sing the Glorious Praises of the Vaheguru, O my friend;
because remembering Vaheguru from the bottom of your heart will save your honor. By
remembering Vaheguru, the Messenger of Death will leave you alone. || 1 || Pause || Without
Vaheguru, all the pursuits are useless. Gold, silver and wealth are just like dust. O my mind hold
the Name of Vaheguru very dear to your heart because it is the source of peace and joy. Your
face shall be radiant and bright in this world and the world hereafter. || 2 || Even the greatest
of the great have tried hard and exhausted all their efforts. Materialistic things (Maya) failed to
get none of their tasks accomplished for any of them. Any person who holds Vaheguru’s Name
dear to his heart, will get all his desires fulfilled. || 3 || The Naam - the Name of Vaheguru, is
the anchor and support of the His devotees. The Saintly people come out to be victorious in the
test of this precious human life. Whatever Vaheguru’s devotee does, is approved and accepted
in the House of God. Nanak, the slave is a sacrifice to such a person. || 4 || 11 || 22 ||

Make the effort, and recite Vaheguru’s Name. O very fortunate ones, earn this wealth of Naam.
In the Society of the Saintly people, lovingly remember Vaheguru’s Naam, and wash off the filth
of all the sins of all your previous lives. || 1 || O my mind, keep the Name of Vaheguru deep
down in your heart. Fulfill the desires of your mind and get rid off all the sufferings and sorrows.
|| Pause || Have a vision of the Vaheguru – Akalpurakh with your own eyes for which you
assumed this body. Vaheguru – Akalpurakh, Who is pervading in the water, the land and the
sky sees all with His Glance of Grace. || 2 || The mind and body become spotlessly pure,
when one falls in love with the utmost reality - Vaheguru. One who has praised the Feet of the
Supreme Vaheguru ( ie one who has acted upon Guru’s teachings) has truly performed all
meditations and austerities. || 3 || The Ambrosial Name of the Lord is a Gem, a Jewel, a Pearl.

By saying whose Name, one’s mouth becomes pure. By lovingly remembering whom, one’s

Messenger of Death. By serving whom, everything is obtained. || 1 || Say the Name of that
Lord Who is present in every one. Abandon all other desires of your mind. || 1 || Pause || He,
Who is the Support of the earth and the sky. He, Whose Light illuminates each and every heart.
He, By remembering Whom, even fallen sinners are sanctified; they will not weep and wail over

Deal and trade with One and only One Raam – Who is all pervading. The One Raam, who is

Separated from the Vaheguru for countless lifetimes, the self-willed manmukh has gone through
pain and suffering and is still engaged in acts of egotism. Vaheguru Akalpurakh is realized as
soon as one starts acting upon the teachings of the Guru. I seek Your Sanctuary O Vaheguru -
the seed of the Universe. || 1 || Whenever one starts enjoying the Company of the Holy saintly
people, the Vaheguru, the embodiment of peace, comes right into the heart. || Pause || You
dwell, hidden, within the heart day and night, O Vaheguru; but the fools do not understand Your
Love. But as soon as the True Guru is found, Vaheguru – Akalpurakh is easily realized; one
starts singing His Glorious Praises and reflecting upon His Glories. || 2 || Through the
guidance of the Guru one becomes enlightened; peace of mind comes, and evil-mindedness
gets dispelled from the mind. Understanding the presence of Vaheguru – Akalpurakh in one’s
soul, one finds absolute peace of mind. This is the benefit of Your True Congregation, O my
Vaheguru. || 3 || Those who are blessed by Your Kind Mercy find the Guru and through him
realize the Almighty Vaheguru. O Nanak! That person finds an immeasurable amount of
celestial peace day and night, because he remains always on guard against the vices by
remaining in touch with Vaheguru-Akalpurakh, the Master of the Forest of the Universe.|| 4 || 7 ||

The whole world wanders around saying, “Raam, Raam” from the mouth, but the Raam cannot
be realized this way. He is inaccessible, unfathomable and utterly great; He is unweighable, and
cannot be weighed. No one can evaluate Him; He cannot be purchased at any price. Through
the Words(Shabads) of the Guru one gets convinced, His mystery is known and He comes to
dwell in the mind. O Nanak, He Himself is immeasurable; by Guru’s Grace, one comes to know
that He is permeating everywhere. He Himself comes to blend, and having blended, remains
blended. || 1 ||

One who has faith in the Guru in his mind always keeps Vaheguru’s Name deep down in his
heart. He is acclaimed as a devotee, a humble devotee throughout the three worlds in whose
heart resides the Name of Vaheguru. True are his actions; true are his ways. True is his heart;
Truth is what he speaks with his mouth. True is his vision; true is his form. He deals in Truth and
he spreads Truth. One who recognizes the Supreme Vaheguru - Akalpurakh as True — O
Nanak, that humble being eventually merges into the True One. || 8 || 15 ||
