Role of Political Parties-Town trap is not for

rat alone ooooh!

Last week, I asked some political questions about our country, Liberia. So far, it was only Mr. Habakkuk
Gaye who responded. He made some significant and interesting points. But, what I wanted to learn from
you folks out there is whether Liberia has organized and stable political parties. Generally, in a
democratic society like ours, well-organized political parties serve four vital functions.

Hand-pick or elect candidates from within the party through primary election
Mobilize and encourage voters to be vigilant in their effort to have confidence in the party.
The party facilitates governance for a better future.
And it monitors the opposing ruling party (s). That means parties serve as grave ombudsman

Unlike the above dynamic functions of political parties, the so-called political parties in Liberia
operations are as followed:

An individual forms his political party, and he or she is the sole proprietor of the party. That
means he or she is a kind of unchallenged candidate within the party. When he or she is
opposed, will leave the party and form a new one. And that ends the life of that party. Wow!
Founder of a political party in Liberia is pretty much the individual decision maker. No one else.
More frustratingly, a founder and sole proprietor of a political party in Liberia are significantly
indecisive by choosing to be first or second in command. Sometimes, they go as presidential or
vice presidential candidates. Poor decision makers. They will destroy our country soon when
elected.
The funniest of all is, after the election, all the multiple political parties go in their shells. We will
never hear about them anymore until another election year. During another election year, they
give rebirth with the same old name or give birth with a new brand name.
The simplicity and ignorance exercise by both unschooled and educators are their constant
support of one individual as their lifetime candidate and their blindness and deafness to
demonstrate democracy by conducting party primary election to elect a potential candidate.
What many of those political partys founders and supporters forget to apprehend is that their
candidate, whom, when elected could be the president of Liberia and not only their party or
ethnic group president.

Fellow Liberians, according to UNICEF, 65% of our population is illiterate. And this portion of our
population dominants in electing our leaders because, they are uninformed about so many things
concerning people who declare themselves presidential, senatorial, and representative candidates.
Lamentably, the educators are the instigators, promotors, and responsible for the kind of unscrupulous
leaders we have had and continue to produce.

Lets understand that elections provide voters with significant choices. It could be a local or the entire
nation race. But remember that it will affect our community or the entire country that could change the
direction of our country.

I wonder how both the educators and the illiterates people go about comparing and judging
candidates?
How many materials do we really gather about candidates before making a finally
decision to support or not to support them?
How do we evaluate our candidates stands on issues that are affecting our nation?
Are we supporting him because hes a member of our ethnic group? Fiasco!
Have we learned how other people view our candidates or we just dont care?

Now, fellow Liberians, lets forget about President Sirleafs administration and concentrate on
those who are fighting to take her place about their qualities, leadership abilities, hidden
agendas, ethnocentrism, egotism, and their personal enrichment schemes.

Frankly, with all our outcry about corruption in President Sirleafs administration, we will soon
miss her for so many excellent things she has done that we fail each day to voice them out.
Lets focus on these candidates. Let our campaign be a mature type and not ridicule and
politically cartoon post other candidates. Remember the oldie parable: Town trap is not for rat
alone!
