Daily Instructional Procedures

The teacher will start off the class by introducing this weeks topic,

Earth Day. The teacher will explain why Earth Day is very important for

everyone and our environment. The teacher will ask the class if anyone

knows what pollution is and if they have any ways to help reduce it to

make our air and bodies of water cleaner.

The teacher will then tell the students that we will be reading a book

called Why is Coco Orange? This book discusses the effects of air

quality on the people living in the environment.

The teacher will hand out a list of words that will be used in the book

for the students to go over as a class to make sure each student will

have a good understanding of the book.

The teacher will utilize the Smart Board and pull up the book Why is

Coco Orange?
The teacher will read the book to the students, pausing to ask

appropriate questions. There are a few questions and answers at the

back of the book to help with this.

The teacher will then hand out the AQI color chart. After the chart is

gone over, the teacher should hand out a worksheet and instruct the

students to match the word with the color by drawing a line to each.

Students should be told that they could use the chart that they were

given to complete the worksheet.

Teacher should then go over the correct answers to the worksheet and

discuss it with the class.

The teacher should let the students keep the chart, but collect the

worksheets to keep and grade only for class participation.

Teacher should then explain to the students that each part of the chart

also gets a number ranking. The numbers go from low to high. Low

means good air quality and high means bad air quality.
Teacher should discuss with the students what they could do so that

the AQI doesnt get too high, such as riding their bike more or

carpooling to different places. Teacher can show the student what the

AQI is for today by utilizing the link below.

Why is Coco

Orange
Title: Why is Coco Orange
Overview: This is a story about a chameleon that isnt like all
the other chameleon. Normal chameleons change
color according to what their environment looks
like. Coco changes color according to what the AQI
is for that specific day.
Where: This will be used after the teacher introduces the
topic for today and introduces the vocab words
that will be used in this story.
How: This story supports my lesson because it talks
about pollution, how we measure it, and the
affects that it can have on people and their
environment. This is helpful for diverse learners
because they are receiving a copy for themselves
and it will be available on the Smart Board, making
it easier to follow along.
What: After the class finishes reading the book, they will
look at an AQI chart and what it means and fill out
a worksheet based on that chart. Then as a class,
the teacher will look up what the AQI is for that
day.

Day Two:

Duration
One hour class period

Materials
Smart Board
Computer cart
Blackboard/Whiteboard
Different colors of construction paper
Crayons
Colored Pencils
Markers

Daily Instructional Procedures

Teacher will introduce that we will be talking about pollution again

today and what we can do to help prevent it and better our

environment. Teacher should ask the students what they think we can

do to help reduce pollution.

Teacher will instruct the students to grab a computer from the

computer cart and a set of headphones.

Students should go on to the Internet and type in this URL:

https://jr.brainpop.com/science/conservation/reducereuserecycle/
Students should watch the video about recycling on the Brain Pop

website.
For students with disabilities, closed captioning is available, so they are

able to also read along with the video.

After the video is over the teacher will ask the students what they

thought of the video and if any of the students have any questions.
After the class discusses the video they teacher will pull up the link to

the word wall on the Brain Pop website. Here there is a list of words in

flashcard form from the video. The teacher will put the computer

mouse over the first word and the computer will read the word out

loud. Teacher will ask the class if they have any idea what the word

means.
After a few students answer the teacher will click on the flashcard to

reveal the answer and put their mouse over the definition, so that the

computer reads it out loud.

The teacher should continue to do this for the rest of the flashcards

that are on the word wall.

The teacher will the tell the students that they will be making signs to

put up around the classroom and around the entire school about

specific objects that can be recycled.

First the teacher will have the students brainstorm about different

items that can be recycled. The teacher will make a list on the board of

all the correct items that the students come up with.

The teacher will put different colors of construction paper in the front

of the room and instruct the students to come up and choose one.
The students will then be told to write at the top of their paper Items I

Can Recycle
Teacher should write this on the board also so that the students can

copy it for spelling reasons.

Students will then be instructed to draw three to four pictures of items

on the board on their piece of construction paper. Students will be

encouraged to make their drawings as colorful as they want.

Students will be given 20 minutes to complete their signs.
After the students are done the teacher will collect their drawing and

tell the students that they will help hang them up around the school

tomorrow.

Reduce, Reuse, and

Recycle
Title: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Overview: This video is about recycling and what can
and cannot be recycled. It also discusses why
recycling is important for our environment.
Where: This video will be used in the beginning of this
lesson for that day, after the teacher gives the
anticipatory set.
How: This video reinstates the importance of
recycling and how pollution affects our
environment, and gives examples of what we
can do to make our planet a better place to
live on. This video can be helpful to diverse
learners because it creates an interesting
visual for them.
What: After watching the video, students will use a
word wall to go over specific words and then
make signs about things that should be
recycled.

Day Three:

Duration
One hour class period

Materials
4 clear, plastic tubs
Sink water
Vegetable Oil
Glitter
Paper towels
Cotton balls
Q-tips
Smart Board
Computer

Daily Instructional Procedures

The first thing the students will do is go around the school to hang up

the signs that they created.

The teacher will hand back his or her signs and have everyone form a

single file line behind the line leader for that week.
Students will travel to various sections of the school and hang up their

artwork.
After everyones artwork is hung up, students should be instructed to

return to the classroom and quietly take their seats.

The teacher will introduce how pollution specifically affects water in

our environment.
The teacher will start off by asking the students if they have ever

witnessed pollution in the water anywhere, such as in lakes, ponds,

streams, or oceans. Teacher will let the children discuss this for a few

moments.
The teacher will then show the students a few pictures from the

Internet that are examples of pollution in bodies of water.

The teacher will then ask the students how they think all of these

pollutants can be removed from the water. Have the students

brainstorm different possibilities and write them on the board.

The teacher will then introduce to the students that they are going to

simulate pollution in water and test how easy it is to remove the

pollutants from the water.

The teacher should then break the students up into groups of four.
The teacher will walk around and place plastic tubs of water in front of

each group. The plastics tubs will be found in the closet at the back of

the classroom and the teacher will use the sink to fill them up.
The teacher will then walk around and pollute all of the childrens

tubs of water with vegetable oil and glitter.

The students will then be given different cleaning supplies such as

paper towels, cotton balls, and Q-tips.

The teacher will then instruct the students to remove the pollutants

from their water with the cleaning items that the teacher gave them.

Students should be encouraged to brainstorm with their groups

different ways to get the pollutants out before they begin.

The students should soon realize that it is almost impossible to remove

anything from the plastic water container that was given to each

group. Students may be able to remove pieces of glitter, but the

vegetable oil will be impossible.

After each group is finished trying to remove the pollutants from their

water containers, they will be instructed to throw away their cleaning

supplies.
The teacher will walk around the room collecting the water containers

and dumping the remains into the sink at the back of the room.
The students will then be instructed to return to their seats.
The teacher will then start a discussion about what they students

thought of the experiment.

The teacher should ask questions like, if the students thought it would

be that difficult to remove the vegetable oil from the tubs of water.
The teacher should then explain to the students the importance of not

polluting our waters because of hoe impossible it is to remove it.

Teacher will then also explain that because of this our drinking water

becomes polluted and companies have to go through a lot of time and

resources to try and purify our drinking water.

Water Pollution

Activity
Title: Water Pollution
Overview: Students will see how difficult it is to remove
pollution from our water.
Where: This activity will take up the entire class period.
How: This activity lets the students experience hands
on how difficult it is to remove pollution from our
water so they can see for themselves that it
doesnt have a simple solution. This activity is
helpful for diverse learners because it gives
students an opportunity to have a hands on
activity.
What: After the end of this lesson the teacher will just
discuss what happened and what the students
think of it.

The teacher will then invite all the students to come sit around the

reading rug so we can read the book as a class.

For students that have a hard time listening and comprehending, this

book is available on the iPad to listen to and read along. These

students should be instructed to leave the classroom and meet with an

aid to help them go over the book.

The rest of the class should sit around the reading rug and listen to the

teacher read the story.

While reading the story, the teacher should ask appropriate questions

related to the story to make sure that the students comprehend the

book.
After the teacher finishes reading the book, the students will be

instructed to return to their seats.

The teacher will then introduce that they will be writing a book report

on the book.
There are two different copies of the book report, one with a girl on it

and one with a boy. The teacher will explain this and then tell the

students to come up and choose which one they want.

After each student has a copy, the teacher will go over the different

sections that they have to fill out to make sure the students have an

understanding of what is expected of them.

The students will then be given 30 minutes, which should be the rest of

class, to work on their book reports.

The teacher will hand out a copy of the book to each student so they

can reference it to help him or her with their assignment.

The teacher will walk around the classroom to make sure all the

students are on track and they should answer any questions the

students have about the book report.

everyone would be sharing their book report with the class.

Students will be told that they should share what they wrote for what

was their favorite part of the book and whether or not they enjoyed.

Students should also be encouraged to talk about the picture they

colored.
The teacher should first ask the class for any volunteers.
The teacher should take volunteers first and after that they should

randomly choose students to share.

Students should be instructed to come up to the front of the room to

present their book report and use their big girl/boy voices so that the

entire class can here them.

The teacher should sit in the back of the room and listen to each

student present.
The students will be graded only on completeness of their assignment.

If a student is absent they will share their book report the next day

they are back at school and there is available time.

After all the students have presented that day, each student will

receive two pieces of double sided tape.

The students should be instructed to place each piece of tape on the
