YMCA OF GREATER GRAND RAPIDS

With the West Michigan Whitecaps, Fifth Third Bank, and Meijer

OVERVIEW
In 2016, the YMCA Inner-City Youth Baseball/Softball program provided 1,311
vulnerable youth from Grand Rapids with a high-quality summer learning
experience that provided a safe, structured environment for children of all skill
levels to play, grow, and learn about Americas favorite pastime. At the Y, we
believe that income should never be a barrier for children. This philosophy along
with the generous gifts from Fifth Third Bank, West Michigan Whitecaps, Meijer,
Eikenhout and our community allows us to provide the Inner-City Youth
Baseball/Softball program free of charge, including a jersey, pants, hat, and glove
to each child that cant afford their own. Children are taught the basics of baseball
or softball, including the rules, skills, and fundamentals of the game. The focus of
this program is on team building and skill development. Practices and games are
held in community parks throughout the Grand Rapids area, including: Martin
Luther King Jr. Park, Plaster Creek Park, Ted Rasberry Field, Aberdeen Park,
Richmond Park, Riverside Park, and Sibley Elementary Field. A majority of the
participants are from a vulnerable neighborhood located in the heart of Grand

and 18 staff donated For our kids, the YMCA Inner-City Baseball/Softball program is about so much
more than the sport. They not only learned the fundamentals of the game, but also
1,758 hours to developed team-building skills and increased their self-esteem and confidence
assets that will help them on the field and more importantly, in life. Together, we
teach 1,311 youth gave access and opportunity that our youth otherwise would not have had.

ANNUAL EQUIPMENT DRIVE
The 2016 Give-a-Glove Campaign followed the 2015 initiative to include all types of
baseball equipment. We received over 172 gloves, 32 bats, 13 pairs of shoes, 14
helmets, 3 sets of catchers equipment, and several balls. This format gave
vulnerable families the equipment they needed to truly participate in the program.
Because of the generosity of our community members, every child in our program
was properly equipped for a great season.

4th ANNUAL BASEBALL BASH

th
The 4 Annual Inner-City Baseball/Softball Bash took place at Garfield Park on
th
Friday, June 17 from 6:00-8:00pm. An estimated 400 players, family members,
and community members were impacted at this free event that provided bounce
house inflatables, radar speed pitch, face-painting, carnival games, water balloons,
and more. Food and drinks were also provided. The Whitecaps very own mascots,

GOALS, OBJECTIVES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids continuously works to enhance the Inner-City
Youth Baseball/Softball program. The following objectives for our 2016 season were
met:

Objective #1: Increase playability of baseball/softball fields

The Y was a 2015 recipient of a $54,560 grant through the Baseball Tomorrow
Foundation. The funds were used to provide an extensive renovation of Ted
Rasberry Field which was utilized during the 2016 season. Jessica Muzevuca was

able to secure a group of volunteers from Nutech to add the finishing touch to Ted
Rasberry field. The YMCA team was able to add and complete minor renovations
to Sibley Elementary Field, and renovate Richmond Park (photos below).

Objective #2: Increase community
involvement
Before programming began this summer,
we held a pre-season clinic for 150+ youth
in our program. Players were split into 10
groups and participated in 10 baseball drill
stations. Volunteer coaches and program
staff led drills on batting, catching, fielding,

and base running. We also experienced

helped increase player participation
and attendance.

Objective #3: Increase player attendance and participation

Several key strategic moves in 2016 helped improve player participation and
attendance. Continuing to provide each player with an MLB replica jersey, pants,
rd
and Whitecaps hat, as well as an opportunity to play at 5/3 Ballpark and attend a
game were three of those strategies. Securing 23 coaches prior to the first player
signup, allowing us to increase the overall quality of our coaching staff was the
fourth. Lastly, our increased collaboration with GRPS allowed us to bring
awareness of the opportunity to participate to several kids we were previously
unable to reach. These strategies helped create an increase in league quality and
awareness, ultimately leading to higher participation and attendance. Of the 681
registrations, 564 (83%) made it through the first four weeks of practice and
received a uniform.

Objective #4: Provide post-practice/game meals for players

In 2016, The David D. Hunting YMCA Kitchen joined the Inner-City Youth
Baseball/Softball mission and was able to provide post practice and game sack
dinners for roughly 600 players twice per week. In total, we served just under
10,000 total meals over the course of the season!

Marketing Updates- GRPS

An instrumental collaboration with GRPS, who came along as an unnamed partner,
was crucial to getting the season off on the right foot. With the full support of
GRPS leadership, the YMCA united with the GRPS marketing department to better
reach the target audience of inner city kids we were seeking. The athletic
department also assisted by recruiting students, using GRPS baseball and softball
coaches, to send out phone calls to potential participants. Staff and volunteers
from the YMCA were also allowed to attend track and field days at local GRPS
elementary schools, along with 10 school visits on half days, and end of the year

assemblies. While making these school visits, YMCA staff engaged students in
games of wiffleball to peak their interest for the league.

Other marketing efforts to increase the awareness of the Inner-City Youth Baseball
and Softball league included:
1. A visit to a Spanish radio station 93.9FM, where one YMCA employee
shared the details of the league to the Spanish speaking audience.
2. Setting up an informative table at the Rock the Block community event
to hand out flyers and sign-up sheets.

Ted Rasberry Field - Shed Project

A special thanks to Mike Chase and the great crew of carpenters he organized to
construct the much needed storage shed at Rasberry Field.

Personal Stories from the

players
Pedro Gomez is on the 1-3 Coed orange team from Plaster Creek. He will be
entering the Young 5s this upcoming school year. Playing with the older kids has
been a blast for young Pedro, especially because his Dad is the coach. This is
Pedros first time playing baseball, but you wouldnt know that if you saw him play.
Pedro runs, hits, and throws with the best of them. His favorite part about baseball
is catching the baseballs that are hit to him just like the Detroit Tigers do. The
Tigers are his favorite team to watch on TV. Besides playing baseball in the
summer, Pedros favorite summertime activity is swimming. When the school year
rolls around, Pedros favorite thing to do is play with toys in the classroom. His

favorite food is the Lunchables Cracker Stacks. However, Pedro emphasized that he
will only eat the turkey ones, and not the ham. Pedro enjoyed playing with the
ICYBS program and cant wait to participate again next year!

The Jones family has three boys in the ICYBS program. The youngest, Kingston, is
nd
on the 1-3 grade coed team at Rasberry field. Kingston will be entering 2 grade at
CA Frost this upcoming school year. Kingstons
favorite subject in school is math. He is a big
Detroit Tigers Fan and loves Miguel Cabrera.
Kingstons favorite food is watermelon. Kingston
excels on the field. He can throw, run, hit, and field
very well for his age.

Kingstons brother, Jaheim, is the middle brother in the Jones family. Jaheim has an
outgoing personality, and has a smile that can light up a room. Jaheim is a 9 year
old who attends CA Frost as well. Jaheim plays on the 4-5 grade boys team at
Rasberry Field. This year was Jaheims third year playing with the ICYBS program.
He has many interests including Legos, bowling, videogames, and spending time
with his brothers. In the summertime, he likes to go to the beach as well as to
amusement parks. His favorite baseball team is the Detroit Tigers. Jaheim has been
playing baseball for 4 years now, and you can tell he has had prior experience.
Jaheim is a competitor on the field. He wants to do his very best. Jaheim has a
great sense of humor, but when he steps between the chalked lines, its all
business to him.
th
The oldest of the brothers, Kamani, is going into 6 grade
at CA Frost. Kamani has a strong passion for baseball. His
favorite teams are the Tigers, Rockies, and Giants. His
favorite baseball player is David Big Papi Ortiz. Kamani
lives for baseball, and he plays it in the Spring, Summer,
and Fall. All that hard work earned Kamani a roster spot at
the 2016 ICYBS All-Star Game at Fifth Third Ball Park. Just
like his younger brother Jaheim, Kamani strives to do his
very best. He is his biggest critic, but knows how to
channel his emotions which is very impressive at his young
age. The Jones brothers plan to be a part of the ICYBS
program in the future, and the Y is proud to have these
three young men as a part of their program.

th
Madison Cummings will be an 8 grader at CA Frost this upcoming
th th
school year. She plays on the 4 -8 grade girls softball team at Rasberry
Field. Her favorite team is the Detroit Tigers. Madisons favorite food is
a Quarter Pounder with cheese from McDonalds. Her favorite position

pitching ability helped her earn a spot on the 2016 ICYBS All-Star Game

girls roster! If she had to tell a friend about playing softball at the Y she would say
that The ICYBS program teaches young kids the rules and skills of baseball/softball
and you get to experience real situations just like the Tigers do on TV. The YMCA
is proud to have her in the ICYBS program this year.

Kye Johnson is a 10 year old who loves playing baseball. This is his second year
playing, and he continues to enjoy baseball. Kyes favorite baseball team is the
Detroit Tigers. His favorite player on the Tigers is Miguel Miggy Cabrera. Unlike
Miggy, Kye prefers to be the pitcher while playing for his 4-5 grade team. His
favorite food is pepperoni pizza and he enjoys watching TV, playing videogames,
and staying active. Kyes coach said he was a blessing on the team as he always
encouraged his teammates and never gave up when things didnt go his way. The
YMCA would like to thank Kye for being a part of the ICYBS program this year.
