Church.3 On the one hand, Puritans knew that the Church was a
human and a fallible institution and, on the other, they blurred the
distinction between the visible land the invisible churches by assum-
ing that the Church on earth was composed of chosen persons. In
The Way of the Churches of Christ in New England, John Cotton
showed how liberal the New World churches were in receiving
souls into their fellowship: "We do not exact eminent measure,
either of knowledge or holiness, but do willingly stretch out our
hands to receive the weak in faith."4 Puritans knew very well that
the visible Church contained a good many backsliders; yet even
though hypocrites might filter through the screening, the Church
as a whole was, and ought to be, regarded as a gathering of visible
saints. A century earlier Calvin had formulated precisely this atti-
tude, stating that all members of the visible Church "have become
partakers with Christ, [and] are set apart as the proper and
peculiar possession of God."5 A confusion of the visible and invisi-
ble bodies of Christ seems the most plausible explanation for the
emphasis on the holy community in Puritanism. Church militant
and Church triumphant did not merely overlap; Puritans thought
of the two as being of one and the same glorious communion.
This collation of the human and the divine institutions neces-
sarily enhanced the .awareness of the community of saints. In
Anglicanism that doctrine suggested a distant mystical link with
the saints above, but in Puritanism it involved fellowship with the
sanctified both past and present. It was the latter immanent sense
that pervaded Puritanism. From it arose the urge to participate
more fully as a fellowship in the motions of the Church; and frag-
mentation followed in the wake of this increased congregationalism.
Independency represents the rationalization of this tendency in a
formal structure, a form of ecclesiastical organization that allowed
a relatively high degree of congregational autonomy. The paradox
of the theology of the Church intensified the yearning for spiritu-
ality and for corporateness and because it did so, started the pro-
cession of ideas that passed through Independency to their clearest
expression in Separatism - a strongly cellular, corporate, and par-
ticipative kind of church polity.
