ANNUAL SALARY: 19,920 Saudi Riyal

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Dr. Riyadh Al Ariyan, Head of Surgery
Department
NO.OF WORKING HOURS/WEEK: 48 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY: An operating room nurse is a healthcare worker who assist the
surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks, provides direct quality care to the
patient using the assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with other scrub, circulating and recovery nurses, surgeons and
anesthetist as a team for the welfare of the patient.

Preoperative care
Identify patient by asking the name comparing it to his/her personal
data file
 Check surgical consent if it was signed by patient and/or patients
relatives
Assess if patient is prepared physically, like if theres a surgical
marking on the surgical site, removed jewelries and has receive
antibiotics or other medication.

Intraoperative nursing care of scrub and circulating nurse

Anticipate the needs of the surgeon in giving surgical instruments that
is needed in the procedure.
Place taken out specimen like for example cyst or taken out lipoma
from the body parts of the patient in kidney basin.
Do instruments, needle, sponge count with the circulating nurse
before closure of the peritoneum to avoid leaving instrument or
sponges inside the body of the patient
Assist the anesthesiologists during the induction of anesthesia.
o Prepare medication to be used,things that are needed such as
endotracheal tube and laryngoscope
Record to the patient chart the time of anesthesia induction, start of
the operation, and end time.
Anticipate the needs of the scrub nurse and surgeon as well by giving
the additional supplies they need.

Postoperative care
Observe closely the patient and putting side rails in the bed to avoid
fall
Monitor patient every 10 minutes and record vital signs of patient such
as temperature using thermometer, blood pressure using blood
pressure apparatus, respiratory rate by counting the breathing of
patient per minute, pulse rate and oxygen saturation using pulse
oximeter, to the patient chart.
Administer oxygen therapy by putting face mask or nasal cannula to
help patient breathing
Suctions secretions by suctioning through the mouth or nose with the
use of the suction machine such as saliva to clear the airway if
needed.
Give medications such as pain killers and intravenous fluid to patient
with Anesthesiologist and Surgeons order.
Administer medication through oral, intravenous, intramuscular
or subcutaneous routes.
o Attend to the needs of patients like comforting the patients when
awake to alleviate the anxiety of the patient.
o Teach post-operative patients breathing exercises to alleviate the pain
aside the pain medication. Let the doctor explain the procedure done if
the patient is fully wake and teach how to take care of the post-
operative site to avoid infection example proper surgical dressing on
the site.

o Handle the following medical equipment when necessary: Operating

microscope to be used in a surgical setting, typically to perform
 microsurgery: significant use in ENT (ears, nose and throat
surgery, ophthalmic surgery, and neurosurgery.
o Diathermy machine for muscle relaxation, and as a method of heating
tissue electromagnetically or ultrasonically for therapeutic purposes in
medicine therapy and to deliver moderate heat directly to pathologic
lesions in the deeper tissues of the body.
o Suction devices for removing liquids or gases by suction it from the
patient. And use it to remove mucus, serum or blood from a body
cavity and remove fluids or mucus from airways. The potential of this
machine could be in need also when you have a moist cough, and
youre unable to effectively clear secretions from the throat, or are
having difficulty breathing.
o Liposuction machine to remove fat from the body in an attempt to
change its shape usually in abdominal area, thigh and arms.

o Pneumatic compression device to improve venous circulation in the

lower limbs of patients that include an air pump and inflatable
auxiliary sleeves, gloves or boots in a system.

o Vital signs monitor machine to monitor vital signs such as blood

pressure, pulse rate, oxygen saturation and respiratory rate of the
patient.
o Infusion pump to deliver fluids, such as nutrients and medications,
into a patient's body in controlled amounts.
