Middle School Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 7

Subject: Middle School Spanish Topic: Ser and Estar

Objective: The students will be able to differentiate between the two verbs and use them
properly to form a sentence.

Standards: NJCCCS for World Language 7.1.NM.B.5 Exchange information using

words, phrases, and short sentences practiced in class on familiar topics or on topics
studied in other content areas. (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014)

Materials: notebooks, pencils, Power Point slides, projector and screen, textbook,
worksheet, handout

Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: The students have recently completed a unit on
conjugating the verbs Ser and Estar and understand the meaning of the words.

Anticipatory Set: The teacher will tell a personal story about her childhood that will
connect to the lesson.

Input and Modeling: The teacher will provide a handout with information on when to
use each verb and the acronyms, D.O.C.T.O.R and P.L.A.C.E, to help students remember
this information. The information on the handout will also be displayed on a slide show
as well as some examples and classroom practice. The teacher will work with the class on
explaining the hand outs and slide show as well as helping to do the practice sentences on
the slide show. The teacher will hand out a worksheet that should be completed with a
partner in class.

Student Practice and Checking for Understanding-

1. The teacher will ask the students to work as a class to answer some sentences
projected on a slide.
2. The students will then work with a partner to complete a worksheet that was
handed out.
3. The teacher will then collect the handouts at the end of the class and check over
the work to evaluate students progress and understanding of the new material.

Differentiation: Students will be organized in groups of two with the person sitting next
to them so that the students can help each other and check each others work.

Closure: Lesson Wrap-up and Culminating Activity

1. The students ticket out would be to write down the reasons for the use each
verb. Extra credit on the next test would be given if they can write down the
acronyms, D.O.C.T.O.R and P.L.A.C.E, 2 points for each acronym.
2. At the end of the unit, the students will be given a test that will assess the
understanding of the use of each verb.
