Describe Selected Issue:

Bike Theft on CSU Chico campus

Describe the research you need to do about this Issue:

Look into how many bikes are stolen a year on CSU Chico campus
How many designated bike racks are around campus
Check how efficiently safe and functional the bike racks are around campus
How other college campuses secure bikes on their campus
Estimated cost for new and improved bike racks
Project Parameters

Service Objective Statement (specific, formal proposal on how you would solve the
issue)
- In order to make sure CSU Chico has less bike thefts a year, I plan on developing a
system where students would have to take a course on bike safety called Bike Safety
101, if they would like to have a bike on campus.

Major Deliverables (what you would need to accomplish to solve this issue)
In order to accomplish this, I would like to sit down with campus security and faculty
who specializes in theft prevention to help me develop an academic course that will help
students understand how important bike safety is. Some other possibilities that may
help the prevent bike prevention is, Chico State can hire security guards on campus
which can be a student hired position. Put cameras/light post around the bike racks on
campus. Also, I would develop a bike license that you would have to pay for on campus
to register your bike so CSU Chico can monitor how many bikes are on campus. Lastly,
for future development I would like to make it mandatory that everyone must have a U
lock for their bike so it would make it harder for bike thieves to steal.

Any challenges you will need to overcome with your Proposed Solution:
- Some challenges that I would need to overcome is getting the Bike Safety 101
class, passed by student government for students to take. Also, having new bike
racks purchased and built. As well having students registering their bikes and
making it mandatory for them to have U locks. Lastly having an estimated cost
and everything being funded so the whole project can happen.
-I will strive to overcome these problems with commitment and dedication. I will
make it my sworn duty to have less bike thefts on camps and always have a
positive mind set.
