1.0 Introduction and General Information
Differing from the main pile hacking method which was originally proposed, the alternative
method is being proposed as an acceleratory measure in the pile hacking process. All steps will
be taken by the contractor to ensure the integrity of the piles to remain intact without any
damages during this process. This proposed method would be followed for any selected pile
deemed required by contractor.

2.0 Scope of Work

1. Identifying pile grinding height

2. Inspection for identification of protruding rebar locations (if any) prior to grinding
3. Joint inspection by consultant and contractor engineer
4. Safety arrangements and precautions in area
5. Grinding method
6. Toppling method
7. Joint inspection of levels and completed piles
8. Proper disposal of concrete debris
9. Incorporated equipment

5.0 Method and Procedure

Setting Out
Setting out will be carried out using the working drawings.
Pile grinding level will be set at 1m heights from pile cut off levels.
The pile hacking level shall be same as the pile cutoff level.

Page | 3
Correct cutting line would be marked using a levelling set which will be confirmed by
QC officers.
The Levels will be checked and approved for cutting by QC officers (also by consultant if
required) prior to cutting.
Pile hacking process will commence as dictated through previous pile hacking method
statement, after the grinding and toppling process is completed
The final drawing to be submitted to Employers PM for recording purpose and formal
approval.

Pile Grinding (cutting)

After the level of cutting has been marked and approved, to maintain the level of the cut,
the grinder will be fixed to a cable of fixed length which is mounted to a metal pole
which is fixed to the top of the pile itself. The 150mm cutting blade will mark a cut in the
pile as follows,

Figure 5.1 Cutting reach of the grinder

After the cut is completed, two opposite sides of the pile will be grinded to gain a wedge
shape as shown below,

Wedge

Figure 5.2 Grinder limits and wedges at opposite sides to aid toppling

The wedges at opposite ends will aid in the toppling process with the excavator acting as
the points of connection between the pile and the excavator as well as aiding in the
toppling moment.

Safety

All the site staff and worker should wear safety helmets and shoes
Workers must wear eye goggles, ear protectors and hand gloves where necessary
All the dangerous areas must be barricaded
All the electrical wires and sockets such a way that must be covered to safety regulations
All the site staff and workers must be alert when working near machinery
Excavated area shall be illuminated during the night time

6.0 Safety Management and Control

All required safety precautions shall be taken accordingly and will be followed in compliance
with the project safety plan. All possible accidents will be avoided including injury to workers

and damage to property etc. Since the toppling section of the pile is considerably large,
additional precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of the workers as well as the
surroundings.

7.0 Environment Management and Control

Throughout the controlled cutting process, adequate dust control procedures will be followed, by
incorporating water (at pile cutting location) or with the aid of other accepted approved dust
control materials. Other machines and equipment which are not directly involved in the grinding
process which are in the immediate vicinity and which does not provide assistance, will be
temporarily enclosed or will be protected using other means against dust.

8.0 Annexes
Key machinery to be used for the alternate pile hacking method are as follows,
