Question 1 ‘Write about your inquiry. What made you interested in this question? Briefly, tell the story of your own experience with your chosen topic. (If you did the pre-writing before the research proposal, you may have most of this written already.) Your Answer: Police brutality has always been a major problem. There is a variety of mixed ‘emotions on the topic that leave many individuals divided because of their different viewpoints. These emotions continue to build up and eventually lead to violence. This is particularly found between minorities and law enforcement. it many cases it seems that minorities are the main target of officers. There have been many cases that have led to the taking of their life over simple incidents that could have had a different outcome. in my case, I have seen how this has effected both sides of the spectrum. When an incident occurs, the black community at my school becomes one. We remain together and support each other despite our differences. We speak on the topic, we protest, we make sure our voices our heard through the commotion. On the other hand, my dad has been an officer in Durham County \ce | was in elementary school. He has never used his gun on ‘anyone and works in one of the roughest parts of the county. After the shootings and incidents thet recently occurred, my dad told me he had mixed emotions of still being an officer. He told me he only wanted to make a difference in the world, but felt he could no longer do so because of the opinions and attitudes individuals have towards him. | wanted to do this inquiry to dig deeper on what causes the violence between mainly minori end law enforcement and ways to bring them together in times when we need each other the most. Questi ‘Why is your question important? Who else would want to knaw about what you are inquiring into? How many people are affected by your topic? Why should anyone care about this? Your Answer: My question is important because it speoks on the division found in our nation today. The problem of police brutality has been around for years starting in the ghettos of rough neighborhoods and escalating onward. | thinka large some of individuals would want to know about my inquiry. After doing my research, | learned that white individuals have the same risk of dealing with the problem of police brutality es black individuals. There cases, however, go unknown to the. world at times. This is because although there are more white individuals in the world than black, blacks are still being killed at the same rete. It is affecting both races meaning we should all come together to gain greater ton the problem ‘and work towards making changes. People are affected by inquiry by leaming how serious the problem is. It has been around for years and needs to change. We will never be one if we continue to allow race barriers to come in between us. If an Individual does not care about this topic then they were taught at @ young age how to hate. How could one sit around and be okay with the amount of violence and death going on around them? This problem needs to be fixed for future generations and change the attitudes towards officers. They are not all bad, and are bound to meke mistakes as we ell do. It up to both sides, however, to work together to ensure these mistakes do not continue to occur. Question 3 In your search, who has made a significant contribution to the conversation on this topic? What have they said, and how does that relate to your inquiry question? What important questions do these other voices raise for you? Your Answer: An article by The Washington Post made e significant contribution to the conversation of my topic. It spoke on how not only black individuals face police brutality, but also white. It gave me facts on how there are far more white people in the world than black, but they are extremely close in number on the amount of cases where they are killed each year. Most of the time when a white individual is killed their case has gone unknown to society. When a black individual is brutality killed, however, it is widely known. Police brutality is occurring on both sides, but is perticularly high when it comes to minority males. This relates to my inquiry because I proposed the question on how race was a factor. How is it that there is. ‘a major population difference between these two races, but they are still being killed at the same rate by law enforcement? Question 4 ‘What was the mest pervasive and convincing answer to your inquiry question? In the ‘end, whose voice was the most convincing? What might you add to the conversation? What do you want to say? Your Answer: The most persuasive answer to my inquiry project came from the book Race and Police Brutality by Malcolm D. Holmes and Brad D. Smith. it states that a minorities eyes, police symbolize an oppressive society. The use of force by an office! almost always legally justified in the court room, especially in a case involving minority citizens. This has caused minorities to refrain from having confidence in law enforcement to protect them in any situation. This distrust, leads to violence on both sides that could have all been prevented. We are all humans who meke mistakes and fear what is to come. | am not justifying that the actions by law enforcement are okay, but instead saying that if we know we are. both scared then we need to come together and be fearless as one. Question 5 ‘What have you come to understand about the topic that you didn't fully appreciate when you began your inquiry? What difference will the discoveries you made about your question make in your life? In the lives of others (potential audience)? Your Answer: Although I knew it before, | have had the ability to further understand the ‘emotions coming from both sides after my inquiry. We are all humans who depend on one another for survival. It is a cold, cruel world because of the amount of violence that takes place, but this can all change beginning with changing the wrongful attitudes of people who have made it this way. We are all scared to have our life, our friend's life, or our family members’ life taken away from us et any moment. The discoveries I have made will make not only others, but also myself, wonder if we are really woke on the situation. it will make us wonder if we are really working to make a difference on these problems that ‘occur every day and take the lives of those around us. Even if one does not have a connection with someone who has been a victim of police brutality, they can still make a difference by allowing their voice to be heard and coming together as one. Question 6 ‘What do you remain curious about? What questions remain unresolved? What directions would more inquiry take if you were to continue? What new questions were raised by this inquiry? Your Answer: | remain curious on how this problem has gone on for so long. Individuals still lack knowledge of the situation and speek on things they have never researched. People will follow the idea that a black individual is more likely to be killed indi 1g relationships, trust, and more importantly people. If! were to continue my inquiry | think | would go back in history and find out more information on where it all started because history because they are violent and participate in illegal activities. Do wl luals not do these things as well? Racial stereotyping is ki continues to repeat itself. New questions arise on how law enforcement is trained and what causes them to pull the trigger. One main question is why not aim to shoot at the legs instead of an area that will lead to one’s death? Citizens of minority status are killed for misdemeanors and walking at night with @ bag of skittles and an Arizona tea. Why ere they the main target when far more severe things are going on in our world?
