AreaMakersFaire.Landauisa25ftlongmetaldragonbuiltatopa1985HondaSabreframe.
TheexhibithaswowedmanycrowdsatnumerousBurningMansandtheMakerFaire
technologyfestivals.Theexhibithasrecentlyexpandedtoincludepyrotechnics,handson
physicsdisplays,andinformationontheSTEMCoalition.

TechnicalDescription

Landauthedragonwasbornofartandscienceandtravelsthelandtoaweandinspiretechnology
enthusiastsofallages.ThistechnicaldiagramdescribesthemajorcomponentsoftheLandau
theDragonexhibitandincludessize,components,andsafetyfeaturesorconcernsasrequiredby
mostexhibitapplications.

OriginalVehicle
Thedragonsbodywasbuiltoffthebaseofa1985Honda
Sabre.Motorcycleenthusiastslovethisfactbecausethethe
85Sabreisknownforbeingapowerhouseofabike.

ModifiedCreation
Theoriginalbikewasstrippedofallnonfunctionalpartsincludingthelights,mirrors,and
decorativefairning.Anentirenewframewassculptedfromaluminumandsteel.Thehead,neck,
body,trailer,andtailwereallcreatedtoenhancethevisualdesign.Theimagebelowshowsthe
aftermarketupgradesmadetotheoriginalbike:

TechnicalDescription

Design:
Thedesigncomponentsdiscussedinthisdocumentincludethehead,neck,mainbody,trailer,
tail,andwings.Themetalcomponentswereindividuallyhandcraftedandweldedfromsteeland
aluminum.Themajorcomponentsaretransportedandassembledonsitebeforeeachexhibition.

Head
Theheadis3ftlongandwassculptedfromanaluminumplate.
Themetalwascut,bent,andthenshapedtocreatethehead.The
noseisalightingcomponentfromoldDodgetruck.Theglowing
eyesareUSBpoweredplasmaorbspurchasedatFrys.Theheadis
boltedtotheneckwith(3)6inchheavydutybolts,toensurethe
headremainssecureduringexhibition.

Neck
Theneckconsistsoftwoweldedtrellissectionsjoinedwitha
hinge.Thelowerportionofthenecksfrontstayiscontrolledbya
pneumaticallyswitchedaircylinder,assistedbyafixedairspring
(
thesamecomponentthatisresponsibleforopeningyourcar
trunk).
Theswitchishardwiredintothedriverconsoleandliftsthe
hingedsectionsoftheneck10feetintheairallowingthe
pyrotechnicstobeusedsafelyaroundcrowds.
Smallarmor
plating/scales,sculptedfromsmallsheetsof.08thickaluminum
plate,werewiredwithLEDlightingandindividuallyinstalledup
theneck.Acustombuiltfrontfairingstayservesasmounting
pointforneckhingeandpneumaticcomponents.

MainBody
ThemainbodyisaHondaSabreframestrippedofnonfunctional
partsincludingthefairing,mirrors,turnsignals,andlights.Afterit
wasstripped,armorplating/scales,sculptedfromlargesheetsof
.08thickaluminumplate,werewiredwithLEDlightingand
individuallyinstalledacrossthebody.
Trainingwheelswere
mountedtotherearoftheframetostabilizethebike.Thetraining
wheelformationofthestabilizationwheelspreventsatipover,
evenwhenstopped,toallowsafeoperationatverylowspeeds.
TheMainbodyhousesatrailerhitchtoconnectthetrailersection.

Trailer
Thetrailerisanaestheticextensionofthetorsosectionofthe
dragonandcancarryupto(6)passengers.Itismadefromasteel
benchandastandardautomotiveballhitchandreceivercouples
thetrailertothevehicle.Largearmorscalesdecoratethesideof
thevehicletohidethepivotpoint.Passengersafetyisenhanced
withafoamseatpadandfoamcoveringsoverpinchpoints.The
trailerissecuredtoaballitchlocatedonthebackofthemain
body.

Tail
Thesteeltailisacustomweldedtrellisframemountedtotheback
endofthetrailer.Thecurvedundulatingshapeisprotectedbythe
individualmetalscalessculptedfromlargesheetsof.08thick
aluminumplate.Thehandcraftedscalesweremountedatopthe
trellisframe.Thetailsspineisattachedintoasocketontheendof
thetrailer.Thesocketisthensecuredbyaclampholdingitin
place.

Wings
Thewingsaremadefromhandsculptedsteeltubingandwerebuilt
usingacustomformedjigandCclamp.Aluminetissewnintothe
wingtogiveittextureandawebbingappearance.Thewingswere
TIGweldedandmountedtoacustomhinge.Thehingeisacustom
machinedteflonbushingthatallowsthewingstofreelyflapupand
downwhensecuredby2heavydutybolts.

Setup/Takedown:
Landauisaselfcontainedexhibit.Landausmakerteamiscapableoftransportingtheexhibit
fromstoragetotheexhibitlocationandrequirestruckandtraileraccessfordeliver/setup.The
exhibitrequiresa30x15x15lotfordisplay.Themakercrewneedsapproximately2hourstoset
uptheexhibit.Theexhibitisselfcontainedandrunsonageneratorrequiringnoelectricityor
technicalsupport.Themakercrewsupervisestheexhibitatalltimes.Takedownrequires
truck/traileraccessandiscompletedinaboutanhour.

BrettJacobs

Who
BrettJacobsisanativeofAustin,TXwithasuccessfulcareerasatechnologistintheheartof
SiliconValley. Hebuildseverythingfrommutantartcarsto semiconductoretchequipment.He
hasgiveninternationaltalksonhisdissertationLaserInducedFluorescence.Hefindspersonal
satisfactioninbuildingcomplexsystemsandworkingwithhishands.In2009Brettdebutedhis
firstlargescaleartwork,LandautheDragon,attheBurningManfestivalinNevada.Landauis
a25ftlongmetaldragonbuiltatopa1985HondaSabremotorcycleframe.Hewasinspiredto
createLandauafterviewingthegrandscaleartofBurningMan.

Early
Bretthasalwaysbeencreativeanddevelopedanearlyinterestinelectronicsandrobotics.He
beganexperimentingwithelectronicsattheageof6,underthesupervisionofhisfather,aPhD
mathematicianandfirmwareengineer.HewasbuildingmodelrocketsandRadioShack
electronickitsatage6.Byage7,hewassolderinginhisdad'sgarage.Hestartedprogramming
inBASICatage8.Atage9,hestartedprogramminginC.Byage10,hehadstartedhisfirst
businessventurebuildingandsellingcomputersoutoftheclassifiedads.HejoinedtheBoy
ScoutsofAmericain1992.Hespent8yearswiththeBoyScoutsearningtherankEagleScout.
Hedevelopedhisinterestinmetalworkasanundergrad,whenhetookamachinecourseto
improvehislaboratoryskills.

FirstProjects
OneofthefirstprojectsBrettremembersworkingonwasmakingavacuumcleanerhovercraft
ingradeschool.Heremembersautomatingamechanicaltoyroboticarminhighschoolschool.
Heriggedthearmtobecontrolledbyacustomelectronicinterfaceandcomputerprogramhe
created.Inhighschool,hebuiltasandvolleyballcourtforalocalschooltoserveashisEagle
Scoutcommunity serviceproject.IncollegehebuiltalargeReubenstubeandconnectedittoa
.mp3playertocreateamusicalpyrotechniceffect.Healsobuilta10tallelevatedairport

Currentlyworkingintheheartofsiliconvalley,Brettcombineshisprofessionaltrainingand
artisticpassiontocreatemetalmonstrosities.Heenjoyssharinghisartwithothersandusingitas
aplatformtogenerateenthusiasmfortheSTEM(Science,Technology,Engineering,Math)
communityandinspireyoungpeopletoMake!

WhenLandauisondisplay,Brettprovidesonsitephysicsdemonstrationstotheyoungandold.
Heshowsthemechanicsinvolvedinliftingthedragon'sheadandgivesahandsofhowthe
pneumaticpumpworkstoliftandlowerthehead.Hisdemoendswithanoffertoclimbatopthe
dragon'sbacktofliptheswitchtocontroltheliftandlowerofthedragon'sneck.

HisworkhasgottenattentionfromboththeMakerandBurningMancommunities.AtMaker
events,Brettprovideshandsonphysicsdemonstrationswithhisdragon.Heusesapneumatically
controlledpumptoliftandlowerhidragonhead.Heenjoyexplainingphysicstoyoungpeople
andencouragesthemtointeractwithhandsonactivitiesthatincludeapartstotouchandbuttons
topush.Thedemoculminateswithhisstudentclimbingupontothedragonandflippingthe
switchthatpneumaticallycontrolsthedragon'sneck.Iveseenthedemonstrationfirsthandand
itdelightspeopleofallagestotakecontrolofthemetalbeast.Theyfliptheswitchandthehead
lifts10feetintotheair.

Landauhasevolvedfrommobileartexhibit,tohandsonphysicsdemonstrations,toSTEM
ambassadorraisingawarenessandfundingfortheSTEMCoalition,anonprofitorganizationthat
worksaggressivelytoraiseawarenessinCongress,theAdministration,andotherorganizations
aboutthecriticalrolethatSTEMeducationplaysinenablingtheU.S.toremaintheeconomic
andtechnologicalleaderoftheglobalmarketplaceofthe21stcentury.MembersoftheSTEM
Coalitionbelievethatournationmustimprovethewayourstudentslearnscience,mathematics,
technologyandengineeringandthatthebusiness,education,andSTEMcommunitiesmustwork
togethertoachievethisgoal.

Future
PyrotechnicsareinBrett'sfutureashisnextprojectincludesaddingapropaneflameeffecttohis
