CL Structure Activity
Cooperative Learning Structure: Showdown

Content/ Goals: 3rd grade Vocabulary

Materials: Paper (8 slips each) in baggies, Pencil

Description:
1. Good morning third graders, yesterday we learned some new
vocabulary words from our book, today we are going to review them.
2. Can the boss please delegate one person from their team to come get
a baggy for their team, but dont open the baggies yet. Ring bell
3. Today we are going to use a structure called showdown to review the
vocab words from yesterday. I am going to read a definition aloud to
the class and on a slip of paper you are going to write which vocab
word you think it is. Can the person with the longest hair tell their team
what we are going to be doing? Ring bell
4. You are not going to be talking while you are writing your word down.
You come up with what word you think matches the definition. Can the
bosses tell their team what they are not going to be doing during this
part of the activity? Ring bell
5. After each team member has written down their answer, the boss will
say Showdown and each team member will show their answer to the
group. If you think your teams answer is correct, high five. If you think
your teams answer is wrong, discuss it and decide on the correct
answer, then high five. Can the person with the shortest hair tell their
team what we are doing? Ring bell
6. In the next round, the person to the left of the boss will call Showdown
when your team is ready. Can the bosses tell their team who will call
showdown after them? Ring bell
7. Now the person who got the baggy for their team, can you give each
team member one of what is inside and make sure that each person
has 8 slips of paper? Ring bell
8. Does everyone understand what we are going to be doing today? Can
the person who has the most stuff out tell their team what we are
doing today? Ring bell
9. Do structure, reading aloud definitions. After each team has time to do
their showdown, random call on one person (person #, team #) to
share their answer, have the class give a thumbs up if they agree.
10. Great job reviewing our vocab words! Be sure to be looking for
them while you read your book!
