Steam Education

Definition
STEAM is a way to teach how all things relate to each other, in school and in life. Its more fun than
traditional learning styles and makes more sense to all types of learners because it is based on the natural
ways that people learn and are interested in things.
Steam Vs. Stem
STEAM is a way to take the benefits of STEM and complete the package by integrating these
principles in and through the arts. STEAM takes STEM to the next level: it allows students to
connect their learning in these critical areas together with arts practices, elements, design
principles, and standards to provide the whole pallet of learning at their disposal. STEAM
removes limitations and replaces them with wonder, critique, inquiry, and innovation.

Art can be treated as an applied subjectjust like math and science. Here are a few ideas
for giving STEM projects some STEAM:

Creativity

Design

Performing Arts
STEAM Structure
The STEAM structure explains how all the divisions of education and life work
together; therefore it offers a formal place in the STEM structure for the Language
Arts, Social Studies, and the purposeful integration of the exploratory subjects
including the Arts, Music, CTE and Physical Education divisions of public
education.

STEAM = Science & Technology interpreted through

Engineering & the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements.

Benefits

The benefits of STEAM are clear. When children learn across disciplines, they are more engaged in how
the world works. More often than not, people look at a given idea from multiple perspectives. It makes
sense then that when teaching reading, teachers ask students to look at one idea or concept from many
different angles. This rigorous way of thinking and learning about the world may make students more
creative thinkers and activists who work to solve problems.
Steam in Education
Steam is being used in schools all around the world to teach academic and life
skills, it can help make good education better. It prepares students for a
growing variety of careers. Careers past, current and potential are organized to
be taught with STEAM. Students are taught to evaluate needs, wants and
opportunities in order to be informed users, responders and innovators. It
prepares students to be life-long learners in pursuit of college, skilled trade
programs, potential yet unknown career paths and well-balanced lives.

Why is the Steam Education important?
STEAM is important because it pervades every part of our lives. For example,
Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the
challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to
our home.
