TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR HEAT INSULATION FOR TANKS

& PIPES

SCOPE:
1. This specification covers supply and application of heat insulation for the tanks /
pipelines / ducts. Supply and erection of complete insulation materials on tanks, pipe
lines including fittings like tees, bends, valves etc.
2. Job includes manual cleaning of tank surface and application of 2 coats of heat resistant
paint of Berger / Asian / Equivalent make before insulating the tank & pipelines with LRB
mattresses as directed by the Site-in-charge.
3. The extent of insulation shall be as mentioned in the schedule of quantities.
4. Vendors scope of supply include supply and application of Insulation material, cladding,
tools, tackles, scaffolding, storage and protection of materials against adverse weather.
5. Notwithstanding anything stated in this specification, the Contractor shall not be relieved
of his responsibilities from quality of material and workmanship.

MATERIALS AND APPLICABLE STANDARDS:

1. The insulating material shall be preformed pipe sections made of rigid bonded rock for
pipes (minimum 144 Kg/Cum Rockwool / Equivalent make) and Light resin bonded
mineral wool mattresses (minimum 120 Kg/Cum Rockwool / Equivalent make) for tanks
confirming to IS: 9842/ASTMC57 or machine laid, machine stitched metal finish
mattresses made of bonded mineral wool conforming to IS: 8183. Manufacturers Test
Certificate shall be furnished for the material supplied, before commencement of work.
2. Material supplied by the Contractor must be new, non corrosive, non hygroscopic and
fungus proof.
3. Bonded Mineral Wool pipe sections or as specified are to be used for this application.
4. Metal cladding of aluminum alloy of specified gauge shall be used. The Aluminium sheet
should be of HINDALCO make only. Manufacturers Test Certificate shall be furnished for
the material supplied, before commencement of work.
5. Screws shall be no. 8 pan headed zinc plated self-tapping type.

APPLICATION:

1. The application of insulation shall be as per IS: 7413 latest edition.


2. Adjoining pipe sections shall be butted together and the longitudinal seam shall be
sealed.
3. Ends of the pipes shall be sealed off only at flanges, valves, fittings and at intervals not
more than 6 M on continuous run of pipe.
4. Blankets and pipe sections shall be secured with 24 SWG x 20 mm aluminum bands. All
voids shall be stuffed with loose mineral wool. Each layer of insulation shall be covered
with aluminum foil.
5. The joints shall be staggered and sealed by means of PVC tapes to make weather
resistant.
6. Aluminum cladding 22/24 gauge shall be provided over the insulation.
7. Contractor shall provide necessary weather proofing protection for the work in progress
and/or at the end of days work to prevent ingress of water into the insulation laid over
the pipes.

QUALITY ASSURANCE - LABOUR

1. All Insulation work shall be carried out by well experienced and qualified personnel in the
trade.
2. All Insulation works shall be started only after confirmation from the Owners
representative that the Pipeline / Equipment have been duly checked and are ready to be
insulated.

3. All Insulation work shall only be started after ensuring that the surface to be insulated is
free from dust, dirt, grease, frost or any other foreign materials.
4. Insulation thickness should be maintained as specified in the SOQ.
5. Housekeeping shall be maintained and shall be the responsibility to vendors site
supervisor.
6. Specifications for Insulation shall be followed and checked duly. All records of Insulation
laying procedure should be maintained.
SAFETY ASSURANCE

1. All materials for the job shall be stored in clean, dry and enclosed premises.
2. All Insulation work where hot work is involved, proper permits shall be taken as per the
company let down rules and regulations.
3. All Insulation work where work is to be carried out at elevated levels, proper permits for
Height work shall be taken as per company let down rules and regulations.
4. Safety appliances like Helmets, Full harness safety belts, Shoes, Masks and goggles
shall be used and practiced at site.
5. Partys Supervisor shall be stationed at site all time when work is to be carried out.

GENERAL

1. The surfaces of the pipes to be insulated must have 2 coats of heat resistant paint of
Berger/ Asian/ equivalent make suitable to temperature upto 250 degree.
2. Insulation shall not be applied before completion of site fabrication, pressure testing and
cleared by the Engineer-in-charge.
3. Intermediate and terminal flange joints shall be insulated only after they have been
cleared by Engineer-in-charge.
