Objectives

For experiment 1: To observe the type of flow patterns that can be achieved by the use of
different impellers with and without the use of baffles.

For experiment 2: To show how the power consumed by the mixer varies with speed, type of
impeller, and with the inclusion of baffles.

Theory
There are many impellers were used in this experiment including propeller and screw
impeller. Screw impeller is a rotating component which transfer energy from motor to the
fluid. The velocity that achieved by impeller were transfers into pressure when the outward
movement of fluid confined by the container.
In this experiment, baffle is use to stop the swirl in mixing tank. Most of common baffle use
are straight flat plate of metal that run along the straight sides of vertically oriented
cylindrical tank. For the tank that not contain baffle, the tendency for swirling flow pattern to
develop rotating liquid. However, there is a limit to rotational speed that used. If exceed the
limit of the rotational speed fluid will spill out of the container.

In the laminar flow pattern (Nre<10), the same power were used by the impeller. The flow
pattern may be effected by the baffle but it not favourable. To allow the fluid circulate and
produce axial deflection, the baffle are not need. In the transitional flow pattern (Nre<10,000),
the circulation of pattern will be clear when the baffle are placed in the tank, but the vortex
will disturbed the flow pattern.

Procedure

Experiment 1:

1. The power outlet is switch on.

2. All the tightening screws is fastened.
3. The working surrounding area is ensure to be dry and clean.
4. The shaft is lifted up using lifting chain attached to the shaft.
5. The tank was filled with water up to a depth of 30L.
6. The flat paddle was attached with the end of the shaft.
7. The speed of the impeller were turned up in small increments which are 50rpm,
100rpm, 150rpm, 200rpm, 250rpm, 300rpm and 350rpm.
8. The flow pattern were observed.
9. The procedures were repeated by replacing the flat paddle with screw impeller.
10. The procedures were also repeated with the baffles fitted in the tank with each flat
paddle and screw impeller.
11. Any liquid inside the tank were removed by opening the outlet valve.
12. The power outlet were shut down.

Experiment 2:

1. The power outlet is switch on.

2. All the tightening screws is fastened.
3. The working surrounding area is ensure to be dry and clean.
4. The shaft is lifted up using lifting chain attached to the shaft.
5. The tank was filled with hydraulic up to a depth of 30L.
6. The flat paddle was attached with the end of the shaft.
7. The speed of the impeller were turned up in small increments which are 50rpm,
100rpm, 150rpm, 200rpm, 250rpm, 300rpm and 350rpm
8. The flow pattern were observed.
9. The power consumed for each of the speed were calculated.
10. The procedures were repeated by replacing the flat paddle with screw impeller.
11. The procedures were also repeated with the baffles fitted in the tank with each flat
paddle and screw impeller.
12. Any liquid inside the tank were removed by opening the outlet valve.
13. The tank was washed and rinsed to make sure no oil residue after the experiment.
14. The impeller inside the tank were removed and washed after used.
15. The power outlet were shut down.
