Names: Bridge Testing

Sheet

Youve just spent the last few weeks carefully and meticulously
building your bridges. So what are we going to do now? Break
them, of course! But since this is a science class, its not going
to be quite as simple as that. Heres what you are going to have
to do...

1. Find the mass of your bridge. Before your turn to test your bridge, use the scales provided and record the mass of your
bridge.

BRIDGE MASS = 20.5g = .0205kg

2. We will then attach the testing block and bucket. As the weight is added to your bridge, the stress will cause your bridge to
bend or deflect in places. We are interested to see if your bridge bends or twists very much in the testing process. You will
be asked to recall this information in your final summary. In the space below, describe how your bridge bent or
reacted under the added weight:

The right side detached and the whole top arch flew off like a 4 year old on a trampoline.

Length - 31 cm
Width - 5 cm
Height - 11cm

3. We will continue to add weight until your bridge breaks. Record the breaking weight and mass. The mass is also referred
to as the critical load.

BREAKING WEIGHT = 23pounds BREAKING MASS (critical load) = 10.45kg

4. Now find the engineering efficiency of your bridge by dividing the critical load by the mass of your bridge to find your
strength to weight ratio. (Be sure to be careful with the units.) SHOW YOUR WORK IN THE SPACE PROVIDED:

ENGINEERING EFFICIENCY = 10.45 / .0205 = 509.8

5. Once the competition is complete, fill in your placements and CLASS results:

Best Efficiency in your class = 22.16 by Katelyn Bender

Highest Critical Load = 63.8LBS by Ryan and Nick

Lightest Bridge = 9.7g by Lindsey and Harley

Your Class Placement: 7 Your Overall Placement: 943 Out Of 1650
