Lesson Procedure:
Opening: Students will gather up on the floor in front of the teacher and listen as
she reads the book Elmer to them. When she is done, she will ask students to
retell the story by prompting them with Qs about what happened in the beginning,
middle, and end. Then teacher will ask students to describe the characters and
setting of the story. When Ss decide the setting is in the jungle, teacher will show
students two different drawings. One showing one tree and another showing
several trees. Students will discuss which looks more like a jungle (more trees).
Teacher will show students how overlapping trees makes it appear to be a jungle.
Students will then go back to table.

Work session:
Students will follow along as the teacher draws a horizon line, sun, and overlapping
trees (about 4). When finished drawing with pencil, trace with a sharpie. Go back to
rug. Talk about horizon line how its where the sky and ground touch. Then demo
how to paint their drawings. The blue sky goes allllll the way to the ground. Pass
out paints and let students paint the setting. When finished painting students will
get a piece of paper when the outline of an Elephant on it and will use crayons and
squares of colors to make their elephant patchwork just like Elmer. When finished
they will cut out and glue to their setting painting.

Closing:
Students will clean up their work area. Students will turn and talk to their neighbor
about one thing they learned in art class today. Students will use Plickers to review
