Earth and Space Science Week 5 Term 1

Learning goal - Sudden geological changes and extreme weather events can affect Earths
surface.
Watch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay9jziPoo-Y&list=PLQlnTldJs0ZQmYcKNCBTiv2Ea64Qg0GJo&index=7
Create a storyboard to show a sequence of events relating to what you observed in
the video and photos.

We use a storyboard to show the important steps of a process in the order that they
happen. A storyboard includes a title and a series of drawings.

Each step in the storyboard is numbered and includes a caption describing the steps.

_______________ _______________ ________________ ________________

Prepare an oral presentation about your storyboard and include answers to these
questions.
We will share some of them if we have time.

What is the story of your drawings?

Can you describe what has happened in your storyboard?

What might have caused this damage?

Where might you see something like this?

Do you think this is a man-made or natural event?

Earth and Space Science Volcanos Week 6 Term 1
How do volcanoes form?

What are the four main types of volcanoes?

Where do volcanoes form?

Rocks are classified by what they are made of and how they form.
Igneous rocks always begin as magma. What are the two main types of igneous rocks, and what
is the main difference between them? How does each type form into solid rock?

Learning goal: investigate major geological events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions in
Australia, the Asia region and throughout the world.
World map without volcanoes: World map without volcanoes:
Do you notice any patterns? Are there any explanations for any patterns you
notice?

World map with volcanoes: What do you notice and can you think of explanations?

Explore volcanoes using an ipad search PBS Volcanism Interactive and use the HTML
interactive to research and record answers to the questions.

Six Sentence Story
Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvYCseEDVhg

Follow the formula to create a whole story in just six sentences.

Remember the steps!
Sentence one: Introduce the main character.
HINT: Make it unusual to hook the reader in.

Sentence Two: Describe where the story is set.

HINT: Use precise nouns and scientific language and ideas.

Sentence Three: Describe the characters special skill or ability.

HINT: What does it mean to be able to do that?

Sentence Four: Describe the characters problem.

HINT: Make the reader feel empathy for the character.

Sentence Five: Explain why the character felt that way.

HINT: What did the character wish for? Use phrases such as She longed for

Sentence Six: How did the character solve the problem?

HINT: Show, don't tell eg Instead of writing He solved the problem by try From that
day on, he decided to

Earth and Space Sciences: Extreme Weather - Cyclones Week 9 Term
1
Learning goal: extreme weather events can affect Earths surface and describing how people
measure significant geological and weather events.

Watch: Extreme Weather https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVZExLO0MWA

Weather Event Elements present

Blizzard

Thunderstorm

Tornado

Dust storm

Flood

Hail storm

Hurricane or tropical
cyclone

Major weather and geological events are measured using different systems - eg, earthquakes are
measured using the Richter or Mercalli Intensity Scale.
Queensland has recently experienced a very strong cyclone you may have heard about it.

Cyclones are measured using the Category system
Watch: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-19/tropical-cyclone-categories-explained/6956092

Use an ipad to research the Category System. Write to explain what you learned.

considering/6968122

Write - why are cyclones named and what was the name of the recent cyclone in Queensland?

Earth and Space Sciences: Investigating cyclone and air current action Week 10 Term 1

Learning Goal: to pose questions and make predictions about scientific investigations.
Identify, plan and apply the elements of scientific investigations to answer questions and solve
problems using equipment and materials safely and identifying potential risks.

In the southern hemisphere cyclones always spin in a clockwise direction but in the northern
hemisphere hurricanes always spin in an anti-clockwise direction.
This is due to the rotation of the Earth and the Coriolis effect.
Some people believe that this effect can be observed watching water empty from sinks or
containers down the plughole.
What question could you ask and investigate scientifically in our science room?

Use the equipment provided to plan and try out an investigation to explore this effect.

What is a fair test?

How will you do a fair test?

Write what you noticed and can you answer your question?

Plan: What equipment do you plan to use and how will you use it? Write and Draw
