NURSING PHILOSOPHY

Nursing provides me with the opportunity to look after others in ways that they cannot. It

gives me the opportunity to be an advocate and act under my scope to provide effective and

efficient care. These opportunities are valuable to me because I am able to give back to my

community in ways that not many can, such as attending their physiological and emotional

needs. As a nurse, I will not only be able to be the eyes and ears of doctors, but I will have the

opportunity to be first in line with the patients, and get to know them holistically.

My philosophy for nursing is based on five principles: collaboration, professionalism,

evidence-based care, and compassion. Patient care should be holistic, and a nurse can only do

this through collaboration with interdisciplinary team members to view all aspects of patient

care. Only through this can the patient benefit and receive complete care. A nurse should also

show professionalism inside and outside the healthcare setting, and be an example not only for

other nurses, but also to the rest of his/her community.

As a nurse, we should not only know about the innovations that occur within the nursing

field, but also take part in the innovation process. Through this, the nurse is able to learn and stay

up to date with evidence regarding patient care, and thus provide evidence-based care. Finally,

the nurse should also remember that we are here to care for individuals/ communities, and we

have to remember that we are not only caring to improve patient outcomes, we are caring for a

human being that is in need of a compassion advocate that can be trusted.

These principles are ones that I will apply into my practice, as I want to apply what I

have learned in nursing school, but also maintain my own values and beliefs as to what nursing is

and should be.
