F4A/F5A Transaxles
T he F4A51 was first intro-
duced in the 1997 Mitsubishi
Diamanti; today it appears in
many Kia and Hyundai models. Its
also grown into a 5-speed with the addi-
tion of an underdrive section, and has
transformed into a rear wheel drive unit
for several truck and SUV applications.
No doubt its going to be with us for a
long time.
There isnt a lot of information
available on these units. Maybe thats
because its so similar to the 41TE, and
its very simple to work on. After you
rebuild one of these units, you could
probably do the next hundred with your
eyes closed. Very often, the only rea-
son for a rebuild is because the 2C or
L/R wave spring broke, destroying the
pump, or the rear cover and sealing ring
area wears out.
Unfortunately, a quality rebuild or
repair doesnt always result in these
units working properly. Remember, On most 4-speed

Shift Solenoids
The next interesting feature con-
cerns the shift solenoids. Each solenoid
modulates an individual clutch pack on
and off, just like a 41TE. Other than
that, there are some big differences:
Unlike a 41TE, all the shift
solenoids are identical.

When cleaning the solenoids,
only blow air into the hole closest to
the solenoid body or the middle hole.
Never blow air into the farthest hole:
Youll end up trapping any dirt or con-
taminants inside the solenoid.
The most important point to remem-
ber about these solenoids is theyre nor-
mally open; that is, theyre open when
turned off and closed when energized.
Which means that, when one of these
solenoids is commanded off, its allow-
ing oil to flow to the clutch; when its
commanded on (energized), it shuts off
the flow of oil. Heres why this is an
important point to keep in mind:
Suppose a unit is having a slow
or delayed forward engagement when
cold. After it runs for a few minutes, Figure 3
Underdrive Operation
Another unusual characteristic to
keep in mind when youre trouble-
shooting a 5-speed transaxle: There
are two different shift strategies in use.
Some units only hold the underdrive
on through 3rd gear; others keep it on
through 4th, and only release the under- Figure 4

In some cases it is the seal that has

I n the last installment of Keep
Those Trannys Rolling, we looked
at a 1999 Ford Explorer with a
chatter or shudder sensation on accel-

automatic four-wheel drive system, we
found codes P1837 (rear driveshaft
speed sensor), B1322 and B1574 (door

A faulty rear driveshaft speed sen-
sor was causing the automatic four-

tently, causing a chatter or shudder
sensation on acceleration while turning.
Replacing the rear driveshaft speed sen-
sor seemed to eliminate the problem.
But before we were ready to deliver the
vehicle, we had to recheck the GEM
system to see if code P1837 returned.

the owners of Ability Transmissions.
Figure 2: Frank Harrison, Jr. Its not so unusual these days for a

another relationship, such as brother

and John is that Ability is their only
relationship with one another.
We knew each other when we
were kids, explains Sue. When I grew
up, I became a dental technician, and
was working at a local dentists office.
One day John came in for an exam. We
recognized each other right away, and
spent some time catching up.
John mentioned that he was con-

a highly-respected transmission techni-

the more I thought it might be some-
thing we should do together.
Ability had been in business since
