The IEP case study required me to demonstrate an understanding of the individualized decision making process. The process included collaborative planning with individuals with exceptionalities, families, and professional colleagues. This connects to the CEC standards 1 (Learner Development and Individual Learning Differences), 4 (Assessment), and 7 (Collaboration). I gained the knowledge and skills in learner development and individual learning differences (CEC standard 1) while completing this artifact. I gained the most knowledge in this area while completing the background information about the student section. In the background section, I was required to look into the students history. I was required to observe my student and also describe reasons for referral to the IEP process. I learned a lot from looking into my students background and history. It taught me more about the student. This artifact was designed to enhance my knowledge and mastery of assessment (CEC standard 4). To make educational decisions on the students IEP, I used multiple methods of assessments and data sources. The student was assessed using roadster on the letters and their sounds. She was also assessed on how many sight words the student could read. Assessing the student allowed me to see how well she was progressing and also to look at what the students needs were. The student is unsure about the letters and the sounds they make. She will mix up the letters. The student also needed support when counting to 100. My knowledge and skills in collaboration (CEC standard 7) were developed while completing this artifact. I used collaboration while helping to write the IEP and also collaboration when leading the IEP meeting. I spoke to my mentor and the special educator on the team when collaborating on the students IEP. I also spoke to the speech pathologist about the students speech and her goals. I learned that when writing an IEP, it takes more than one person and the more people who work on it together, the better it will be. The student I assessed and observed was positively affected by my mastery of standards. By helping to write the IEP and leading the IEP meeting, I was able to be an advocate for what the student needed educational in school. I am more confident from completing the IEP case study in order to facilitate and lead IEP meetings in the future.
