Assignment 2
What is the learning focus? (be specific about learning, and/or development,
and/or dispositions and/or relationships and interactions that are the focus of
this experience)
The focus of this lesson is to provide children with a tool designed by them, featuring
them. It gives them creative control over something that is normally a menial task. By
giving them the camera, they need to cooperatively photograph the handwashing
process and decide for themselves which images will be appropriate for the poster. By
doing this, children may be more interested in proper handwashing techniques.
What do I need to do to ensure that this experience addresses health and safety
requirements?
Handwashing involves water and soap which are dangerous substances, if spilled on
the floor or on electronics. It is important that any water or soap spills are cleaned up
immediately, and that the soap used is appropriate for childrens use. Also, ensure that
these liquids do not come into contact with the camera being used, or the electric hand-
dryer being used.
How did it go? (Include details of how the child/children responded, how you
scaffolded their learning and how peers scaffolded each others learning)
It was difficult for the children to pay attention during the hand-washing song. It was also
difficult for the children to pay attention during my modelling of handwashing.
Children thoroughly enjoyed having control over the camera. Unfortunately, I had
access to one camera at the time. This meant that there was some dispute over the
camera. However, the older children kept instructing the younger ones when and what
to take pictures of, which was nice to see.
What have I learnt from this experience? (reflect on planning, scaffolding, health
and safety, relationships, meaningful curriculum, continuity of learning, etc.)
From this experience, I have discovered the importance of resources. In this case, the
use of one camera between a group of five children was not enough. It would be
recommended that more cameras were made available but due to budgeting, it may not
always be possible. In this case, it may be better to use smaller groups of children, to
teach and take photos and then they can design the posters collectively as a class.
This experience may have been out of the childrens age range. In this particular group,
the children were only just learning to write and spell. Because of this, it required myself
to do more of the writing. However, the use of the camera and taking images of
themselves in a familiar setting changed their attitude towards how they washed their
hands.
