1. Show that the repeated limits exist at the origin and are equal but the simultaneous limit does not
exist, where (
1, if xy 6= 0
f (x, y) =
0, if xy = 0.

2. Show that the function f defined below is continuous at the origin:

xy
(
, (x, y) 6= (0, 0)
f (x, y) = x2 +y 2
0, (x, y) = 0.

3. Consider the following function defined a priori only on R2 {(0, 0)}:

x2 y 2
f (x, y) = xy .
x2 + y 2

Define f (0, 0) in a suitable way so that f extends to a continuous function on R2 .

4. Define a function f : R2 R by
x2 y
(
x4 +y 2 for (x, y) 6= (0, 0)
f (x, y) =
0, for (x, y) = (0, 0).

Then show that

(i) f is not continuous at the origin;
(ii) both the partial derivatives of f at (0, 0) exit.
5. Let f be a real valued function defined near a point p Rn except possibly at p itself. If limxp f (x) =
l 6= 0, then prove that there is an open ball B(p, r) such that for all x B(p, r) {p}, f (x) has the
same sign as l.
6. Let (
0 if y 0 or y x2 ,
f (x, y) =
1 if 0 < y < x2 .
be a real valued function on R2 . Is f continuous at (0, 0)?
7. Show that the real valued function
1
(
(xy)
e 2
, if x 6= y
f (x, y) =
0 otherwise

on R2 is continuous at every point of R2 .

8. Suppose that p, q Rn and p 6= q. Construct a continuous function f : Rn [0, 1] with f (p) = 0 and
f (q) = 1.
9. In each of the following cases, determine whether T : R2 R is linear:
(a) T (x, y) = x + y + 10, (b) T (x, y) = ex + y, (c) T (x, y) = x.

10. We discussed that every linear map T : Rn R is determined by the dot product with an n-tuple.
Find the n-tuples which determine the following linear maps:

(a) T (x, y) = 2x, (b) T (x, y, z) = x + 2y + z, (c)T (x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) = (3/4)x2 x3 , (d) T (x) = 12x

where x, y, z, x1 , . . . , x4 R.

11. Determine the linear map T : Rn R corresponding to the following vectors:

(a) (-1,2), (b) (1,0,1), (c) (0,0,0,0), (d) /2.

12. Find the velocity, speed and acceleration of the following paths:

(a) r(t) = (5 cos(t), 3 sin(t)),

(b) r(t) = (t sin(t), t cos(t), t2 ),
(c) x(t) = (t, t3 2t + 1).
