SEXUAL HARASSMENT
There was a seminar on the topic Sexual harassment conducted by Health Club, VIT. It
addressed the increasing number of rapes in India and how the society is reacting towards it.
According to the statistics, India ranks 4th in the world with highest rape crime. There are 300
cases of rapes and more than 500 cases of molestation in the first two months of the year
2015. 96 percent rapes were committed by those having acquaintance with the victim or the
family of the victim. According to NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau), everyday 93
women are being raped in the country. There is an average of 3 cases being registered every
hour and there is an average of 4 persons being arrested every hour.

For such increasing number of rapes in the country there must be a strong reason. According
to our society, the reason for increasing number of rapes is short clothes, flirting, alcohol, and
most surprisingly noodles. Girls who eat noodles are having increased probability of getting
raped. Society, not able to think, that the cause behind a rape is only a rapist.

The discussing after this was about date rape drugs. The drugs often have no color, smell,
or, taste and are easily added to drinks without the victims knowledge. Some of the
examples of date rape drugs are GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid), popularly known as
cherry meth, rohypnol, called roofis, and ketamine. Protection from these drugs is a major
issue; one of the techniques developed by engineers is successful in determining the drug in
drinks. They developed a nail paint, by which the presence of the drugs can be determined in
the drink. This nail paint changes its color when dipped in the drink and the drink is drug
positive.

Then the discussion leads to child abuse. Child sexual abuse or child molestation is a form of
child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation. WHO
estimates that 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 have been subjected to forced
sexual intercourse or other form of sexual violence. A global school based students health
survey found that 20 percent and 65 percent of school going children reported having been
verbally and physically bullied. In 2007, the ministry of women and child development
(MWCD), released a study which stated that children between the ages of 5-12 are the
highest risk for abuse and exploitation.
In India there is a need to stop increasing sexual harassment. Government must play its role
to eradicate this crime from our society and try to build a strong nation. There is a need to
change mentalities of people. One must know what to do when faced with a situation where
sexual harassment and abuse is in play. The first step to take is to say No clearly to the
harasser and to have the courage to express ones opinion directly. If saying no has no
impact, the next step should be to report to the authorities in the form of a written or verbal
complaint. The final step, in grave situations, is to take the help of government agencies.
Provisions need to be made that ensure that there are no loopholes in the system and anyone
who is faced with these situations can seek and get the appropriate help when needed.

I was asked about scary animals but after citing incidents, I dont feel any animal can be as
fierce as humans. Humanity doesnt sound humane anymore. It is high time that we realize as
moralities and enforce the motto of LIVE AND LET LIVE.
