The following educational workshop on albinism, as a part
of a project called Mi.Fi.Ma (Mi.Fi.Ma (Mikono na Fikira ya
Maendeleo - Hand and thought for development), aims at
providing teachers, educators, other NGO activists , political
representatives and people with albinism with biomedical,
cultural, sociological and anthropological information and
data on albinism and the population with albinism living in
Kilolo district, Iringa region and Tanzania at large.
The workshop intends to shed lights, on the one hand,
on the biomedical and scientific explanations of albinism
and, on the other hand, on the social and anthropological
understanding of the congenital condition in Kilolo district
(Iringa region) and Tanzania at large. The first part of the
awareness workshop on behalf of people with albinism
shows respectively: the biomedical classification of
albinism, vision and skin issues of the individuals with the
congenital condition as well as the genetic explanations of
the congenital condition. The second part of the workshop
focuses instead on an analysis of the social problems,
in terms of inclusion/exclusion issues, that people with
albinism have to face during their own daily life. While
stigma and marginalization are social issues that have
been discovered as primary problems for the inclusion of
these individuals in the Tanzanian society, inclusion of the
population with albinism could be and is improved through
family and education support.
The educational workshop as well as the project Mi.Fi.Ma are
realized by Tulime Onlus and financed by the Valdesi Church.
