specific alphabet letter. They will be able to visible match pictures in their environment with the
correct beginning letter of the alphabet.
Standards
Common Core Standards:
ELAGSEKRF1: Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of
letters.
d. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
ELAGSEKRF3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding
words.
a. Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the
primary or many of most frequent sounds for each consonant.
Learning Activities
First students will take the attached written pre-test independently to determine their pre skills.
Lesson 1: Show children the YouTube Video linked in the multimedia resources below,
Teach Me How to Read that displays & raps all the alphabet letters, all
the beginning alphabet letter sounds, and matches realistic photographs with their
corresponding letter/letter sound.
Having the children watch a video will help capture their attention, keep them interested in the
different letter and their sounds, and make them want to sing along with the artist to help
reinforce the concepts.
Lesson 2: Take turns going around the room, teacher will ask each child, What is the
first letter of your first name and what sound does the first letter of your name make?
This will help students make a Text-to-Self connection.
Lesson 3: As a whole group show the Hyperstudio ABC Match presentation on the
SmartBoard and allow the children to come up one by one and touch a different
letter to see what picture begins with that letter.
This assignment may be completed several times as review to
reinforce alphabet letter recognition and specific letter sounds.
*Use the visual examples of alternate phonemic sounds made by alphabet letters in the
below multimedia resources as an additional support if needed.
