Problem 2: (2 points)
A 4200-V (rms), three-phase transmission line has an impedance of 4+j per phase. The
line supplies a load with 1 MVA at a power factor of 0.75 lagging.
a) Find the power loss in the line.
b) What is the voltage at the sending end of the line?

Solutions:

a) P = |S| pf = 1M (0.75) = 0.75 MW

Q = |S| rf = 1M (sin(cos-10.75)) = 0.6614 MVAR
S = P + jQ = 0.75 + j0.6614 MVA

Problem 3: (4 points)
Find I1, V0, and I2 in the circuit shown below.

Solutions:
We reflect the 160-ohm load to the middle circuit.

ZR = ZL/n2 = 160/(4/3)2 = 90 , where n = 4/3

ZL = 14 + (60||90) = 14 + 36 = 50

We reflect this to the primary side.

ZR = ZL/(n)2 = 50/52 = 2 when n = 5

I1 = 24/(2 + 2) = 6A

24 = 2I1 + v1 or v1 = 24 2I1 = 12 V

vo = nv1 = 60 V, Io = I1 /n1 = 6/5 = 1.2 A

Io = [60/(60 + 90)]Io = 0.48 A

I2 = Io/n = 0.48/(4/3) = 0.36 A

Problem 4: (5 points)
Find the energy stored in the coupled coils at t = 2 msec.

Transform the current source to a voltage source as shown below.

I1 -j5 I2 200o

k = M/ L1L 2 or M = k L1L 2

M = k L1L2 = 0.5(10) = 5

For mesh 1, j12 = (4 + j10 )I1 j5(I2 I1) + j5I2 = (4 + j5)I1 + j10I2 (1)

For mesh 2, 0 = 20 + (8 + j10)I2 j5(I2 I1) + j5I1

20 = +j10I1 + (8 + j5)I2 (2)

= 107 + j60, 1 = 60 j296, 2 = 40 j100

I1 = 1/ = 2.46272.18 A

I2 = 2/ = 0.87897.48 A

i1(t) = 2.462 cos(1000t + 72.18) A

i2(t) = 0.878 cos(1000t 97.48) A

At t = 2 ms, 1000t = 2 rad = 114.6

i1(0.002) = 2.462cos(114.6 + 72.18) = 2.445 A

i2(0.002) = 0.878cos(114.6 97.48) = 0.8391 A

The total energy stored in the coupled coils is

w = 0.5L1i12 + 0.5L2i22 + Mi1i2

Since jL1 = j10 and = 1000, L1 = L2 = 10 mH, M = 0.5L1 = 5mH

w = 0.5(0.01)(2.445)2 + 0.5(0.01)(0.8391)2 + 0.05(2.445)(0.8391)

w = 43.67 mJ
